Dean’s Message

We have had much to celebrate in the past year as our business school embraces a new begin-ning as the George Herbert Walker School of Busi-ness & Technology. Yes, our name has changed but our high standards of excellence in teaching and learn-ing continue to be exemplified by our faculty around the world. The work highlighted in this document truly illustrates the very best of our faculty.

In this publication we have high-lighted the areas that make the George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology stand out: our commitment to teaching; the integration we provide for our students by melding our exper-tise with others; the passion for research and discovery we have in our fields of study; the applica-

tion of our knowledge outside the classroom and the emphasis we place on sharing what we

have learned with a broader con-stituency through outreach, discipline and community engagement.

It has long been my strong belief that the future belongs to those who can see it. That’s why in this publication you will see that the Walker School of Business is made up of forward thinkers

who, because they are people of accomplishment, do not let things happen to them. They are cata-lysts. By spotlighting their work, we give proof to our students and alumni all over the world that they can achieve as well. Benjamin Ola. Akande, DeanGeorge Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology

Teaching At the Walker school of Business & Technology, teaching is embed-ded as the foundation of every-thing we do. Faculty use teaching and instruction to enable our students’ intellectual as well as interpersonal growth. It is our mission to ensure the develop-ment of profound, useful knowl-edge in every student we mentor. Along with those highlighted in this section, two of our faculty have published major text books

in their fields which will allow them to impact the lives and pro-fessions of more students outside their own individual classrooms. Dr. James Brasfield, chair of the Walker School of Business’ management department, has embraced his more than 30 years of teaching, researching and writing on health care in the pub-lication Health Policy: The Decade Ahead. Dr. Ali Ovlia’s new book Accounting Information systems: The Crossroads of Accounting and IT is set to help students around

the world understand and master business-specific accounting systems.

BRENDA BOYCE (Associate Pro-fessor, Computer Science) Developed and implemented

learning activities based on scaffolding instruction for the Systems Concepts course (COSC 5060). Scaffolding instruction allows the students to break complex tasks into easier steps, which facilitates student achieve-ment.

Growing as educators comes only through continuous research into existing knowledge or the unearthing of new information. It is through this research in the form of professional publications or presentations that members of our faculty show evidence of their conscientious, systematic inquiry. The result is a validation and refinement of that knowl-edge that can be shared with the world.
