Luther Preuss was deeply involved in the original negotiations between Welch and the AVS, in establishing the award. Welch recipients present were: Hickman (1972), Holland (1976), Hagstrum (1974), Redhead (1975), and Wehner (1971). Marion Churchill joined the AVS staff as Meeting Manager, prior to the 1981 Annual Symposium. Churchill retired in 2000. Gerald Lukovsky became JVST Editor in 1980, and in 1983 was appointed Editor-in Chief after the Journal was published in two separate series, A and B. Gerry retired as JVST Editor in 2010. In May 1979, Marcia Schlissel was hired to handle the increasing course registration. Marcia brought a new persona to AVS; outside of AVS, she was a singer in a band.
