A century ago, when Senator James D. Phelan broke ground on this glorious expanse of 175 forested-acres to build his beloved Montalvo, I doubt that he could have imagined the far-reaching impact he would have on the community, the Valley, and the world. As we prepare to celebrate Montalvo’s Centennial year in 2012, we are more deeply appreciative of his legacy and more deeply committed to keeping his dreams alive as stewards of this magnificent property and its relevant and compelling programs. For example, our innovative Arts Education initiatives served 20,000 school children last year, 7,000 of whom are from low-income Title I schools. We offer children’s theatre, Master Classes, and curriculum-based science, literature, and visual arts tours on-site.

This year, The Montalvo Experience can be characterized by the brand new partnerships we have formed to broaden our outreach to the community. We presented summer concerts in the Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre through our association with the Sobrato Arts Foundation for Education and their ARTTEC program, which mentors youth in backstage production in the performing arts. This September, we present the Shakespeare Santa Cruz production of The Comedy of Errors—a new partnership that holds promise to bring Shakespeare back to Montalvo every year. Finally, we introduced summer String Camps for young musicians through our collaboration with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and we partnered with the Museums of Los Gatos to present exhibitions by Claudia Borgna. I am so proud to announce our extraordinary schedule of fall, winter and spring programs! We’re thrilled to present 25 Carriage House Theatre Concerts; the second annual Piano Masters Series, which features artists in classical and jazz, and includes a solo performance by one of this country’s most influential composers, Philip Glass; our Villa Chamber Music Series; and our Family Performing Arts Series. At the heart of all this activity is the buoyant energy and adventurous spirit that emanates from the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program. Over the next few years we will host 27 visual artists from 11 foreign countries as well as more than 100 artists working in a variety of disciplines from California, the United States, and throughout the world. The commitment that these talented artists bring to their work permeates all that we do at Montalvo as we nurture the creative process and give respite from the demands of daily life. Looking ahead, we’ll host our 3rd Annual ARTS SPLASH! Open House and Student Arts Festival in April to kick off Montalvo’s Centennial in 2012. Don’t miss it! We will also present “100 Years, 100 Stories,” an oral history video project; and the Great Gatsby Gala in September! See page 27 for a full Centennial schedule of events. Come and be amazed. Stroll through our magnificent gardens and take a deep breath. Engage in a closer relationship with this dynamic arts institution—and see Senator Phelan’s grand dreams realized for yourself. See you soon,

Angela McConnell,Executive Director

“The very thought of a world-famous composer playing a piano recital of his own

music is mind-boggling... [Glass’ recital] emits the gentle charm of the man

himself, the combination of modesty and self-confidence

that conquers and disarms an audience... People

wandered away, looking as if they had been present at

something important. And of course, they had been.”

— Charleston Post & Courier

PIANOMASTERSSERIES

Philip Glass SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 8PM

$60/$55; Members $54/$50

Philip Glass is widely considered to be one of the most—if not the most—influential composers of the late 20th century. Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times. Glass’ associations, personal and professional, with leading rock, pop and world music artists date back to the 1960s, including the beginning of his collaborative relationship with artist Robert Wilson. Glass is the first composer to win a wide, multi-generational audience in the opera house, the concert hall, the dance world, in film and in popular music—simultaneously. The Daily Telegraph, UK, states, “…what Glass is doing is changing the face of music for our time and all time.”

NEW THIS YEAR: A “Piano Pass” can be purchased for all five Piano Masters Series concerts for $200 for the general public and $190 for members, a savings of up to 15% over single tickets.

The Saint Michael TrioBrahms & Schumann: It’s ComplicatedSUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26

He was brilliant. So was he. And so was she … He was the houseguest who never left … It got convoluted but never tawdry … One of them ends up in the insane asylum … They were discrete, but it’s ALL over their music.

In one of their trademark “informances”, the Saint Michael Trio referees the convoluted relationship between Brahms, his mentor Schumann, and Schumann’s incomparable wife, Clara. In addition to the music, the presentation will feature lively commentary, slides, and demonstrations of the composers’ compositional devices. The Palo Alto Weekly said “The Saint Michael Trio has a passion for divulging interesting details to the audience, using sports metaphors, humor … whatever else helps people understand.”

The Saint Michael Trio will be joined by guest artist Mark McAuliffe (viola) for portions of the program.

