I considered writing about the relevance of the federal electoral college in the 21st century. After all, our American Bar Association, after due consideration, called for its demise nearly fi fty years ago. But this is December, so bah, humbug on that column.
Happy coming winter solstice, Festivus,
Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, St. Stephen’s Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve to those of you who celebrate one or many of these December holidays and their related customs and rituals. Many involve light to offset our long nights. Some celebrate with special music, food and other nostalgic and heartwarming aspects. You deserve some time with dear ones after another hardworking year. Gifts too.
We will get and give our usual share of legally themed ties, scarves, mugs, books and briefcases. Consider another option.
Viewing or giving fi lms and television shows featuring iconic titles like To Kill A Mockingbird or Perry Mason, or more modern and quirky streaming programs like Better Call Saul or Goliath, can be fun or moving. Great fi lms range from 1928’s The Passion of Joan of Arc through Twelve Angry Men, Inherit the Wind and several others. TV shows run the gamut from Perry Mason to Ally McBeal, Rumpole of the Bailey, and Boston Legal. We all have personal cultural favorites that feature attorneys.
The fi lm And Justice for All featured Al Pacino only several years after The Godfather fi lms were released. I saw it in Spokane, Washington with a group of fellow public defender and prosecutor interns, many from “back East”, while we were in law school. Its intense and gritty portrayal of over the top characters in a corrupt system was entertaining and fun. But we agreed that it was nothing like the new, quiet and modern court rooms and the quiet, trustworthy judges we appeared in and before. Then I returned to Youngstown and clerked in its law department for a while in the
early 80s. Wow. Many of the scenes were acted out yet again, in the ultimate reality show.
Pacino’s fi lm and The Verdict with Paul Newman, about a hard drinking, down on his luck whistleblower taking on a large law fi rm and a diocese over a hospital death, have something in common with each other, and my two favorite Christmas stories. All are ultimately about redemption from darkness to light. We
optimistically hope that we can make a difference in this world, whether large or small. These are the classic themes of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life, two supernatural holiday stories. I was fortunate enough to have portrayed several characters in different versions of A Christmas Carol over many years at the Players Guild, from a younger, skinnier Bob Cratchit to an older, pleasant and portly Fezziwig, to cold, hard Scrooge. I never tired of the message. Scrooge’s nephew cheerfully defended the Christmas holiday as “a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of ...when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely...”
So please continue to open up our hearts over these diverse holidays in whatever way suits you. Perhaps our community service projects, and by making a reservation to attend this year’s Bar Association Holiday Party on December 2nd?
And let’s thank our following legal colleagues for the gift of their many years of legal service to our community. They were recently honored by the Ohio State Bar Association: 50 years – Richard Allerton, John Kurtzman, Thomas Lombardi, Victor Marsh and James Snively.

The Stark County Bar Association is once again sponsoring a Giving Tree through the Community Christmas program. If you haven’t participated in the past, all you need to do is stop by the Bar Office after November 4th and select a tag from the tree. On the tag is the age and sex of the person, clothing size and gift suggestions. When you take a tag you are responsible for purchasing a gift or gifts that meet the criteria on the tag,
with a limit of $25.00 per person. You then return the wrapped gifts to the Bar Office, along with the tag. The gifts are scheduled to be picked up by the Community Christmas program on December 9 th. The program really does make a difference in the lives of children and the elderly who otherwise would not have a “Merry Christmas.”

Giving Tree
Family Living Center Clothing Drive The Stark County Bar Association Community
Involvement Committee is sponsoring a clothing drive for the Family Living Center located in Massillon. Last year alone, the Family Living Center provided approximately 8,500 nights of shelter to individuals and families. With the cold weather and holidays approaching, the Community Involvement Committee is reaching out to all Stark County Bar Association members to donate new or gently used socks, hats,
scarves, gloves, coats, and deodorant for children, women and men. These items are much needed as the Family Living Center provides shelter for infants to senior citizens.
Donations may be dropped off at the Bar Office by December 16, 2016. Your generosity will help give homeless families in Stark County hope and warmth this holiday season and is much appreciated.

