CELEBRATING 39 YEARS OF GIVING

39th Annual Thanksgiving Ingathering

Saturday, November 3, 2018

The Thanksgiving Ingathering is a way for Iowa United Methodists to address hunger problems locally and around

the world

THIS BOOK CONTAINS VERY IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE 2017 THANKSGIVING INGATHERING BOOK

USE THIS BOOK FOR 2018

2

United Methodists of Iowa Thank you for your support of the 2017 Ingathering

We did not quite make our million dollar target in 2017. We still had a wonderful Ingathering day with everyone participating. A big thank you to those who help in the kitting areas and working at the various activities at each site. The two UMCOR trucks brought 64,000 lbs. of kits to Baldwin, LA. We are proud that 2018 will be our 39th year of following God’s expectations. We are still amazed how well the five sites (Cedar Falls, Cherokee, Greenfield, Mt Pleasant and Webster City) work together throughout the year to make each Ingathering a success. In addition to the kits and other in kind items, we support Church World Service, Heifer International, Self-Help International, and Mobility World Wide of Hawarden (formerly called P. E. T.). We are able to donate more funds to the eight districts this year because we had all the data available to make a better decision. The task force has set undesignated funds for 2017 ingathering to each of our eight districts of $6,250 for distribution to local food pantries and other hunger alleviation agencies. UMCOR has changed how they are assisting countries outside the United States. There will be no overseas shipments starting in 2018. Therefore the only kits they are asking for in 2018 are CLEANING KITS, SCHOOL KITS (WITH OR WITHOUT BAGS OR BAGS ONLY) AND HYGIENE KITS. At this time ingathering will not be collecting cleaning kits unless another U.S. disaster happens. We pray this does not happen. Each host site is just that, a host. They need the cooperation of all of our churches to make Saturday, November 3, 2018 a success. Each site needs volunteers to help set up, serve meals, run bazars, auctions and bake sales, taking care of the vouchers and funds, packing kits and loading of the UMCOR trucks. To help, contact your site’s contact person listed in this booklet. Let’s make 2018 another success with a goal of over $1,000,000.00. We are always looking for people to serve on the Thanksgiving Ingathering Task Force. We have two meetings a year in Des Moines.

THE UMCOR DEPOT

A PLACE OF MISSION FOR UNITED METHODISTS

UMCOR collects hygiene, school, and cleaning kits for distribution within the United

States. Kits help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies

when a disaster strikes. International distribution of relief supplies were discontinued by

December 31, 2017. Relief grants will be offered to international partners to allow for local

purchase and assembly of kits which are more culturally appropriate.

Note: Patriotic symbols, such as flags, do not need to be removed from relief kits. In the past,

UMCOR requested that these were removed to ensure relief kits could move easily through

international customs.

UMCOR KITS

HYGIENE KITS help disaster victims reclaim their dignity and self-respect and are used

as teaching tools with children. When people can maintain personal hygiene, their overall

health improves. Please include $1 per kit in the Thanksgiving Ingathering check

delivered to the site. It will be used by the UMCOR Depot to purchase toothpaste.

1 new hand towel (15”x25” up to 17”x27”) 1 new washcloth 1 bath-sized bar of soap in wrapper (3 oz. or larger); No Ivory or Jergens 1 large, sturdy comb (longer than 6 inches)

1 new toothbrush in original sealed wrapper, not child-sized

6 band aids (3/4”-1”)

1 metal nail file or fingernail clipper (no emery boards or toenail clippers)

Lay out hand towel and lay washcloth flat in center. Place rest of items on top of washcloth. Fold sides of towel to cover items. Fold one end of towel so it covers all items. Grasp bundles

of items and roll over rest of towel tightly. Place rolled bundle in one gallon zip-lock bag. VALUE $12 plus $2 shipping

SCHOOL KITS provide tools for education, which changes lives.

(total of 210-250 sheets of paper) 1 blunt-end scissors (metal blades)

1-30 cm metric ruler 1 pencil sharpener (1” minimum) 1 box of 24 crayons (ONLY 24) 6 unsharpened pencils with

finished-size handles OR a zip-lock bag. See www.UMCOR.org/umcor/relief-supplies for

updated instructions. Turn school items sideways and slide into cloth bag. Fold over top of bag

so loose items don’t fall out. DO NOT put items in both zip-lock bag and in the cloth bag.

