Primary ReportSTUDENTS OF THE WEEK
Students have been busy settling back into school and working hard in their classes. Many students at our last assembly received Bronze and Silver Awards.
RESEARCH PROJECTS IN YEAR 4/5
The students in Year 4/5 have completed an information report on a country or animal of their choice. They followed the process of identifying their topic, locating information from different sources and recording the facts. The next steps were to present their posters and to evaluate the finished work.
There are many skills required to complete these tasks and here are some of the students’ comments about this assignment:
• Damien was proud of his efforts finding out many facts about snakes
• Jye B was proud of how he learned to look up information on the computer
• Kaitlyn was also proud of her computer skills
• Mia enjoyed finding out more about her bearded dragon
• David was proud that he got his report finished on time and put in a huge effort.
The following Students of the Week should also be very proud of their immense efforts.

ZONE PRIMARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Best of luck to the many students who will be proudly representing Merriwa Central School tomorrow at the Zone Athletics Carnival. The carnival will be held at Alroy Park, Singleton Heights. We look forward to hearing about their efforts and results.
MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOL HORSE SPORTS
Merriwa Central School Horse Sports is not far away and we are looking forward to another successful day of competition. The huge horse sports day will be held on Monday August 15 at the Merriwa Showground. Students will have the opportunity to compete in hack, sporting and stockhorse events again this year. Entries are filling quickly and thank you to those keen competitors who have completed the lengthy paperwork required to ensure the safety of our possible 180 participants.
We appreciate all Merriwa Central School staff and community members who have been involved in organising the event. In particular, would like to thank Kellie Porter for her tireless efforts finalising our risk management and entries as well as our P and C for supporting the day by offering to manage the canteen. If any further parents or community members would like to assist on the day please call Kate Jones or Megan Sevil at the Primary campus on 6548 2101. Our P and C would greatly appreciate any additional canteen helpers as the funds raised from the canteen are directly put back into our school.
WHY IS BREAKFAST SO VITAL FOR OUR STUDENTS
It is openly advertised as the most important meal of the day, but one in four Australian children skip breakfast. Children who have breakfast are more likely to arrive at school each morning in a positive mood and be ready to play socially with their peers in the playground before class lessons begin. They are often more patient with their peers and are able to deal with issues which may arise at school. Conversely, a child who does not have breakfast can easily lose concentration in class, have no energy for playtime and snack on their recess or lunch foods as soon as they get to school which results in them feeling hungry later in the day.
A healthy and filling breakfast every day is the best defence against this happening. It also helps children to get into good habits that they can continue through life. Below are some breakfast suggestions which are healthy, economic and quick to prepare.

Merriwa Ringer Page 5
• Cereal with milk, yoghurt and/or fruit• Wholegrain toast, raisin bread or muffins with
fruit spreads, Vegemite or sliced banana• Fresh fruit with yoghurt• Fruit smoothies made with fresh or canned fruit• Porridge with warm milk and fruit
Some children are ‘fussy’ eaters and may say they do not like breakfast but please persist and try other options until you find breakfast foods your child enjoys. By encouraging your children to eat breakfast you are not only helping them to maintain a healthy lifestyle but giving them their best opportunity to succeed academically and socially at school.

Secondary ReportYEAR 7 REPORT
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Year 7 back to Semester 2 of their first year of high school. Although they may have just received reports it is important that they recognise that the job is only half complete.
For some, the half year mark may have verified their own thoughts and feelings and rewarded them with the knowledge that they are thriving at Merriwa Central School. While others may have realised that their efforts so far may have been below par and acted as a timely warning to shift up a gear and begin moving towards the front of the pack. Either way, Year 7 all I ask is you try your hardest, be kind to your peers and have the courage to make use of all opportunities presented to you.
PDHPE, PASS AND SPORTS COACHING REPORT
In PDHPE, Year 7 are currently studying “Why people may use and choose not to use drugs”. This is a timely topic with adolescence being a particularly tricky time to negotiate exposure to the perils of the world while finding their sense of self and getting a taste of adulthood. Parents are the primary educator of our students and it is with your help that we can strengthen the messages of safe choices when it comes to drugs. This can be a particularly difficult subject to discuss at home, but I encourage all parents to have a chat with their children about this topic and the strategies they can use to make informed healthy choices. Understanding family values and attitudes plays a key role in children making positive choices and protecting their health when it comes to illicit substances.
In PASS, students are exploring the topic of physical activity for health and considering the impact that sedentary lifestyles has on the health of our community. As adults, it is important that we take steps to maximise our health and make positive choices when it comes to diet and exercise. Children watch our behaviours and emulate them. Encourage children to be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day, limit exposure to media through electronic devices to a maximum of two hours per day, preferably at night; and perhaps the easiest strategy to employ, break up periods of sitting with regular bouts of activity.
Finally, my Year 12 Sports Coaches are coming to the end of their course and preparing to leave me with only Year 11. I would like to congratulate all of the Sports Coaching students on the wonderful ambassadors they have been for Merriwa Central School over the last two years, as they travelled around the region applying their trade and

