SUPPORT NEW YORK PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN

The Theatre’s Arts in Education programs provide semester-long residencies linked to a Theatre for a New Audience

Production.

Here is your chance to support Theatre for a New Audience’s work on stage and in New York City’s Public School classrooms. Your bid helps underwrite next season’s production of Christopher Marlowe’s Tamburlaine, featuring John Douglas Thompson in the title role and directed by Michael Boyd. The production will be seen by general audiences, including more than 1,000 students and teachers from over a dozen New York Public Schools. The Theatre’s arts in education programs have been shown to increase students’ literacy skills, motivation in the classroom and promote an interest in the arts. For many of the participating students, their visit to Polonsky Shakespeare Center represents their first experience with live theatre.

Your donation also sponsors over 200 5th and 6th grade students and teachers at P.S. 235/Lenox Academy, located in Flatbush and Canarsie, Brooklyn. P.S. 235 has enjoyed a partnership with Theatre for a New Audience and our arts in education programs for over 20 years. Thanks to the foundations and individuals who support our education programs, as well as your support this evening, there is no charge to the students to participate in these transformative programs.

Even if we can’t put you on the stage, we can offer you an important role: helping to underwrite a Theatre for a New Audience production and providing a memorable educational opportunity for students at P.S. 235/Lenox Academy.

Works on Paper by MILTON GLASER

Awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama in 2009, legendary graphic designer Milton Glaser is offering an extraordinary body of work that he has created for Theatre for a New Audience. Milton’s work for the Theatre, centered on varied interpretive portraits of Shakespeare, has forged a powerful graphic identity for our printed materials. In addition to gracing the Theatre’s brochures, posters, and materials for the Theatre’s Annual Gala, Milton designed the Scripps Award that will be presented this evening to F. Murray Abraham and the Life in Art Award presented to Drs. Leonard S. Polonsky and Georgette Bennett. Glaser created the iconic image, “I♥NY,” as well as campaigns for the School of Visual Arts, logos for Angels in America and the Children’s Television Workshop, and corporate identities for such diverse companies as Brooklyn Brewery, Grand Union, and the Rainbow Room. Milton has created the graphic and signage program for Theatre for a New Audience’s Polonsky Shakespeare Center.

Limited edition giclée prints:Every year, Milton creates a series of limited edition prints expressly for the Theatre’s Gala. This year, we are offering three 17” x 22” giclée prints. These numbered, autographed prints are being offered at a fixed price, which includes shipping and handling. Your print will be delivered to you within two (2) weeks of the Gala.

What is a giclée?The word “giclée” is derived from the French language word “le gicleur” meaning “nozzle,” or more specifically “gicler” meaning “to squirt, spurt, or spray.” It was coined in 1991 by Jack Duganne, a printmaker working in the field, to represent any inkjet-based digital print used as fine art. In the past few years, the word “giclée,” as a fine art term, has come to be associated with prints using fade-resistant “archival” inks (including solvent inks) and the inkjet printers that use them. The quality of the giclée print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.