Trio VoronezhSUNDAY, MARCH 11, 3PM

“Their technique is flawless in any style, and their sense of rhythm sophisticated and nuanced.” — Portland Oregonian

With Vladimir Volokhin (domra), Sergel Teleshev (bajan), and Valerie Petrukhin (double-bass balalaika), this native Russian folk music band is renowned for its conventional use of Russian musical instruments and folk melodies. The trio’s diverse repertoire ranges from the works of Bach, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky to Russian folk songs, gypsy dance music, and popular songs by Gershwin. This ever-expanding concert material is arranged by the trio’s members and performed with extraordinary virtuosity entirely from memory. Trio Voronezh’s delightful artistic innovation gives them the ability to alter the way audiences experience classical, folk and contemporary music.

Amstel Quartet SUNDAY, APRIL 22, 3PM

Remco Jek, soprano saxophone; Olivier Sliepen, alto saxophone; Bas Apswoude, tenor saxophone;Ties Mellema, baritone saxophone

“The playing by the Amstel Quartet is nothing short of astounding. Not only are they a brilliant group of individual musicians, they are a brilliant ensemble.” — Fanfare Magazine

Winner of the 2006 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the Amstel Quartet’s performances are riveting, filled with high energy, emotion and infectious dynamism. From the mystery of Bach’s “Second Cello Suite in D” to Michael Nyman’s music for the film The Piano, the four saxophonists unleash a palpable collective energy and win fans with each performance. Composers such as György Ligeti, Tan Dun, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman and Arvo Pärt have nothing but praise for the ingenious adaptations written by members of the Quartet. The Quartet’s latest CD, Amstel Peijl, was released on the CAG Records label in 2008, featuring landmark saxophone quartets by Glass and Glazunov and an arrangement of a Fauré quintet with pianist Wijnand van Klaveren.

Coulter/Phillips EnsembleSUNDAY, MAY 6, 3PM

The Coulter/Phillips Trio, an instrumental ensemble from Santa Cruz, performs traditional folk music from the Celtic, Scandinavian and American traditions. The core group, William Coulter and Barry and Shelley Phillips, attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music together where they received Master of Music degrees. Their music ranges from poignant slow airs to rip roaring jigs and reels to contemplative Shaker hymns. Formed in 1983, the group released their first album, Orison, in 1985, and went on to release more than 20 more albums with Gourd Music, a local independent label. The group has performed in Ireland, Taiwan, Germany and all over the US.2011-12 VILLA CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES

SALLY & DON LUCAS ARTISTS RESIDENCY PROGRAMSince 1939, Montalvo has been home to an international

multidisciplinary artists’ residency through the support of

the Montalvo Association. In 2004, the residency moved to

the new Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program

campus, which provided a state-of-the-art facility, designed

by six teams of architects and artists. Ten architecturally

distinctive live/work studios and the Knight Ridder

Commons building offer an environment conducive to both

individual practice and the energetic exchange of ideas

among international and culturally diverse Fellows.

The Lucas Program, the oldest residency program west of the Mississippi and the third oldest in the U.S, has gained worldwide stature as a model of curatorial practice leading to the support of new and challenging work in the field of contemporary art. The Program has taken Montalvo to new levels of excellence and international recognition, having hosted 332 accomplished artists from 36 countries. Approximately 25% of the artists that Montalvo serves each year are from California. Resident artists are selected through a rigorous, discipline specific nomination process and are then juried by arts professionals in their respective fields. Each year, a few artists are selected to receive a curatorial invitation to the residency.

The Lucas Program was the first (and for many years the only) artists’ residency in the United States to offer a one-year Culinary Fellowship residency; this Culinary Fellowship has served as a model for other programs that now offer a similar residency. To date, Montalvo has nurtured the talents of seven accomplished chefs.

Montalvo encourages all artists-in-residence to respond to the 175 acres surrounding the Lucas Artists Residency Program; the responses may materialize as site-specific works of art or public engagements; artists are also encouraged to propose programs for a Final Friday event, education outreach in the community, or in new ways to be determined.

The programs of the Lucas Artists Residency are made possible, in part, by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Endowment, an advised fund of Silicon Valley Community Foundation; the National Endowment for the Arts; David and Lucile Packard Foundation; and Applied Materials. With the support of generous grants from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and a partnership grant between The James Irvine Foundation and the Alliance of Artists Communities, the Lucas Artists Residency Program is committed to encouraging the work of artists within the state of California.