St Joseph’s Primary School
FROM THE INFANTS CLASSROOM
Last Friday we were joined by many members of our school community to celebrate Grandparents Day. We celebrate this day annually on the Feast day of St Joachim and St Anne. St Joachim and St Anne were Jesus’ grandparents so on this day we celebrate the relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren. We had many grandparents and adopted grandparents travel great distances to celebrate this wonderful feast day with us. Our Literacy focus in English this term is Visual
Literacy. Students are exploring the main themes and ideas represented through images and how these images affect our understanding, feelings and connection to the characters, events and ideas of a text.
This study has also linked with our learning in PDHPE with different ways people communicate. Stage One have been studying Auslan, looking at different signs to communicate with people non-verbally. Kindergarten have been focussing on what keeps our body healthy, they have enjoyed discussing healthy choices and representing these choices visually.
Our Religion unit is based around the Bible. Infants are learning about the Bible as a sacred book that is venerated by Christians. They learn that it is a book that contains special stories about God and Jesus.
Our HSIE studies have switched focus to Geography. Kindergarten’s focus is on places familiar to them and how people, use and care for the places they interact with. Stage One studies will centre on the weather and seasons. Students will explore the impacts the weather and seasons have on daily life and how these aspects impact on our environment. Not only is our knowledge and understanding growing this term but students will also be observing changes of living things. Students have planted bean seeds and will record changes during their growth.
We will investigate what the difference between living and non living is
Merriwa RingerPage 8
as well as the many changes living things go through throughout their lifespan.
Our annual school play is rapidly approaching and preparations are well and truly under way. We have been developing our dance skills, practising lines and
blocking our movements on stage to entertain and inform our audience. Each performance is based on the good news throughout the decades. Students have enjoyed travelling back in time and learning about historical events that have shaped our nation. We extend an invitation to our community to join us for our Annual Play to be held at the Merriwa School of Arts on September 7.

Sandy Hollow Public School
EDUCATION WEEK
This week is Education Week, a celebration of public education. The theme for this year is ‘shared stories, better learning, stronger communities’.
At Sandy Hollow we share our stories within our school through class activities, visitors to our room, performances and school assemblies. We share our stories with the wider community through social media, newsletters and the internet.
This in turn is helping us to build a stronger bond with our community. Parents and other members of the community are welcomed into our school and are consulted when school plans and initiatives are being devised. As we collaborate with our community we have been able to provide programs that improve learning within our school. Some recent initiatives include QuickSmart maths for Years 4 and 5, MiniLit for Years 1 to 3, Drama (Kindergarten-Year 6) and of course our highly successful sporting schools program which has enabled our students to access basketball, athletics training, golf and Milo cricket. We aim to provide our students with a wide range of activities that they would normally not be able to access. Sandy Hollow is a small school making big things happen!
Congratulations to this year’s recipients of Education Awards:

QUICKSMART
Last week, I spent two days in Sydney completing the second phase of training for Quicksmart. Quicksmart is a program offered to students in Years 4 to 6 who haven’t mastered automatic recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication or division fact. It was a wonderful opportunity to listen to how other schools are implementing the program and comforting to see that other schools have experienced the same problems that we have. Our students will be moving onto problem solving in the next few weeks.
BASKETBALL
This week we started basketball as our next sport in the sporting schools program. There will be no cost for this program as it is covered under our grant. Lessons will be conducted by Mr Huggins.

