CELEBRATING NINE YEARS...A KITTY STORY!

Once upon a time in 2005 or 2006, there

were two women sitting around socializing talking about getting some other women

together to start a social club. They didn’t have a clue what they would call the group

or what color they would rep or who to ask to join. So after some mini conversations

with various women (the interview process), ten women with vast backgrounds were

selected. The common denominator was

their love for travelling, family, and commu-nity service. In May 2006, Danielle

(Pebbles), Deana (Sexxy), Desi (Hello!), Ina (Voluptuous), Ivy (Poison), Joyce (Mocha),

Loraine (Raine), Natasha (KoKo), Simone (Frenchie), Tamica (QT), Tanja (Tee) and

Vanessa (Poker) became the Kitty Kat Social Club. Their club color was presented and

everyone was wondering why a person

whose favorite color is red chose PINK? They were off to a great start…ideas were

flowing with all the great ideas and partici-pating in community walks. They had their

unofficial coming out at WinterRide 2007;

had their first cabaret Kitty Throwdown and celebrated for any and every reason – espe-

cially birthdays “Kings Dominion Style”. They had their first unofficial retreat to New York

to see the Color Purple and almost got kicked out the hotel – this idea would even-

tually become a yearly and highly anticipat-ed event. A member decided to relocate and

two members decided to leave. Good things happened as well – they always outweighed the bad; hanging out because they were

hungry or wanting to see the latest mov-ie. Another member left the club and they

gained three new members Myesha (Lush’ous), Torrie (Sassy) and Monique

(UNiQ) who fit right in because they fit the

#1 criteria – TOUGH SKIN. Then they hit a

milestone – five years celebrating Kitty style. Their gear was/is/will always be on

point. The Desert Kitty (Pebbles) returned. Things were tense within the club and dy-

namics were starting to change - they bid farewell to another member. They rededi-

cated their selves to their mission and kept

moving forward. They have seen, heard and been through it all (or so it seems) but

in the end they are 11 strong black women who can cuss, fight, cry and laugh together

while having fun. At this turning point of their club they were asked what made them

join the club and they responded…”after forming an impromptu Karaoke group, I

was asked to consider joining a club. I ini-

tially said I didn’t know if I would do well with a group of woman but I would think

about it and to consider it.” “After being selected, I wanted to get to know some

women with common interests. I always did a lot of supporting on my own but when I

saw all the club did, I said this is the club for me.” “Honestly, it was suggested to me

and I thought I would fit in just fine. After

meeting everyone, I remember thinking to myself, who says a group of women can’t

come together and create a bond and share some of the same goals, opinions, and love

for each other without DRAMA!” “It sound-ed like something fun to do even though I

didn’t know all of the details, I knew I couldn’t go wrong with them.” “I wanted to

be among likeminded women who wanted to travel and give back to the communi-ty. Also, to have an outlet from the normal

stresses which come from work and single parenting and wanting to be a part of an

organization focused on sisterhood.” “I wanted the opportunity to be among a

group of drama free women with the same

Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer and song-writer. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal in-fluence on jazz and pop singing

sense of betterment for the communi-

ty and be a part of a group that would not judge me but be there for me

when I needed it, whether it was emotionally, physically, or financial-

ly.” “Now joining a club, especially a club with only women with various

backgrounds; can be extremely hard but being a part of the Kitty Kat Social

Club is unique if nothing else.” “You

ask…what you expected from the club when you joined and you an-

swered…We expected to stand out and get everything we asked for –

loyalty, respect and sisterhood and an unbreakable bond.” “To be able to

hang out with women while serving our community. To have camaraderie

and fun, common love for travel, fami-

ly and friends. The opportunity to ex-plore this new “thing”. To be em-

braced – never judged. To be in the presence of a group of women who

had a sisterly bond so strong and tight that it could not be penetrated by an

outside force, no matter how strong or deceptive it was.” “Thinking it was

going to be just us and do things

without the “social” part and bringing my energy, positivity and ideas to the

newly formed group.” “What we have is a true sisterhood and growing

friendships while making a difference in the community…surpassing all of

our expectations.” “We’ve beaten the odds and are standing the test of

time…We are still the Kitty Kat Social

Club because we are having fun – the club is what I need.” “The love we

have for people is outstanding – with all of the giving back we do and the

support we give to others; overall we spread love to our community and

others and we really stand as one! I swear! We are not devaluing our-

selves and I have no plans to file for

divorce.” “At one point someone joked and said I had to get jumped out and

I didn’t feel like kicking ten other women’s ass…seriously? Although we

get on each other’s nerves, I don’t have a reason to leave.” “Turns out

we have a BLAST together and are the best support group I ever had. We

feel enriched by the community service

we provide and the ability of each of us to give back while acknowledging how

blessed we are.” “I truly enjoy the fel-lowship that we have, the positive en-

ergy and the true meaning of sister-hood amongst us.” “I’m still here be-

cause I genuinely feel like I belong and I get that feeling from all other mem-

bers as well.” “I love my kitties, can’t

see life without them. We love giving back & seeing the appreciation of what

we do - it’s too late to turn back now.”

I AM MY KITTIES’ KEEPER!