to obtain an advanced degree, and (2) because the profession allows for a comfortable lifestyle. When you meet some of these people, you realize that in some cases few differences separate your life and theirs. You have benefi ted from a stable family life and the ability to attend both college and graduate school. The inequality of opportunity is sometimes the only difference. You can make life better in
our community one client at a time. For these and other reasons, we have a duty to give to the less fortunate and volunteer our time to assist our local institutions.
What is your time commitment?
You invest as much or as little time as you have available. However, whenever participating in any volunteer capacity, it is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your professionalism and depth of commitment. Therefore, once you commit, it is important to treat these opportunities as you would any other client matter or professional engagement.
What is your advice to other lawyers getting involved?
There are always opportunities; you just have to look for them. The sense of accomplishment and satisfaction will surprise you. Also, serving others is a humbling experience which, at times, puts our own challenges in a better perspective.

I chair the St. Michael’s Finance Council. I also serve on the Board of Trustees for the Community Legal Aid Society and also assisting the Finance Committee. My involvement also includes the Ohio Bar Foundation, the Siffrin Golf Committee and a number of bar committees.
How did you become involved?
Many of the opportunities arise because organizations need attorneys to provide legal advice for the organization. Our community has a great many of needs. There are many underprivileged and underserved members of the population. Their legal problems keep them apart from their family members and/or cause them to live in fear. Many times, a simple solution is available. The good you can do with relatively little effort is incredible. Most of us are privileged (1) since we possess both God-given ability and commitment

Why did you join the Stark County Bar Association? As a new attorney in the area, the Stark County Bar Association offers many opportunities for me to branch out and meet a diverse group of experienced attorneys and attorneys who have recently passed the Bar. It is especially important for me to get to know the surrounding area and the fi rms that operate in it because I hope to begin and fl ourish in my career in this county. I genuinely believe that this Association will help me reach whatever goals I may set and help build friendships in the community that may last a lifetime.
What practice areas interest you the most? As a graduate from the University of Akron with a degree in mechanical engineering, I have always had a great appreciation towards intellectual property and how businesses are able to protect themselves and their inventions with our patent, trademark, and copyright laws. I hope to focus my practice on patent and trademark prosecution while also helping companies build their intellectual property portfolios in other ways.
Who are some of your heroes in the legal profession? Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall was always someone I looked forward to reading when a decision he wrote was assigned in my law school classes. The decisions he helped craft have had an everlasting impact on our country. Additionally, Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis’ dissenting opinions were always thoughtful and beyond the status quo of the times he lived in.
What was your most rewarding experience during law school? My most rewarding experience during law school was taking classes with Professor Oddi, who was a longtime teacher in intellectual property. His wisdom in the fi eld of intellectual property and pure love for teaching really helped me realize the impact that we can all make in whatever profession we end up in, and his desire to make us the most-informed intellectual property students we could be really opened my eyes to many intricacies of the practice of IP law.

What groups or activities are you involved in outside of work? Outside of the practice of law, I have been getting more involved as an alumni with my undergraduate fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. I also spend time at Feeding Medina County helping put together lunches for less fortunate children. In my spare time, you can fi nd me at UA’s Recreation Center missing layups, going to Cleveland sporting events, and catching up on the latest HBO
shows.
What motto will shape/has shaped your legal career? As many other attorneys would agree, the Golden Rule has had a profound impact on my life. Ever since I was in elementary school, where the quote was emblazoned on the wall in bold font, I have felt a close connection with the actions of others as a result of the actions of myself. I hope to carry on this do-good attitude for the rest of my life and career.
What is your favorite legally-related movie or book? One of my favorite legal-related movies would have to be “Primal Fear,” as it shows you that even the most experienced attorney can make mistakes and never fully understand his or her client.
If you could work for any client today, who would it be and why? I think Elon Musk of Tesla Motors would be a great entrepreneur to work for. His pursuits in the automotive and aeronautical industries, as well as his recent innovations in the energy sector, would really be enjoyable and interesting to work with. He also does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon, so working with him could turn into having a lifelong client and friend.
If you could clerk for any U.S. Supreme Court justice in history, who would it be and why? Although I named a few great Supreme Court justices in a prior question, I think it would be only fi tting to clerk for one that is of this day and age. Therefore, I believe working with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would be truly enlightening as she and I have many similar opinions on matters facing people in this country today. She has not only had a profound impact on the C ourt during her time there, but she has also had a huge cultural impact, becoming known as the “Notorious RBG.”