Another great week had by all at Merriwa Activity Centre, with Fathers Day just around the corner. Children have spent their afternoons crafting and were given a template as a guide before creating their own masterpieces for that special Dad in their lives. It has been great watching and assisting everyone working on this activity, as they all put a different twist and a part of their own personalities to the end product. This craft will continue during the weeks leading up to Fathers Day to ensure all children attending the centre get a chance to create.
Each Wednesday the Merriwa Activity Centre walk to the Library for afternoon tea around the table before using the computers to research and play games or read a book of their choice chosen from the shelves. Drawing has also been a popular activity using different mediums such as crayons and Textas. It was lovely to have Mollie and Ellas’ mum, Jo, call into the the library and spend some time reading with her daughters.
Lego is still very popular at the moment the children have a table set up with Lego and each day they come they seem to add to their city it is a shared creation and its lovely to see everyone sharing and adding their ideas.
With the Rio Olympics just around the corner, we will be implementing some fun activities into our Merriwa Activity Centre program. Today we started the ball rolling, using the internet to research a few facts on this particular country. We discovered many different things during our investigation from religion to currency. So stay tuned for the next mac article where the children will tell you what they have learnt.
STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Thomas McLean - displays school values at all times.

A CPR course will be conducted at the school on Saturday September 3. If you are interested

He demonstrated a good understanding of verb tenses in Grammar lessons and Space concepts in Science last week and was able to justify his opinions in these areas. Jack has been working on a new reading program with Mrs Nairne this term and his increased effort and enjoyment of the program has had a positive impact.
Some of the reasons Jack’s peers voted for him included; “Jack, because he has been very good”, “Jack because he has been working well on the computers” and “Jack, because he is working harder to improve his learning”.
Congratulations Jack, and keep up the great work!
EDUCATION WEEK AT CASSILIS
It is Education Week, this week! Education Week is a celebration of public education but also celebrates the achievements of our wonderful students.
For a long time now, I have received feedback from students suggesting that they would like to bring their pets to school for a day and at the end of Term 2, students wrote short letters with Miss Storrier justifying this opinion.
At Cassilis School we believe that the best type of learning is learning opportunities that are relevant, engaging, student-centred and incorporate the community. Because of this, we have agreed to incorporate pets into our Education Week assembly which will be held this Thursday August 4 at 1.30pm (after lunch which will be held at 1.00pm). Students will receive Education Week awards at this special assembly and will also participate in a speech competition
on their chosen pet. After the assembly, we will end the day with a pet parade where students can choose to enter their pets in the categories of Best Dressed, Most unique, most obedient and/or best talent.
The Canberra Excursion Raffle will be drawn on the day.
We look forward to seeing everyone there to celebrate student achievement and to support our students who have campaigned long and hard for this event to occur!
STUDENT OF THE WEEKJACK SUMPTER-CORNISH
Jack has been voted ‘Student of the Week’ by staff and students this week, for his improved behaviour and effort towards learning.
Last week, Jack displayed improved enthusiasm for learning

MRS BURGESS RETURNS IN WEEK 5
We are looking forward to Mrs Burgess’ highly anticipated return to the full-time Principal role at Cassilis School from August 15 (Week 5).
She has enjoyed spending quality time with her young family throughout her six months of maternity leave but is also looking forward to returning to our beautiful school to support our students in their learning.
Mrs Burgess will be at school teaching Kindergarten-Year 2 students and any other students who will not be attending the Year 3-6 Excursion in Week 5.

TIME TO PLANT YOUR SNOW PEAS!Growing Faith: Connected with God/Luke 11:1-13
The letter to the HEBREWS comes from an unknown author, and was addressed to a Christian community that had grown indifferent, discouraged, and lax – in short, their faith had grown stagnant. So the author provides a kind of historical timeline of some of the great people of the Bible, and tells how their faith sustained them, guided them, and directed their lives.
Today’s reading begins with the famous description of faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” The verses focus on what faith does, rather than on what it is. People reading this letter are encouraged to reap the benefits of an active faith.
Where are we investing ourselves? Is it where we really want to be focused? What corrective action do we need to take?
Rev’d Pat has asked that I remind you all, that Friday services - August 5 and 12 are cancelled due to her being away.
We continue to hold Margaret and Arthur Wright in our hearts as they mourn the death of their daughter Anthea. Let us focus on St Francis who loved all animals and all of God’s creation. Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen Rosalie Drew