REMINDERS FOR ALL KITS

Use ONLY the list of items for the kits in this book (Throw away old lists)

Use ONLY new and unwashed items in kits.

Send money for toothpaste separately on remittance form, NOT in kit.

May send empty school bags; they are valued at $3 each.

May send school kits in plastic bags; they are valued at $8 each.

Pack no more than 10 school kits per box.

BAZAAR & LIVE AUCTION INFORMATION

BAZAAR ITEMS All bazaar items should be of outstanding quality and are to be handmade and new. At sites where allowed, baked goods are also in high demand. Check individual site schedules for any restrictions.

Each bazaar item must be tagged with the church name and number and price in order for your church to receive credit. (Please pin tags on cloth items).

Churches donating items with no church name or number will not receive credit for these items.

The site committee will donate any unsold items not claimed by the donating church at the end of the day.

QUILTERS AND CRAFTERS Both quilts and woodcraft items will be featured at our Ingathering auctions. Your creativity and long hours of work will be the highlight of the show! Auction items will be displayed and then sold during the auctions. POLICIES The quilt/woodcraft auction cashier will have available an “Acknowledgement of Donation” form for the buyers when they pay the cashier after the auction. This donation form may be needed by the buyer of any outstanding large quilt or woodcraft item depending upon the purchase price, because the donation form is necessary for tax purposes if the buyer has paid more than $250 ABOVE the Fair Market Value (appraised value) for the item. The form attached to the auction item may be used to fill out the “Acknowledgement of Donation” form. The donation form can be signed by the auction cashier and the site chair. Only the person or church donating an auctioned craft may designate it to any of the five Thanksgiving Ingathering projects. This information must be attached to the Remittance Form for proper crediting. ATTENTION! Churches looking for sturdy material for making school bags for UMCOR: the Wilton UMC has rolls of material available. This material is from Allsteel in Muscatine and is good quality upholstery material. If you want, they will send it to you. Twenty yards costs about $10 to $13 to ship. You can also pick up material at the Wilton UMC, 1401 Maurer, Wilton, IA. Call for church hours at 563-732-2084.

The quilt/woodcraft auction cashier will have available an “Acknowledgement of Donation” form for the

buyers when they pay the cashier after the auction. This donation form MAY be needed by the buyer of any

large item depending on the purchase price, because the donation form is necessary for tax purposes if the

buyer has paid more than $250 above the Fair Markel Value (appraised value) for the item. The form

attached to the auction item may be used as the “Acknowledgement of Donation” form, when signed by

the auction cashier and the site chair.

The Fair Market Value (appraised value) should be determined by the donating church group for each of their donated items and written on the above form before the quilt or woodcraft item is brought to the Thanksgiving Ingathering auction site. For most tied comforters, baby quilts, wall hangings, or other small projects, it would be very rare for them to bring the $250 above the appraised value that would require the “Acknowledgement of Donation” form required for tax purposes.

The tax deduction may be taken for any price paid above the appraised or fair market value as a donation to the Thanksgiving lngathering.

A good way to promote quilts is to display them in the donating church and take reserve bids. Highest bids for a given item often come from a local church member or person in the community.

HEIFER INTERNATIONAL

This year, instead of sending material gifts to your friends and family, send the gift of an animal in their name to a struggling family. It will help families improve nutrition and income and help get children to school. Gift of an ark — $5,000 includes: 2 sheep, 2 trios of rabbits, 2 pigs, 2 oxen, 2 flocks of chickens, 2 beehives, 2 trios of ducks, 2 goats, 2 donkeys, 2 camels, 2 flocks of geese, 2 cows, and 2 llamas Your gift makes a difference in the lives of people all over the world. Heifer has a ripple effect. One gift turns into many, as more and more lives are transformed through Heifer’s cornerstone of passing on the gift. Each recipient of an animal promises to give back to the community by passing an offspring of their animal on to a neighbor in need — extending the reach of hope.
