A NOTE FROM THE BOARD

Welcome to June! Hopefully warmer and less uncertain times will be with us soon.

Almost 2 weeks ago you should have received our fiscal year-end appeal. We have had a strong response to the letter -- over 5 dozen donations have been received and we’re hope-ful that many more donors will be able to join that list. We are also pleased to announce the receipt of a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Henderson County for the hospital's mobile mammography program.

As we approach the end of the month we will be writing a check to complete our pledge of $1.5 million in support of hospital programs. Thank you for your financial support that makes that check possible!! The end of our fiscal year on June 30 also marks the end of board member terms. This time around we are saying goodbye to a very strong group of leaders: David Amsler, Marketing Committee Chair; Deanna Ellis, VP of Development; Flip Fisher, Audit Commit-tee Chair; and Bud Leonard - Investment Committee Chair. We can't thank them enough for their donation of time, treasures and talent in support of the Foundation and hospital. Five new board members will be joining us on July 1 -- Cam Baker, Galen Reuther, Bill Rushton, Hilton Swing, and Heather Ward. We look forward to the new energy and ideas that these good folks will bring to our board. During this time it has been necessary for the hospital to reduce the hours and compensa-tion for hospital and foundation staff. Our staff has continued performing their jobs - raising money, staying in touch with our donors to see how they are faring at this time, and supporting the COVID –19 appeal for donations of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This has been stressful for our staff and yet they have performed well and deserve our sincere appreciation. As restrictions ease, the hospital is again performing elective surgeries and is ready for patients to visit our urgent care, emergency room and primary care facilities again. And, of course, our office is open. With your help we continue to look for ways to help the hospital. Help us finish this year strong!! Thank you.

When everything seems to be going against you, remember the

airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. Henry Ford As the Pardee Foundation approaches the end of its fiscal year, it is perhaps an understate-ment to say that we have faced some unprecedented challenges. The impact to individual lives and the sustainability of our economic future have endured powerful winds. And yet, individuals and mission-focused organizations con-tinue to weather the storm. Pardee Hospital has remained open and ready to care for any person infected with the COVID-19 virus. Our doctors, nurses, technicians, food service and mainte-nance staff remain on duty and ready to provide the highest quality care. Our Infectious Disease team, led by Dr. Christopher Parsons, has worked closely with local nursing homes and provided patient care in their facilities to prevent the spread of the infections. We have shared information and guidance to over 8,500 people through our hospital and foundation websites. We continue to update these sites with new information related to risk, prevention and support. After nearly three months of uncertainty, we are encouraged by positive changes and acts of kindness, generosity and compassion. Pardee has resumed scheduling elective procedures such as cataract surgery and joint

replacements. Pardee physicians are seeing patients in their offices in addition to their telehealth calls. More than 80 individuals and organizations have donated critical Personal Protective

Equipment (PPE’s) for our staff and patients. This need for PPE is ongoing and we welcome your donations at our Pardee Hospital Foundation office location, 561 Fleming Street, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

We have experienced many “random acts of kindness” including notes on the wind-shields of hospital staff automobiles and do-nated food and flowers. These gestures have definitely contributed to lifting the morale of our hard-working and dedicated staff.

For nearly seventy years, Pardee Hospital has pro-vided compassionate quality healthcare regardless of the storms of change our community has en-dured. Individual donations and community support may never be more needed than at this time. Please consider a fiscal year-end gift to help us continue to meet the COVID-19 challenge in our community.

A very special THANK YOU to the Pardee Foundation Board Members who will be leaving our board at the end of June. Their generous gifts of time, talent, and financial support have enabled the Foundation to raise the funds to provide Pardee UNC Health with essential equipment, programs and capital improvements. Without the leadership of these dedicated board members, none of this would be possible.

Community Foundation Awards Major Grant

The Community Foundation of Henderson County has awarded a $25,000 grant to

Pardee Hospital Foundation for the purchase and

development of a mobile mammography unit

that will provide breast cancer examinations and

care for people in Henderson County and its

neighboring counties.

This grant, along with contributions from

Foundation partners, sponsors, individuals and

fundraising events, will make it possible for

Pardee to provide an essential service for individ-

uals who are unable to travel to the hospital for

diagnostic exams and healthcare advice as it relates to breast cancer. A mobile unit with

state-of-the art equipment, will give Pardee clinicians the ability to conduct exams at

churches, places of employment, and community centers as part of Pardee’s continuing

outreach program.

Mammography can detect cancer early when it is most treatable. When breast cancer is

detected early, the five year survival rate is almost 100%.

Early detection discovered with regular mammograms saves lives.

Dr. David Ellis, M.D. and chief medical officer for Pardee UNC

Health Care has announced his retirement from medical practice

and the closing of Pardee Center for Gynecology.

He will continue to serve as vice president of Medical Affairs and

chief medical officer for Pardee UNC Health Care.

Dr. Ellis has spent his entire OB/GYN career of 32 years in

Hendersonville. He and his family moved to Hendersonville in

1987 where he was a partner with Hendersonville OB/GYN

before founding his own practice in 1998. He is a graduate of

Amherst College in Massachusetts; studied medicine at Tulane

University in New Orleans and completed his residency in

Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Ellis is a

fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has held several positions

with Pardee including medical chief of staff, and as a member of the Board of Directors.

In his current role as chief medical officer, he has operational oversight of multiple depart-

ments. His duties include the coordination of the medical staff activities and championing

clinical pathways.

Donna Hartley To Speak at

2020 Women Helping Women Luncheon The keynote speaker for this year’s Women Helping Women Luncheon, scheduled for Friday, October 16th at Blue Ridge Community College, is Donna Hartley. Hartley’s message is one of learning how to conquer change and achieve transformation through triumph over trials. Faced with insurmountable odds, she learned to be persistent during life-threatening times. When her goal of being an Olympic skier racer was cut short, she bounced back by becoming a surfer. She has been an active organizer of the Special Olympics Winter Games in Northern California, fundraiser for Arts for the Schools, an organization to empower the youth, a

supporter and participant in the Relay for Life Cancer Charity Walk Events, and an advocate for the American Heart Association Go Red For Women Campaign. A former Miss Hawaii and television actress, Donna Hartley shared her compelling story on NBC, ABC, PBS, and in The New York Times. Donna is a master speaker and an intuitive mentor. A sought-after expert on surviving challenges and developing heart centered leadership. Donna Hartley is a member of the National Speakers Association, Screen Actors Guild and the owner of Hartley International. She has six stories in the Chocolate for a Women’s Soul series and two stories in the Chicken Soup series. In addition, she is the author of Fire Up Your Life!, Fire Up Your Intuition!, Fire Up Your Healing! and the Healing Meditation CD and Insights Workbook.

SAVE THE DATE We hope to be able to welcome attendees to Blue Ridge Community College on