a first and a real bonus to the people of Merriwa. Either way, everyone wins, especially the patients.
Annabel has a wealth of experience with diabetes, in fact over 25 years worth. Besides being a credentialed Diabetes Educator and a certified Insulin Pump Trainer, Annabel has completed extensive post-graduate studies and is a Diabetes Nurse Practitioner. Her passion is people, pumps (insulin pumps that is. Not water pumps!) and stabilising insulin levels. She is highly sought after by drug companies, medical companies and diabetes’ associations as a speaker and educator. She also sits on a number of state and national diabetes advisory panels. Merriwa is getting something really special with Annabel!
Together with her partner Tars, they have a company called Action Allied Healthcare which specialises in all things diabetes, including nutritionalists and exercise physiologists. Headquartered in Nelson Bay, they and their staff run 11 clinics along the coast and stretching well into the Upper Hunter. Local clinics in Murrurundi, Scone, Muswellbrook, Aberdeen, Merriwa and Denman all focus on diabetes education and management under the Action Diabetes name.
Patients can see Annabel at one of her monthly clinics at Merriwa Surgery. Whether it is insulin adjustment, interpretation of pathology, prescription adjustment of medicines, lifestyle modification or simply coming in to understand diabetes, its effects and successful management. Annabel provides the service and with a warming smile. Those needing or contemplating insulin pumps can also see Annabel.
The other great bit of news is that it is easy to get to see Annabel who comes here under a government program, the Priority Allied Health Service (PAHS) which is managed by Hunter Primary Care. All GP’s can simply refer patients with diabetes, pre diabetes or people who will potentially develop diabetes via a PAHS referral form. If this presents any difficulty whatsoever, patients can simply ring Action Diabetes directly
Action Diabetes on 4981 5825 and talk to Julian or Tars.
The Action Diabetes motto is “Simply Better Care” something that Annabel and Tars take great pride in, particularly in being able to deliver it to rural areas as they are both country born and bred.

It is not only ladies who appreciate the gift of a lovely necklace, earrings or bracelet. Come in and peruse the displays for the perfect gift for someone you love, today.
PUZZLE MONTH
August is Puzzle Month at Merriwa NewsXpress. It is the perfect time of year to stay put in the warm cosiness of our homes and puzzles are the perfect way to do this. Get out of the bitter cold of August with a puzzle. This is always a dreary month weather-wise, so to find something to celebrate we have decided that ALL of our puzzles are 10% off. Children’s pin puzzles, children’s Ravensberger puzzles, 500 piece puzzles, 1000 piece puzzles. Not only this, every puzzle you buy gives you the chance to win a puzzle roll, valued at $69.99. Puzzle rolls allow you to pack your puzzle away (which is handy when you need the table to have dinner) without having to pull apart all of your efforts so far.
INGREDIENTSHealthy Banana Bread
• 1/3 cup melted coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil or high quality vegetable oil*
• 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
• 2 eggs• 1 cup mashed ripe
bananas (about 2½ medium or 2 large bananas)
• 1/4 cup milk of choice or water• 1 teaspoon baking soda• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract• 1/2 teaspoon salt• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more to
swirl on top• 1 3/4 cups white whole wheat flour or regular
whole wheat flour
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (165 degrees Celsius) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan
2. In a large bowl, beat the oil and honey together together with a whisk. Add the eggs and beat well, then whisk in the mashed bananas and milk. (If your coconut oil solidifies on contact with cold ingredients, simply let the bowl rest in a warm place for a few minutes or warm it for about 10 seconds in the microwave)
3. Add the baking soda, vanilla, salt and cinnamon, and whisk to blend. Lastly, switch to a big spoon and stir in the flour, just until combined. Some lumps are ok
4. Pour the batter into your greased loaf pan and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon
5. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the bread cool in the loaf pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool for 20 minutes before slicing.

KINGSLYN UNDER 10’S
We travelled to Muswellbrook on Saturday and played against Singleton. The whole team played brilliantly and I was proud of each and everyone one of them for their efforts. Player of the Week went to Jack Shannon for a huge effort in his front row runs, a big improvement in defence and some great quick passes in first receiver. Well done Jack. Our try scorer’s were Jerone Andrews and Thomas Hunt. We play at Singleton this weekend for our last game of the season. Good luck Under 10’s, see you at training.