I considered writing about the relevance of the federal electoral college in the 21st century. After all, our American Bar Association, after due consideration, called for its demise nearly fi fty years ago. But this is December, so bah, humbug on that column.
Happy coming winter solstice, Festivus,
Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, St. Stephen’s Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve to those of you who celebrate one or many of these December holidays and their related customs and rituals. Many involve light to offset our long nights. Some celebrate with special music, food and other nostalgic and heartwarming aspects. You deserve some time with dear ones after another hardworking year. Gifts too.
We will get and give our usual share of legally themed ties, scarves, mugs, books and briefcases. Consider another option.
Viewing or giving fi lms and television shows featuring iconic titles like To Kill A Mockingbird or Perry Mason, or more modern and quirky streaming programs like Better Call Saul or Goliath, can be fun or moving. Great fi lms range from 1928’s The Passion of Joan of Arc through Twelve Angry Men, Inherit the Wind and several others. TV shows run the gamut from Perry Mason to Ally McBeal, Rumpole of the Bailey, and Boston Legal. We all have personal cultural favorites that feature attorneys.
The fi lm And Justice for All featured Al Pacino only several years after The Godfather fi lms were released. I saw it in Spokane, Washington with a group of fellow public defender and prosecutor interns, many from “back East”, while we were in law school. Its intense and gritty portrayal of over the top characters in a corrupt system was entertaining and fun. But we agreed that it was nothing like the new, quiet and modern court rooms and the quiet, trustworthy judges we appeared in and before. Then I returned to Youngstown and clerked in its law department for a while in the
early 80s. Wow. Many of the scenes were acted out yet again, in the ultimate reality show.
Pacino’s fi lm and The Verdict with Paul Newman, about a hard drinking, down on his luck whistleblower taking on a large law fi rm and a diocese over a hospital death, have something in common with each other, and my two favorite Christmas stories. All are ultimately about redemption from darkness to light. We
optimistically hope that we can make a difference in this world, whether large or small. These are the classic themes of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life, two supernatural holiday stories. I was fortunate enough to have portrayed several characters in different versions of A Christmas Carol over many years at the Players Guild, from a younger, skinnier Bob Cratchit to an older, pleasant and portly Fezziwig, to cold, hard Scrooge. I never tired of the message. Scrooge’s nephew cheerfully defended the Christmas holiday as “a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of ...when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely...”
So please continue to open up our hearts over these diverse holidays in whatever way suits you. Perhaps our community service projects, and by making a reservation to attend this year’s Bar Association Holiday Party on December 2nd?
And let’s thank our following legal colleagues for the gift of their many years of legal service to our community. They were recently honored by the Ohio State Bar Association: 50 years – Richard Allerton, John Kurtzman, Thomas Lombardi, Victor Marsh and James Snively.

The Stark County Bar Association is once again sponsoring a Giving Tree through the Community Christmas program. If you haven’t participated in the past, all you need to do is stop by the Bar Office after November 4th and select a tag from the tree. On the tag is the age and sex of the person, clothing size and gift suggestions. When you take a tag you are responsible for purchasing a gift or gifts that meet the criteria on the tag,
with a limit of $25.00 per person. You then return the wrapped gifts to the Bar Office, along with the tag. The gifts are scheduled to be picked up by the Community Christmas program on December 9 th. The program really does make a difference in the lives of children and the elderly who otherwise would not have a “Merry Christmas.”

Family Living Center Clothing Drive The Stark County Bar Association Community
Involvement Committee is sponsoring a clothing drive for the Family Living Center located in Massillon. Last year alone, the Family Living Center provided approximately 8,500 nights of shelter to individuals and families. With the cold weather and holidays approaching, the Community Involvement Committee is reaching out to all Stark County Bar Association members to donate new or gently used socks, hats,
scarves, gloves, coats, and deodorant for children, women and men. These items are much needed as the Family Living Center provides shelter for infants to senior citizens.
Donations may be dropped off at the Bar Office by December 16, 2016. Your generosity will help give homeless families in Stark County hope and warmth this holiday season and is much appreciated.

