Welcome to Austin!Our Capital City is a very

special place indeed! For 30 years now, we’ve been

celebrating all that makes Austin unique and weird. When Celebrate Austin first pub-lished in 1980, Austin was still driven at the heart by music. Musicians like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Stevie Nicks and Willie Nelson made the downtown scene their playground and laid the foundation for the city that would go on to be dubbed “The Live Music Capi-tal of the World.” In 1980, The Continental Club had been open in Austin for over 20 years, President Reagan took office over President Carter, Blondie was Number 1 on the Billboard Charts and everyone loved the number one television program Dallas. Downtown Austin, about 345,890 people lived in the urban area that we have come to know and love so well.

30 years later, life in the Capital City is not so different. We’ve more than doubled in size and residents, but Austin is still driven by music. Austin, especially through its cen-tral music scene on 6th Street, Red River and throughout its downtown corridors, has thoroughly earned its nickname. Austin is home to South by Southwest, one of the largest annual music festivals in the U.S. Also found here is the locally hosted Austin

City Limits Festival, as well as music and shows every night of the week.

There is so much more to love about our great Capital City. This issue we are cele-brating “Where the Locals Go.” Slogans like “Keep Austin Weird” truly express the indi-viduality of this city and the locals are the beating heart of our urban community that encourages self-expression. As a visitor, how would some-one characterize Austin? For that matter, how would a local characterize Austin?

What is there to do, what does it have to offer, and how do these things make it unique? The real question is where to begin.

Start with the biggest ingredient – literally – the capitol city is home to the largest state capitol building in the United States, a feat of architec-ture that brings to life Texas’ proud and independent history. Add to that Austin’s unique politics; long known as a single blue dot in a sea of red, Austin’s colorful political views reflect the extreme diversity of the city. Stir in a rich, deep-rooted musical history, a significant selection of art houses and museums, and a generous handful of locally owned and revered restaurants and businesses. Top it off with the pic-turesque and culturally rich Hill Coun-try that surrounds the city, and you’ve started to create the melting pot that is Austin.

The people of Austin thrive in this self-styled environment. The temper-ate weather encourages outdoor ac-tivity, and the folks make good use of the multiple outlets in which to hike, bike, walk, run, or swim. The art and music scene is a living, breathing thing in Austin, and you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting someone of such persuasion. Hippies and hipsters alike bump elbows with the forces of gen-trification without sacrificing their soul. Ask anyone on the street and they’ll tell you – Austin is proud of its eclectic heritage and fiercely protective of its free-thinking, liberal spirit.

So where do we end up? Visitors come for the beautiful environment and the interesting tourist attractions. They stick around because of the in-fectiously positive vibe. And in the end, they get carried away with the thrum of Austin’s lifestyle until finally they re-alize – they’re not a tourist at all, but instead another piece of what makes Austin unique in the first place. n

Austin is a city defined by its cre-ative heart, individual soul and eccentric spirit. Its inhabitants are at its expressive and ever-evolv-

ing core, and they wear “weird” as a proud badge of their citizenship. The city and its people exist in a symbiotic relationship, each thriving off the creative energy of the other. Austin has an inspirational vibe that is fueled by the enthusiasm of its people, who are notorious for their active lifestyles, free thinking and love of all things art and media. No wonder, then, that Austin’s visi-tors are eager to take part in its culture and bring back a part of that unique atmosphere to relive and reflect upon, at home.

Arguably the artistic epicenter of Austin, downtown is alive with the spirit of creation. It is known for its pervasive music scene, diverse performing arts venues and, of course, its eclectic offering of visual arts. From Sixth Street to the Warehouse Dis-

trict, South Congress to The Drag, the streets of downtown are a hive of activity for the visual arts, be it painting, glass, sculpture- even those Austin originals that defy the traditional classifications of artistic media.

