A big congratulations to Chilliwack PriceSmart Foods for their 2012 nomination.

Thanks to their commitment to BC Children’s Hospital, this year alone through various fundraising efforts, the team managed to raise an incredible $25,000. Wow!

The four Save-On-Foods stores in Prince

George, B.C. are among the four winners

of the 2012 Canadian Grocer Community

Service Awards. These awards recognize the

outstanding contribution grocery retailers in Canada

make to their communities in the form of raising

money for charities, food banks, students, hospitals

and other worthy causes.

The Community Service Awards jury of retail,

marketing and philanthropy experts were impressed

with how these four stores came together on several

occasions to help their community. By working

together these stores accomplished far more than

they could have on their own.

Two initiatives in particular impressed our jury.

The first occurred in April last year when an

explosion occurred at the Lakeland sawmill in Prince

George. Staff from the stores were

on the scene right away, delivering

food to emergency workers and

families of mill

employees; and

the four stores

subsequently worked together to raise money for the

Lakeland Mills fire relief fund through a round up

fundraiser (customers were encouraged to round up

their purchases with the money going to the fund.)

More than $27,000 was raised as a result.

The second was an initiative to help Prince

George’s Junior A hockey team, the non-profit

Spruce Kings, who were not drawing many fans.

The four Save-On-Foods stores created three special

Save-On-Foods community game nights, creating

buzz in-store about the team and excitement by

organizing special events at the games. As a result,

all three games were sold out.

“Our judges loved the fact that the four

Save-On-Foods stores in Prince George stepped

up during a time of crisis in their community,”

said Canadian Grocer’s editor, Rob Gerlsbeck.

“Their managers and staff also

showed creative flair in the way they

supported the town’s hockey team.

all about.”

Community Service Awards Amazingly, this is the third year in a row that we have been selected for Canadian Grocer’s Community Service Award.

In 2010, the three Nanaimo Save-On-Foods were awarded for their annual participation in the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival, which raises money to buy equipment for breast cancer treatment at Nanaimo hospital. The stores rallied together with the community to raise funds and food to hold 2 banquets that are staffed by store volunteers and family members.

With the support of the team and a desire to fill the emptying shelves of the local food bank, Store Manager Tony Klyne lived on the roof of Save-On-Foods Magrath for an entire week earning them the Community Service Award for 2011.

floating to the winner’s circleIt was a team member’s vision that started it all — she had a vision that the team at Clearbrook PriceSmart Foods could win the top prize at the Canada Day Parade in Abbotsford. Well, her vision came true as the team created a spectacular circus-themed float.

Thanks to all their hard work, the float was named the top themed float in the whole parade!

Classic Fore Kids 2012This year’s 17th annual Classic Fore Kids Golf Tournament marked an important milestone in our pledge of $20 million to Child Health BC. With this year’s contribution of $861,000, we have officially reached the halfway mark, raising over $10 million to help kids get the care they need closer to home.

Over 330 OFG suppliers and team members came out to support the cause and had fun with the “Around the Globe in Birdies and Bogies” theme. There was everything from lederhosen to grass skirts and a whole lot of fun!

Thanks to fundraising efforts supported by team members and the commitment of our supplier partners, like Coca-Cola, Maple Leaf and Global Television, OFG has contributed more than $10 million to support Children’s Hospitals in BC and Alberta.

sewing and practicing routines for the buggy drill team.

workplace safetyIt’s been a double win this year in both provinces as we passed our Certificate of Recognition (COR) audits in both BC and Alberta with scores both over 90%. Awarding firms that meet strict criteria on their Health & Safety and Return to Work programs, this WorkSafe initiative is an important step in making sure that we are doing our part to reduce workplace injuries and encouraging faster returns to work.

Russ Haddad ScholarshipIn recognition of Russ Haddad’s longtime contribution to OFG, this scholarship is awarded to a team member who has demonstrated conscientiousness, dedication, integrity and team work.

This year’s recipient of the Russ Haddad Scholarship is Chantelle Neufeld from PriceSmart Foods Chilliwack. An avid animal lover, Chantelle held volunteer positions at two local veterinary hospitals as well as acting as president of the Environmental Club at her high school.

Chantelle’s community involvement includes membership in her high school’s Youth for Youth club as well as volunteering at her local food bank. Chantelle has been accepted into the highly competitive Animal Health Technologist program at Thompson Rivers University.

Steve van der Leest ScholarshipIn recognition of past OFG President Steve van der Leest and his commitment to the environment, helping people in need and to local farmers and ranchers, this scholarship is presented annually to a team member who has worked with the company for at least a year, or the dependent of a team member with at least one year’s service.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Chan, this year’s recipient of the Steve van der Leest Scholarship. Elizabeth is a member of the Willoughby Save-On-Foods team and is currently attending Simon Fraser University and has completed her first two years of studies in the Bachelor of Arts program, majoring in Psychology and minoring in International Studies.

While studying, Elizabeth still finds the time to volunteer as a research associate and work with the Greater Vancouver YFC/Youth Unlimited, helping to support local at risk youth.

Clarence Heppell ScholarshipWe’re very pleased to announce that Kieryn Matthews, daughter of Lucille Brochu from Save-On-Foods Terminal Park has been awarded the Clarence Heppell Scholarship. Kieryn is a leader both in and outside her school, playing an active role in her Student Council as well as practicing as a competitive synchronized swimmer.

This beautiful location takes a cue from its surroundings with its Orchard-inspired design and beautiful atmosphere. Stocked with local favourites, the store is a hit with residents!

Save-On-Foods ScottsdaleSaturday, September 8 was also an exciting day for shoppers of the cottsdale Save-On-Foods as they joined in the festivities for the grand re-opening of the store.

Customers can now find an expanded selection of South Asian inspired products, including vegan and eggless products as well as a wide variety of traditional South Asian sweets.