SALLY & DON LUCAS ARTISTS RESIDENCY PROGRAM

I will remember the people and the possibilities. I once again experienced the power of food to bring people together and connect them to the land and each other. I am leaving with such a deep love and value of artists and their contributions to this world. Also, for those who spend their time, careers and money to support artists—what amazing dedication and love!” Michelle FuerstCulinary Fellow, 2010Princeton, New Jersey

[The residency] not only helped me to withdraw myself from the city living chaos in order to focus my energy, but also made my physical and mental health better. As a composer, a healthy body and a clear mind are essential to my creativity, especially in turning ideas to results. I was able to concentrate and let all kinds of inspiration to come to me. Wu FeiMusic Fellow, June-May 2011Beijing, China

I think residencies offer a new experience for mid-career artists who might be getting set in their ways and who can use a new place and new associates in order to shake them up a bit. Also, the fact that I had a big project to work on and deadlines to meet—it was a great opportunity to get more work done than I normally would have, due to the intensity of the solitary time. Sandow BirkVisual Arts Fellow,December 2010 – February 2011Long Beach, California

The residency gave me an opportunity to reflect on my practice in a way unique to the situation. I could collect together ideas that had been floating around for some time and experiment with them. Without the time and context that the residency provided, such ideas may well have taken a different path and certainly wouldn’t have come to fruition as they did. Richard T. WalkerMedia Artist, Irvine Fellow, June 2011San Francisco, California

[I] enjoyed the new location and the fresh start in light filled surroundings. Very new to me was the experience of creating in such a quiet, natural environment…it made me aware of how much the environment can affect and therefore, how much energy goes into creating a “safe” workplace, to block out disturbances.Above: Seeing Light, 2010 Nicole SchmölzerVisual Artist, January-April 2010Pratteln, Switzerland

The residency was such a gift. As a mother of two children, finding time and space for my work is so challenging. I was able to feel my own skin again. I was able to hear myself think. I was able to reside more in a place of unknowing about the creative process, which was a real break-through. I was able to discover a deeper voice. Traces, Twigs and TimeON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 30, 2011

Open Daily, FREE to the PublicMontalvo Arts Center Grounds

The 2011 Sculpture on the Grounds exhibition invited Lucas Residency Program artists-in-residence and local artists to explore the possibilities of outdoor public sculpture, experimenting with new materials and methods, including temporality, participatory art forms, creative ecological solutions, architecture, design and media. Montalvo is uniquely positioned to establish its grounds as a laboratory for public art and audience engagement by allowing artists access to the 175 acre park, which ranges in character from densely forested areas traversed by creeks and hiking trails to formal gardens and a sprawling front lawn at the base of the historic Villa. The dynamic artists featured in this exhibition include Cameron Hockenson, Seyed Alavi, Presley Martin, Ali Naschke-Messing, Julie Jacobson, SonicSENSE and Sudhu Tewari of UCSC’s Openlab.

IMAGINE PEACE Wish Tree by Yoko OnoAPRIL 17 – OCTOBER 30, 2011

Open Daily, FREE to the PublicFront Lawn

For Traces, Twigs and Time, Montalvo included internationally recognized conceptual artist Yoko Ono’s IMAGINE PEACE Wish Tree, which is a part of her interactive long-term artwork WISH TREE (1981). The piece has been integral to many of her exhibitions in museums and cultural centers around the world where people have been invited to write their personal wishes for peace on simple white tags and tie them to a tree branch. Montalvo installed the artwork on a large evergreen on the front lawn for the ARTSPLASH Open House in April and issued an open invitation to the community to participate and create an IMAGINE PEACE Wish Tree. When the work is removed in October, the wish tags will be sent to the site of Ono’s IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Sculpture on the Grounds was first introduced at Montalvo in 2002 as a way to activate the grounds with community

participation, and showcase the works of significant visual artists. Re-launched last summer after a hiatus of

several years, the 2011 exhibition features work by both local artists and Lucas Artists Residency Fellows, who

were provided an opportunity to enliven the grounds with works that challenged their own artistic practice.

OUTSIDE: The Work of Claudia BorgnaSEPTEMBER 30 – NOVEMBER 13

Open Daily, FREE to the PublicMontalvo Arts Center Grounds

Montalvo Arts Center and The Museums of Los Gatos have partnered to present Inside and Outside: The Work of Claudia Borgna. The two-part exhibition will be on view at both the Museums and at Montalvo. With cases of recycled plastic bags in tow, Borgna has lead a semi-nomadic life traveling the world and examining the relationship between nature and the manmade world through her work. Her site-specific installations explore how the “plastic” and the natural realms interact with one another and create new ephemeral orders. As part of Traces, Twigs and Time, Borgna will be in residence at the Lucas Residency Program and will respond to Montalvo’s grounds by creating an installation using thousands of plastic bags in what she refers to as the “evolution of landscape.” Borgna has exhibited throughout Europe, Mexico and the USA. She is the recipient of grants from both the Joan Mitchell and the Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner Foundations and was awarded the Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary Award as well as the Pritzker Foundation Endowed Fellowship Award.

