Dear Parishioners, 1. The Instruction Manual In the First Reading, God gives Moses and the Israelites the ten commandments. These are God’s basic instruction manual for life. In Christ’s Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5-7), that basic instruction manual is supplied with more details. The ten commandments forbid murder. The Sermon on the Mount commands you actually to love your enemy, turn the other cheek to him, and so on. The rules of God’s instruction manual for us are helpful; but, as we all have learned, it is hard to know in what circumstances they apply. Suppose you interpret the commandment about turning the other cheek to apply to someone who is beating his wife. If you apply it to mean that you should not try to stop him, you will simply be cooperating with his evil. The trick is to see that the commandment about turning the other cheek has to be applied in the context of the broader rule: love your enemy. If you enable your enemy to become more evil, how have you loved him? Elsewhere in the Gospel, Christ uses a whip to drive the moneychang- ers out of the Temple. In doing this, he helps us understand how to apply the rules. In cases where turning the other cheek would make your enemy worse instead of better, loving your enemy requires helping him to stop his evil in some other way. And that is why the same Christ who gave the Sermon on the Mount drives the moneychangers out of the Temple. If he had turned the other cheek to the money changers, he would have been an enabler of their evil. But it is good for them, as well as for others, that they stop the evil they were doing. And so Christ uses force to get them to stop. Here is the thing to notice, then. God’s instruction manual for life is not limited just to the sets of rules in the ten commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. There is a medieval saying: every act of Christ is a teaching for us (Omnis Christi actio nostra est instructio). Christ’s life and actions, as they are set out in the Gospels, are our best help for seeing how to live our lives well. Our best instruction manual is Christ himself. And so God, who lacks for nothing, is glad to have the gift of our sacrifices, not because he gets something great from them, but because we do. 2. als global initiative to end hunger by 2025, an initiative strongly supported by Pope Francis. I invite you all to take up this year’s appeal . Project Compassion envelope and boxes are available in the gathering space for you to take home. 4. 24 hours for The Lord Pope Francis has welcomed once again the proposal of 24 hours for the Lord. This comes on the auspices of the pontifical council for the promotion of the new evangelisation. The idea is that parishes will have a special period of prayer for this intention. The intention this year is “God rich in mercy.” Here at All Hallows, the Church will remain open for a 24 hour period for prayer and reflection, beginning with Mass at 9am on Friday 13th March and concluding with Mass at 9am on the 14th March. In addition there will be a special Mass on Friday evening at 7pm followed by adoration and holy hour and concluding with benediction at 8.30pm. Please consider joining us for this special time of prayer. 5. Planned Giving Thank you to those who are part of the planned giving envelope system which supports our parish and school.

The counters would greatly appreciate if you could write the amount enclosed in the space provided on your envelope, as this would significantly assist them with their time. 6. Farewell Fr Andrew As most of us are probably aware by now Fr An-drew received an sudden appointment as assis-tant priest at Cronulla parish. We thank Andrew for his time here and we wish him all the best on his new appointment which starts this weekend. Please keep him in your prayers. 7. Commissioning This Sunday we will commission the Sacramental Team at the 10am Mass. Please keep them in your prayers as they do the important work of preparing the parish children to receive the sacraments. God Bless Fr. Greg

More than 340,000 Australians are living with dementia – a number expected to increase to 400,000 in less than a decade. Dementia can affect anyone, but the risk of dementia increases with age. The early signs of dementia are very subtle and may not be immediately obvious. The majority of older people do not develop dementia however the majority of people living with dementia are elderly. Come along and join our expert panellists to find out about dementia, what causes it and what evidence there is for preventing dementia and promoting healthy ageing.
