Home-Start Kennet Summer Newsletter 2018
Celebrating 30 Years of Supporting Families in Our Community!
Hello from the HSK Team
Hooray! Summer has arrived at last – we hope
you’re enjoying the lovely weather.
Lots has happened since our
last newsletter! We’ve said
hello to 3 new team
members – Mick Haynes,
Charles Nettlefold Trustees
and Jo Kent, Fundraiser.
We’ve also welcomed two new
volunteers, Jane and Nikki .
The team has been busy too - attending events,
exploring funding opportunities as well as
supporting our families and volunteers.
We’ve successfully completed our pilot MIMO
project – ‘Thank You’ to Claire Ansell and Caz
Flippance and the volunteers for their hard work on
this. Fingers crossed, we can secure funding to
kick off another programme this autumn.
As ever, we’d like to say ‘Thank you’ to our
Volunteers, without whom so many of our families
would be struggling to cope alone. The work you
do in your own time to support families is simply
incredible. Thank you too to our trustees and
supporters – we really appreciate
your contribution to HSK,
however big or small.
After the success of our Family
Day at the Cotswold Wildlife Park
last year, we’re delighted to say,
we’re doing it again! Please try
and join us on August 15th
2018.
We’re inviting our HSK
families, volunteers and
staff – it’s a wonderful
opportunity to enjoy some
time together and have fun
with the children. Penny
the Penguin may come
along! Lester the Lion will
make a reappearance too!
Wishing you all a very
enjoyable summer, The
HSK team.
HSK meets the High Sheriff of Wiltshire
Nicky Alberry visited HSK last month – meeting
Tania Rackham, Scheme
Manager. During her tenure
as High Sheriff, Nicky is
particularly interested in
supporting organisations
who help victims of
Domestic Abuse. Nicky was
interested to hear how HSK
supports families and has given us some useful
contacts to connect with. We’re delighted to have
been invited to the High Sheriff’s Summer
Reception in July; held at the STEAM Museum,
Swindon, it promises to be a great evening!
New Volunteer Training – September.
We’d love to recruit more volunteers to help us
support more families.
Please help us spread the word and
encourage others to join our
outstanding team of Home-Start
volunteers! Our next training course
starts in September in Tidworth.
HSK attends Cheque Presentations
We’ve been fortunate enough to attend two
cheque presentations recently. In May, Jo Owen –
Jones, Trustee, received £1,000 from the Mayor
of Marlborough Mervyn Hall – and thanked him
for supporting HSK over the last year as one of
his chosen charities.
Devizes Town Hall was the venue for the Devizes
Lions Presentation evening in June where Jo Kent,
Fundraiser, thanked the Lions for their kind
donation of £250.