When you meet some of these people, you realize that in some cases few differences separate your life and theirs. You have benefi ted from a stable family life and the ability to attend both college and graduate school. The inequality of opportunity is sometimes the only difference. You can make life better in
our community one client at a time. For these and other reasons, we have a duty to give to the less fortunate and volunteer our time to assist our local institutions.
What is your time commitment?
You invest as much or as little time as you have available. However, whenever participating in any volunteer capacity, it is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your professionalism and depth of commitment. Therefore, once you commit, it is important to treat these opportunities as you would any other client matter or professional engagement.
What is your advice to other lawyers getting involved?
There are always opportunities; you just have to look for them. The sense of accomplishment and satisfaction will surprise you. Also, serving others is a humbling experience which, at times, puts our own challenges in a better perspective.
In what organizations are you currently involved?
I chair the St. Michael’s Finance Council. I also serve on the Board of Trustees for the Community Legal Aid Society and also assisting the Finance Committee. My involvement also includes the Ohio Bar Foundation, the Siffrin Golf Committee and a number of bar committees.
How did you become involved?
Many of the opportunities arise because organizations need attorneys to provide legal advice for the organization. Our community has a great many of needs. There are many underprivileged and underserved members of the population. Their legal problems keep them apart from their family members and/or cause them to live in fear. Many times, a simple solution is available. The good you can do with relatively little effort is incredible. Most of us are privileged (1) since we possess both God-given ability and commitment

Why did you join the Stark County Bar Association? As a new attorney in the area, the Stark County Bar Association offers many opportunities for me to branch out and meet a diverse group of experienced attorneys and attorneys who have recently passed the Bar. It is especially important for me to get to know the surrounding area and the fi rms that operate in it because I hope to begin and fl ourish in my career in this county. I genuinely believe that this Association will help me reach whatever goals I may set and help build friendships in the community that may last a lifetime.
What practice areas interest you the most? As a graduate from the University of Akron with a degree in mechanical engineering, I have always had a great appreciation towards intellectual property and how businesses are able to protect themselves and their inventions with our patent, trademark, and copyright laws. I hope to focus my practice on patent and trademark prosecution while also helping companies build their intellectual property portfolios in other ways.
Who are some of your heroes in the legal profession? Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall was always someone I looked forward to reading when a decision he wrote was assigned in my law school classes. The decisions he helped craft have had an everlasting impact on our country. Additionally, Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis’ dissenting opinions were always thoughtful and beyond the status quo of the times he lived in.
What was your most rewarding experience during law school? My most rewarding experience during law school was taking classes with Professor Oddi, who was a longtime teacher in intellectual property. His wisdom in the fi eld of intellectual property and pure love for teaching really helped me realize the impact that we can all make in whatever profession we end up in, and his desire to make us the most-informed intellectual property students we could be really opened my eyes to many intricacies of the practice of IP law.

What groups or activities are you involved in outside of work? Outside of the practice of law, I have been getting more involved as an alumni with my undergraduate fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. I also spend time at Feeding Medina County helping put together lunches for less fortunate children. In my spare time, you can fi nd me at UA’s Recreation Center missing layups, going to Cleveland sporting events, and catching up on the latest HBO
shows.
What motto will shape/has shaped your legal career? As many other attorneys would agree, the Golden Rule has had a profound impact on my life. Ever since I was in elementary school, where the quote was emblazoned on the wall in bold font, I have felt a close connection with the actions of others as a result of the actions of myself. I hope to carry on this do-good attitude for the rest of my life and career.
What is your favorite legally-related movie or book? One of my favorite legal-related movies would have to be “Primal Fear,” as it shows you that even the most experienced attorney can make mistakes and never fully understand his or her client.
If you could work for any client today, who would it be and why? I think Elon Musk of Tesla Motors would be a great entrepreneur to work for. His pursuits in the automotive and aeronautical industries, as well as his recent innovations in the energy sector, would really be enjoyable and interesting to work with. He also does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon, so working with him could turn into having a lifelong client and friend.
If you could clerk for any U.S. Supreme Court justice in history, who would it be and why? Although I named a few great Supreme Court justices in a prior question, I think it would be only fi tting to clerk for one that is of this day and age. Therefore, I believe working with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would be truly enlightening as she and I have many similar opinions on matters facing people in this country today. She has not only had a profound impact on the C ourt during her time there, but she has also had a huge cultural impact, becoming known as the “Notorious RBG.”