Conference of the Birds UnfeatheredHaleh Abghari (voice); Laurie San Martin (composer);Chris Froh (percussion) with Dana Harel (set design) FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 8PM

Carriage House Theatre Tickets: $20 General / $15 Members / $8 Students Laurie San Martin and Haleh Abghari are joined by percussionist Chris Froh to present a new work inspired by Farid al-Din Attar’s 12th century poem, “The Conference of the Birds.” Abghari and San Martin began collaborating on this project while in residence at the Lucas Artists Program, where they met visual artist Dana Harel. This new musical and theatrical form of storytelling for voice, percussion and computer-processed sounds draws on Korean pansori and Iranian traditional music, as well as bird songs and Western classical music. The story follows a group of birds that venture through extreme challenges to find a leader. Aspects of the original story are woven together with other stories in a satirical and dramatic performance. Photo, Haleh Abghari: Jill Steinberg

Beth Custer Ensemble presentsMy Grandmother FRIDAY, MAY 25, 8:30PM

Lilian Fontaine Garden TheaterTickets: $20 General / $15 Members / $8 Students

My Grandmother is a silent film made in 1929 by Soviet Georgian director Kote Mikaberidze and banned by the Soviet regime for 40 years. Beth Custer has coupled this amazing film with her own score, a quick-paced pastiche of American jazz and blues, contemporary classical, and world folk music. Forgotten for a half-century, Kote Mikaberidze’s film is a delightful example of the Soviet Eccentric Cinema movement as well as an irreverent satire of the then still-young Soviet State system. Noted for its anarchic styles—which include stop-motion, puppetry, exaggerated camera angles, animation and constructivist sets—the film unspools the foibles and follies that abound when a Georgian paper pusher, modeled after American silent comic Harold Lloyd, loses his job.

The Beth Custer Ensemble features guitarist David James (The Coup, Spearhead), drummer Jan Jackson, Will Bernard (Motherbug), bassist Mark Calderon (The Meters) with special guests trumpeter Chris Grady (Tom Waits) on trumpet and percussion, Jessica Ivry on cello (Real Vocal String Quartet), and Dina Maccabee on violin (Vienna Teng). Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) narrates the film’s intertitles.

NEWDIRECTIONS

Throughout the 2011-2012 program season, Montalvo will continue a

series of performance works that will explore new directions in dance,

music, performing arts and drama. Organized by Kelly Sicat, Director,

Lucas Artists Residency Program, this series features the work of former

residency Fellows and other selected artists; additional performances to

be announced.

Natural and Creative Capital Fall of 2011 will conclude our 18-month investigation into issues of the sustainability of our natural and creative environments in a formal way, however the quest for sustainability will lead Montalvo into its next century—as we continue to grow and nurture our natural and creative capital.

Records and Marks ON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 16, 2011

Scientists and artists alike are fascinated with mapping both natural and manmade phenomena, from landscapes to highways to towns, from human behaviors to digital data. Maps provide navigation systems and access to places unknown. As part of Natural and Creative Capital, a review of the current recordings of humanity and human nature seemed in order. More and more frequently, it is our artists that are being called upon to assist in visualizing and interpreting information. Artists Lordy Rodriguez, Adriane Colburn, Alexander Chen, Amanda Hughen and Ehren Reed present their works of mapping developed from their own personal introspection into geography and identity, ranging from a delicate interpretation of city infrastructure to a sound composition and data visualization based upon the New York City subway systems. Employing the tools of cartography, these artists allow visitors to explore the peaks and valleys in which a creative mind travels the imagination to interpret reality.

Soil to Site OCTOBER 28 – JANUARY 15, 2012

Opening Reception: Friday, October 28, 7pm As a conclusion to Natural and Creative Capital, Soil to Site provides a contemplative look at the relationship of culture and nature. Throughout history artists have chosen natural spaces as their subject matter and now more than ever it seems these relationships are complicated with concerns for the sustainability of place, the permanence of humanity and our own interconnection to the vast world. It is through the reflections of video artist Richard T. Walker and the collection of Bay Area artist, Mari Andrews, that the viewer will ponder their very own relationship to the world around them, and to what we hold dear and what we disregard.