again in May as they took on Marlborough Town
FC in a charity football match. Caz Flippance and
Jo Kent went along to cheer them on!
Thank you to the Battalion for their energetic
fundraising! !
Introducing new Trustees Mick Haynes and
Charles Nettlefold.
Mick Haynes
I joined Home – Start Kennet in
April, having retired in
February after 46 years in
uniform.
From Pts soldier to Lt Col in
the army, I enjoyed a hugely rewarding career which
saw me serve in Cyprus, Germany, Norway, Canada,
Kuwait as well as the UK; periodically deploying on
operations to Northern Ireland, Iraq and Bosnia on
operations. My roles in the army were hugely varied
and I gained extensive experience in training, HR,
logistics and infrastructure.
Married to Elaine for 40 years with two grown up
sons, I completely understand the unique challenges
that Army family life brings. As ‘Army’ HSK Trustee,
I’m keen to use this experience and my knowledge of
how the Army works, to support the excellent service
that HSK delivers to Army families.
I’m a Churchwarden team member at St John’s Pewsey, a trustee of the PWO Regimental Museum in York and enjoy my rugby. I’m Head Coach at Pewsey Vale RFC and if there’s a rugby international on TV, you’ll not see me far away from it! Charles Nettlefold.
Living in Pewsey and wanting to support a local
charity, I was introduced to Home - Start by Reach
Volunteering.
Home-Start appealed because it offered the powerful
combination of a dedicated team working together to
help families in need of support. Given the
environment where social funds have become more
difficult to access and where the market is
increasingly competitive for charity funding, I’m
hoping my career in banking will be an asset in
finding financial support for Home-Start.
Outside of Home-Start, I’ve written two books of
historical biography and am currently writing a third
on financial history of the UK. I relax by trying to
make the garden beautiful .
Mimo Pilot Success
We’ve enjoyed fantastic feedback from military
mums who took part in the MIMO project. Mimo
(Moving in, Moving On) was launched in October
2017 with the twin aim of supporting families new
to the area as well as those moving on. Delivered
in a group setting, with a play worker on hand to
support the children, courses were held in
Tidworth, Perham Down, Bulford and Larkhill.
Claire Ansell, who led the project,
explained that that the focus of the
8 week course was on empowering
families to seek solutions and self -
identify next steps to achieve their
future goals. The sessions included
a Speaker Day – where
organisations were invited along to
provide information about local
services.
Claire said, “People enjoyed new making new
connections and new friendships…everyone
learned something.” One parent described MIMO
as ‘like someone has switched on the light at the
end of the tunnel’ which I think really shows the
impact Mimo’s had.’ Marcia enjoys Buckingham Palace Garden Par-

Our Treasurer, Marcia Johnson, enjoyed a special day
out recently – as a guest at the Queen’s Garden Party.

she got on!
Raising our profile at The Co-op!
New team member, Penny the Penguin, has been
busy lately - promoting HSK in the Pewsey and
Market Lavington Co-Ops.
Joining Pewsey Vale Primary School and Carer’s
Support, HSK was invited to the launch of the
newly refurbished Pewsey Co-Op on the 15th
and
16th
June. Volunteer Bex and Jo Owen – Jones
came along to support the event – with Bex
bringing her delicious homemade cake!
Meanwhile, Penny
stood proud in
Market Lavington on
the 9th
June inviting
shoppers to take
leaflets, balloons and
(more!) cake. Thank
you to the Co-Op and
Bex and Jo for their
support.
Don’t Forget! Become a Co-op Member and

Dunelm Fundraising Weekend
Whilst the nation celebrated the Royal Wedding
in May, Home – Start Kennet joined in the
fundraising fun at Dunelm, Swindon.
Home – Start UK is Dunelm’s chosen charity and
stores nationwide took part in fundraising
activities with their local Home – Start branch.
Jo Kent, Tania Rackham, Jo Owen – Jones and
Angie Sanders enjoyed talking to shoppers
about Home–Start Kennet whilst cheering on
Dunelm Team Leader, Lynn, on her 100 mile
static bike ride challenge!
Thanks to Angie and Jo Owen Jones for
supporting the event. If you’d like to help at the
next Dunelm event in August, please let Jo Kent
know.
Calne—Building Community Connections
Jo Kent joined other local charities and
organisations recently at the first Calne
Community Connections Event. Held at Calne Town
Hall, the event was a great opportunity to network
and share information and ideas about fundraising
and volunteer recruitment. HSK is in Calne again
on the 30th
June at the Volunteer Recruitment Fayre
in Calne library.

Volunteer Coffee and Catch Up
It was lovely see you and your friends at our June
Volunteer catch up session. We enjoyed hearing
about how friendships are made and especially
enjoyed meeting some (much!) younger friends -
who enjoyed playing with the toys and Penny the
Penguin.
Thank you to Volunteers Leah and Amy
We’ve been fortunate enough to have had the
services of two creative volunteers recently. Leah
Eagleton, who is studying Graphic Design at
college, produced a Welcome Flyer from new
Fundraiser, Jo Kent, whilst Graphic Designer, Amy
Robinson, produced a new Home-Start leaflet to
support our fundraising events. Both leaflets look
so fresh and appealing. Thank you Leah and Amy!