LEAGUE TAG GIRLS
The Merriwa Denman League Tag girls travelled to Muswellbrook on Saturday for a round-robin against Muswellbrook, Singleton and Scone. The girls played well in their first game against Muswellbrook, they all defended as a team and made it difficult for Muswellbrook to score a lot of points. They did not win the game but they have shown great improvement.
In their second game they played a well drilled Singleton team. They were playing pretty good but unfortunately had a few injuries which resulted in them playing with eight for more than half the game and only seven for some of it. The girls did not give up considering the huge advantage Singleton had. Mackenzie, Izabella and Tylana did Merriwa very proud with their performance and dedication, as did the remaining Denman girls, two of the Merriwa girls actually continued playing with an injury so that the side did not lose any more players. Unfortunately some girls did not show the same dedication to the team, as some injured girls who could not play for the remainder of their game then joined another team in the next round to play for them.
Due to the number of injuries the girls did not play their last game but a big thank you to the coaches, trainers and mangers for giving up your time to help these girls every week.

ClubIGA UNDER 9’S
On Saturday, the Under 9’s travelled to Muswellbrook where they took on Denman. It was a very tough game of footy with lots of defence. Jackson scored the only try for Merriwa, but made some great runs and helped out in defence a lot. Harry also made great breaks, but unfortunately was pulled up just short of the line. Riley, stepping up from the Under 8’s, made great tackles and talking in defence. Cody ran well and tackled strong. Harry Davis was excellent in defence and showed just how eager he was to play. Duncan made a few great runs and was very loud in defence. Logan’s runs were strong, showing just how important it is to never give up.
Player of the Week went to Duncan Harrison. Duncan’s runs were strong and he tackled well and was consistant with his tackles. He communicated well when we were defending, encouraging everyone to move up and spread out. Duncan never gave up throughout the entire game or put his head down, which earned him Player of the Week. Good work Duncan!

Merriwa Magpies travelled to Singleton for their last game of the season.
It was an early start for the ladies who played at 10.15am. We played a hard game but unfortunately were not able to win.
The score being 20-6.
Well done ladies. Thank you for the season and we hope you return next year. Thank you Reg for coaching us. I bet it wasn’t quite what you expected.
Merriwa Rugby League Football Club
Reserve Grade kicked off at 12.30pm. Before the game all jerseys were placed on the table, numbers facing down, each player had to pick one jersey, they could either keep it or swap once. We had some great positions on the day.
I believe that the boys played better in their new positions than they did on a normal day.
Like League Tag, Reserve Grade were unable to end with a win. Score being 40-18.
Good work boys, see you all next year. Thank you also to Matt for coaching Reserve Grade.
Thank you to the committee, all players, coaches, our great sponsors and the referees (although we don’t always agree with your calls, without you the games wouldn’t be possible).

It seems that society today has had a change in trend leaning towards maintaining a more mentally and physically fit body and mind set. With this in mind, each week the Ringer will place a little writeup to help support those striving to improve their health. At the end of each article will be the location of where the information has been taken from. This week we will start with two exercises that can be completed in the comfort of your own home.
Squats (for hamstrings, quadriceps, glutes, and core): Stand with your feet slightly wider than hips and toes pointing slightly out at approximately 30-40 degree angle. Stand tall, keeping your spine neutral and push the hips back as if to sit back on a chair as you inhale. Your back should be straight and not rounded, and hands stretched out in front (palms facing the ground). Push through the heels, squeeze your glutes and come up with an exhalation. That is one rep of a squat. Aim to do about 10 to 15. Inhale - down and exhale - up.
Wall push-ups (for chest, shoulders and triceps): Place your hands slightly wider than shoulders on the wall (shoulder height) and your feet away from the wall at a slant angle (the more the angle, the more difficult). Inhale as you bend the elbows downwards next to your ribs and exhale as you push the entire body up (do not come back to the erect standing position).
Remember: The whole body from crown of the head to toe remains in one line. The hips should not dip, the spine should not arch as you go down and push up from the wall. Keep the core strong and alive and use it along with your arms to push up.
• Do 10 to 15 reps with control, the slower the better
• Breathing should be along with the movement and not before or after
• Once this gets easier, decrease the angle between your body and the floor
• Graduate to holding the lower position for 5 to 10 counts
• Once this gets easy, challenge yourself by repeating the exercise against a high bed, then a sofa and gradually on the floor with your body parallel to the floor.
Keeping fit is important to lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression while also building muscle and controlling your weight. Always talk to your doctor before beginning a new workout or eating program.http://www.thehealthsite.com/fitness/get-fit-with-simple-home-workouts/
