LAND OF SONG

In partnership with The Aloud Charity

Thousands of schoolchildren from across Wales will gather for a gloriumptious adventure that celebrates the life of Roald Dahl.In association with the Roald Dahl Estate and CânSing, we’ve collaborated with The Aloud Charity to create a new bilingual website which includes free singing resources for key stage 2 pupils across Wales. Visit the website to find out more and register at: www.landofsong.wales

Aimed at promoting singing and the teaching of singing in primary schools across the country, participating schools will learn up to ten Roald Dahl inspired songs before the project culminates in a series of free bilingual school concerts on Monday 6 June 2016 at Venue Cymru, Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Wales Millennium Centre.

With celebrity narrations of some of Dahl’s most famous stories intertwined with songs from his associated works, these fully interactive concerts will be a real treat!

Participating schools can reserve tickets for the final concerts through their chosen venue. Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis –

CITY OF THE UNEXPECTED17 & 18 September ’16In partnership with National Theatre Wales

Imagine a city transformed and seen through the eyes of Roald Dahl. Inspired by Dahl’s magical, transformative imagination, Cardiff will become a place where reality will cease to behave as one would expect, and where the laws of physics, logic and the predictable will give way to the laws of the imagination and the unexpected.

Dahl’s imagination has touched generations; part of growing up, part of bed times, childhoods, relationships and development of imaginations. So it is fitting that this weekend celebration will involve one of the most ambitious mobilisations of the inhabitants of a city ever attempted, together transforming it into a place that will unlock the child in everyone and create a city of wonder and surprise.

Featuring extraordinary designs and a cast of over 10,000 people led by a creative team from around the world, City of the Unexpected will include large-scale staged set pieces as well as flash mobs and the cast hidden across the city, waiting to intervene on reality in the most unexpected of ways.

It will take place in Cardiff’s streets and public spaces, shops and arcades, iconic buildings, public institutions and parks and everyone can be part of this extraordinary weekend.

City of the Unexpected is made possible thanks to:

We would also like to thank our other City of the Unexpected supporters for their generosity.

DREAM JARSLiteracy / ArtWhat is the worst, most frightsome nightmare you can imagine? What is the most squiffling, dory-hunky dream you can conjure?Dreams and nightmares will pop up in the most unlikely of places when we share the dreams of a nation as part of City of the Unexpected. Make a dream jar to contain your trogglehumper or phizzwizard. Trap all manner of horrible monsters inside it or stuff it full of joyful wonderment.

Read the chapter called “Dreams” in The BFG.Encourage pupils to explore their imagination and tell a story in their jar - with miniature people, toys, photographs or any small objects that represent their bottled dream.

Ask them to write a label describing the dream for the BFG to read. Write it in the style of his labels: remember the BFG has only read one book by ‘Dahl’s Chickens’; he gets very confused, speaks in Gobblefunk and is bad at spelling and grammar.

This is a great literacy exercise as pupils must first write the label correctly before translating it into the BFG’s language.

Music TechnologyWhat does a dream sound like?As we all know “every dream in the world is making a different sort of buzzy-hum music”.Help us create a dream soundscape for City of the Unexpected. Experiment with noise, sound, music, or all three.

Encourage your pupils to think about sound and music in unexpected ways: muffled noises, creaking doors and floor boards, water sounds, animal sounds, crumpling empty boxes, tapping metal objects, recordings of traffic or wind. You can choose to make the sounds of a Hideous Trogglehumper, or the sounds of A Squiffling Phizzwizard.

Email us your creations and your sounds will bring the dream jars to life during the City of the Unexpected weekend.

information:• You can source your own plastic jars / bottles / water dispenser bottles / clear plastic storage boxes or plastic

sweet jars can be provided on request. Email [email protected] with the following information – o number of jars required o school name and full addresso contact teacher name

• Youwillneedtogetyourfinisheddreamjarstousby6Augustatthefollowinglocations–o Wales Millennium Centre (anytime during opening)o Urdd National Eisteddfod, Flintshire (30 May to 4 June)o Aberystwyth Arts Centre (6 June) o Venue Cymru (6 June)o National Eisteddfod, Abergavenny (29 July to 6 August)

• Due to the volume of jars we will not be able to return them so please do not use anything pupils would like to keep • Email us your soundscapes as a sound file attachment by 15 July (we might need some time to contact you

before the end of term if we struggle accessing them!). Soundscapes should be no longer than 30 seconds and include the word Trogglehumper of Phizzwizard in the mp3 title.

• With all submissions let us know your name, contact details, school name and address so we can see where the dreams are coming from

• You can choose to do just the Literacy/Art elements of the project, just the Music Technology element or both• We’d encourage you to adapt this stimulus to suit the needs of your pupils and therefore encourage children of

any age to take part

Remember to make the label waterproof – you can either put it on the inside or laminate it, or do something extraordinarily unexpected we haven’t thought of, like write with latex.

MINISTRY OF MISCHIEFHelp our ministry cause a little mischief during City of the Unexpected! In the lead up to the festival, we’ll be working with young people including Valleys Kids, Grassroots and others to share Roald Dahl inspired ideas whilst developing and exploring digital skills. During the summer term, we’d like to invite primary, secondary and special schools across Wales to become advisory committees to the ministry. Working with Big Learning Company, the ministry will set a series of Digital and STEAM linked challenges over the summer term. Young people from all key stages will be welcome to take part.

To register your interest in Ministry of Mischief, email the following details to: [email protected]

• Name of school• Address of school• Contact teacher name and position• Number of children in your school ministry / advisory group• Yeargroupofparticipatingpupils

Then simply wait for the Ministry to get in touch in April!
