Dear Have Dreams Family and Friends:

Dreams can be realized. Who would have imagined that an organiza on founded two decades ago to provide safe, tailored programs for children with au sm would thrive and grow alongside the children we served, now ushering and guiding them in their adult years.

In two decades, as the incidence of au sm exploded, Have Dreams expanded its programming, staff and facili es to meet the ever-increasing demand for services. In 20 years much has changed, yet we have remained steadfast to the fundamental principles that have always guided us as an organiza on: understand the culture of au sm, respect the individual, and provide a safe, predictable environment to provide meaningful learning opportuni es so that each individual can reach their full poten al.

You have helped make all this possible. Have Dreams’ accomplishments over the years are a result of the strong, vibrant community made up of parents, families, par cipants, volunteers, donors and staff . We are grateful to everyone who has joined us on this remarkable journey, and we look forward to the next 20 years with you by our side.

Sincerely,

Kris na E. Johnsen, M.A. Execu ve Director

Charting Our Next 20 YearsA Message from the President

Dear Have Dreams Family and Friends,

For 20 years, Have Dreams has been a vital resource for the au sm community of Chicago. We have changed the lives of countless par cipants and their families through our innova ve and personally tailored programming and we have reached thousands more through our training of professionals in our communi es and beyond.

Now, we are looking ahead to the next 20 years and char ng our course for growth and sustainability. We are in the fi nal stages of a strategic plan that will help us leverage our strengths, and enable us to reach an ever-expanding number of children, teens and adults impacted by au sm.

We won’t change what makes Have Dreams special, but we will broaden, while also focusing on our programs and services: we will expand op ons for young adults and train even more professionals in best prac ce methods.

We can begin this next chapter thanks to the solid founda on that we and our many engaged and giving partners in the community have built at Have Dreams...and we are excited to share this journey with you.

Sincerely,

Steve GustafsonPresident, Board of Directors

Celebrating Our Year of DreamsThen and Now

In 1996, when Have Dreams held its fi rst Social Skills program, one day a week for seven elementary-aged children in a room above the Park Ridge Oakton Ice Arena, it was at the forefront of au sm interven on services. Today, Have Dreams is s ll leading the way with its Social, Communica on and Independent Life Skills (SCILS) programs, structured teaching trainings, and job training programs. A look at Then and Now gives a glimpse into the tremendous growth Have Dreams has gone through over the past 20 years.

NowThe prevalence of au sm is now 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys

Today, Have Dreams provides 28 programs and a total of 1,000 hours of direct services a week to over 150 children, teens and young adults from 23

Chicago-area suburbs. The variety of programs off ered has changed enormously; besides a er-school Social Skills programs, Have Dreams now off ers programs such as Teen Club, Tech Club, a Film/Mul media Summer Camp and Special Olympics.

Have Dreams moved two more mes before se ling at its current loca on in the Avenues to Independence Building in 2004. A loca on in Evanston was

added in 2010, broadening the communi es that Have Dreams is able to serve.

The Evanston loca on provides a large conference space for training educators in the structured teaching method and a fully stocked Walgreens training center

for young adults learning how to work in retail.

Have Dreams off ers four diff erent programs for young adults 18 and up, tailor-fi t to the needs of the par cipants: Life SCILS (Social, Communica on, and

Independent Living Skills); Career Launch: Your First Job, for students in high school; Project SEARCH Collaborates for Au sm at Northwestern University, a

one-year business-based transi on program for students in their last year of high school; and Have Dreams Academy, a semester program that combines training,

job coaching and internship opportuni es.

Because younger children are now diagnosed with au sm much earlier, Have Dreams introduced the Wee Dream program for children

ages 16 months to 5 years old.

Have Dreams now employs 35 full and part- me instructors, who lead par cipants in a variety of programs.

Our Night of Dreams Gala raised over $410,000 in 2014 and over $475,000 in 2015 thanks to our wonderful donors who believe in our mission at Have Dreams.

ThenThe prevalence of au sm was 1 in 2,500 children

Have Dreams began with one a er-school Social Skills class for seven elementary-aged children from Park Ridge.

Social Skills programs were held at the Oakton Ice Arena in Park Ridge and then at Jeff erson School.

In the beginning, there were no programs for teens and young adults. These programs would grow as the par cipants grew older and their needs changed; life skills such as cooking, cleaning and job training became necessary as the

popula on grew older.

There were no programs for preschool-aged children when Have Dreams began. At the me, children were not diagnosed as early as they are now.

Three teachers taught the fi rst Social Skills class in 1996.

The fi rst Dream Makers’ Benefi t on November 1, 1996, featured a silent auc on and special guest Bob Avellini, former Chicago Bears quarterback.

Celebrating Our Year of Dreams: Our FamiliesReflections from Peggy Gilger - Founding Have Dreams Board Member and Parent

“To accomplish great things, we must

not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”- Anatole France

Peggy Gilger has been with Have Dreams since the very beginning. Peggy’s son, Liam, was one of the original seven children to a end the fi rst Have Dreams a er-school program in 1996. “My son was in school with other students with au sm and some of the parents and his teacher felt that there were no social opportuni es outside of school,” recalls Peggy. His teacher at that me was Kris Johnsen, who would become Have Dreams’ Execu ve Director. “Kris helped us fi gure out the next steps needed to be er serve our children.” The biggest “next step” was launching Have Dreams and Peggy decided to become a board member. Twenty years later, and she never le .

In 1996 when Have Dreams began, there were ten board members. “We were very much a grass roots organiza on and we discussed fund-raising, but mostly we tried to determine what services were needed for children with au sm.” Today, Liam and the other original par cipants are in their twen es and there are now 17 board members. A lot has changed in 20 years, but the board con nues to focus on fi nding services that will best serve the needs of individuals with au sm, such as expand-ing life skills and job training programs for young adults.

“I love Have Dreams and I respect Kris Johnsen,” says Peggy. “Just when I think I may step down from the board, something pulls me back in. I feel so indebted to Have Dreams for helping to make Liam the amazing guy he is today. I enjoy seeing where Have Dreams is going; it’s been a great experience for me.”

Celebrating Our Year of Dreams: Our FamiliesAn Interview with one of our newer families from our Wee Dream Program

“My daughter was two when she was diagnosed with au sm,” said Laura Soto, mother of Sarai, age fi ve, “I learned about Have Dreams when I Googled ‘social groups for kids with ASD.’” Of the list of places that she searched, many were for children ages eight and up. At the me, Have Dreams had already established Wee Dream, a group-based early interven on and school readiness program for children ages 16 months through 5 years old. Sarai was one of the fi rst Wee Dream par cipants at the Have Dreams Evanston loca on.

As the incidence of au sm con nues to rise, children on the au sm spectrum are now being iden fi ed at a much younger age. Have Dreams started Wee Dream in response to this growing need. With a 1:1 teacher to student ra o, par cipants take part in table games, learning centers, art, music and circle ac vi es to learn social, communica on and school readiness skills, which research has shown can help ameliorate the eff ects of au sm. The program also off ers parent support.

Sarai loves to come to Wee Dream every week and she especially loves the music therapy. Laura said she’d recommend Have Dreams to other parents because, “it has helped my daughter to improve her language, how to work in groups and also how to share toys and other things.” Laura said the program also gives her the opportunity to have a li le break from her daily rou ne and relax or chat with other parents while they wait, which has resulted in new friendships - not just for her daughter - but for herself as well.

“The future belongs to those who believe

in the beauty of their dreams.”

- Eleanor Roosevelt