Reflections from a Century!JANUARY 27, 2012 – APRIL 22, 2012

Opening Reception: Friday, January 27, 2012, 7pm

Montalvo is turning 100! The historic Villa and the estate will mark its Centennial year in 2012. It was Montalvo that California’s first democratically elected Senator, James Duval Phelan, called home. It was Montalvo where Phelan entertained artists, politicians, soldiers, scholars and cultural figures throughout his life (1912 – 1930). Through an interactive timeline, this exhibition will explore one hundred years of Montalvo history, beginning with it’s founder and following the numerous ways in which his bequest and legacy have been instrumental in establishing Montalvo’s venerable position in the cultural landscape of Silicon Valley and beyond.

Glenn Roven’s Runaway BunnyPerformed by the Saint Michael TrioSATURDAY, APRIL 14, 11AM

$20 adult/$10 child | Members: $16 adult/$8 child

The Runaway Bunny, by Margaret Wise Brown, is one of the most beloved and best-selling children’s books of all time. It is the story of a small bunny rabbit who wants to run away, but his mother always tells him “if you run away, I will run after you,“ because she loves her baby bunny. The book has been in print for 60 years, and has been translated into 23 languages, including Japanese, Chinese, and Hebrew. Four-time Emmy award-winning composer Glen Roven originally set his musical adaptation of the book as a concert piece for violin, narrator and orchestra. Now he has reworked it for piano trio for an exclusive Montalvo premiere, featuring the Saint Michael Trio. The music has a fresh, contemporary feeling to it, and the narration makes it especially accessible to children!

In 2012 the Villa at Montalvo Arts Center turns 100 years old! Built by Senator James D. Phelan, California’s first democratically elected Senator, his beloved estate in Saratoga has evolved into one of the Bay Area’s leading arts institutions and artist residency programs. It was at Montalvo where Phelan entertained artists, politicians, soldiers, scholars and cultural figures until his death in 1930, at which time he bequeathed the estate to the state of California with a very specific mandate:

“I would like the property at Saratoga, California…to be maintained as a public park open under reasonable restrictions, the buildings and grounds immediately surrounding the same to be used as far as possible for the development of art, literature, music, and architecture by promising students.”

Montalvo has kept Senator Phelan’s legacy alive for all these years through the hard work and dedication of countless people who have supported the institution and the artists it serves with their time, creativity and financial resources, all in recognition of the deep importance of the arts and nature in our everyday lives.

Historically known as Villa Montalvo, Montalvo Arts Center is located on the 175-acre summer estate built in 1912 by James Duval Phelan (1861-1930). Phelan, a passionate Californian who had been a three-term progressive mayor of San Francisco, went on to become California’s first popularly-elected U.S. Senator. Villa Montalvo, an elegantly appointed Mediterranean-style house, was Senator Phelan’s favorite home and a vital center of artistic, political and social life in Northern California.

After a thorough search and ultimate purchase of the land on which to build his country estate, Senator Phelan commissioned William Curlett, a prominent San Francisco architect to build Villa Montalvo, based on Phelan’s own preferences for early California design and elegant materials, such as the 16th century carved wooden doors from Granada, Spain that serve as the main entrance to the building. Phelan also brought an artisan from Italy to create the beautiful woodwork that can be seen throughout the living quarters. A

second architect, Charles E. Gottschalk, completed work on the house when William Curlett fell ill. The Senator moved into his beloved country home in October of 1912. Today, the Villa at Montalvo is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.

For more than 75 years, Montalvo Arts Center has served the South Bay as a center of creativity through a wide range of exceptional opportunities for involvement with the arts to diverse audiences. Ranging from the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program (see page 14), the performing arts series for adults and children, visual arts programs and exhibitions, literary events, and arts education programs, Montalvo successfully connects the larger national and international arena of exemplary artistic talent with the South Bay community. In its role as a contemporary arts center, Montalvo fosters creativity, nurtures new talent and spurs active engagement with the arts through commissions of new work, presentation of acclaimed and emerging artistic talent, and arts education initiatives. Relevance to the community is key.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MONTALVOMontalvo Arts Center’s mission is to create and present arts of all types, nurture artists, and use our historic Villa,

buildings, and grounds in innovative ways that engage people in the creative process.