Art is everywhere you look, so if you’re in the market to take home a little slice of Austin life, your search will not be a difficult one. The diversity that personifies Aus-

tin is reflected in the sheer scope of selection to be had. The streets of down-town offer every genre of art for purchase, in any imaginable setting. Large selections

of fine contemporary art hang quietly in peaceful and austere museum-quality set-tings. Roomfuls of unique sculptures and glasswork are tucked carefully away in tiny antique houses turned galleries. Austin’s offerings also run the gamut of Texas art, whether it’s quirky cowboy-kitsch or sweep-ing Southwestern-style murals.

In addition to the galleries and museums peppering the downtown and hill country scene, there are numerous festivals and exhibitions throughout the year to expand buying opportunities. One of the highlights includes Art City Austin, occurring over the last weekend in April 2010. Each year, hun-dreds of emerging and independent artists spread themselves out over the rolling hills and streets surrounding Austin City Hall to sell their creations to thousands of eager art enthusiasts.

For even more of the flavor of Austin, head down to 6th Street in either May or September for the bi-annual Old Pecan Street Arts Festival, a 30-year Austin tradi-tion. The Pecan Street Festival is a smor-gasbord of local music, food and arts & crafts.

Visitors arriving in Austin early in the month can catch First Thursday on South Congress. Affectionately referred to as SoCo, this hip, bohemian section of down-town plays host to a wide variety of events and activities, including arts & crafts ven-dors, street performers and plenty of peo-ple watching. Local stores keep their doors open until 10 p.m. or later, and welcome you in with a cold beer and a smile. n

Austin has long been known for its eclectic offering of dining destinations, rang-ing from the expected (Tex-

Mex, BBq – some of the best in the world!) to the more worldly or even completely unexpected (ever been served a humongous cupcake out of a 1960’s Airstream?). One perk of grub-bing in this wickedly weird city is the privilege of dressing to suit your own style when hitting the town. Going ca-sual is an unspoken rule in Austin, and to dress down is to look like a local.

One of the rare occasions in which an Austinite trades in the cargos for a pair of slacks is the opportunity to sit down at one of the city’s many fine dining establishments. It might not be the first thing you think of when visiting this fair city, but make no mistake that Austin has become a culinary epicenter for prestigious up-and-coming chefs and both nationally known and self-proclaimed foodies. From succulent, tender Texas beef to fresh seafood flown in from the Gulf and beyond to delicate, handmade pastas, Austin has a world of haute cuisine at its fingertips to satisfy even the most discriminating gastronome.

As is expected in a city so dependent on its local businesses, the number of family- and privately owned upscale restaurants at least equal the number of the finer chain establishments. Downtown institutions such as the Culinary Academy of Austin and Le Cordon Bleu continually infuse new talent into the marketplace, keeping Austin relevant in the ever-evolving world of epicurean excellence.

Historic Sixth Street

Sixth Street is the city of Austin’s eclectic and famous roads, well-known for its fun, boisterous night life and live music scene. What many people do not know is that Sixth Street is also one of the most historic districts in town and contains a large range of unique retail, restaurant and entertainment venues that are pedestrian friendly during the daytime as well as the nighttime. Before Sixth Street became the bustling urban center that it is now, it was once called Pecan Street, and was the main thoroughfare into town (a nice flat trail) for the farmland communities to the east, and soon became a major commerce district. By the 1860s, log and frame houses, wagon yards, livery stables, and saloons were present along Pecan Street, as were pigs and cows from time to time. What is now modern day Buffalo Billiards was once Missouri House, erected in 1861, and was Austin’s first boarding home for weary travelers on their way to the Wild West. The beautiful Littlefield Building, at the northeast corner of Sixth and Congress, was built in 1910 and displays the beautiful architecture know as Beaux Arts Style. At the time of it’s completion, it was undeniably the most modern and opulent building in the southwest part of the nation. This building was the tallest skyscraper between New Orleans and San Francisco at the time (be sure to ask on the local shop owners about the fun rivalry that added a ninth floor to this impressive building). Located within Littlefield, in modern day Austin, is Hatbox, a haberdashery that com-bines old world charm with contemporary style, and is well-recognized for being “every man and woman’s” hat store. Right next store is the beloved Wild About Music store, the worlds first and only art and gift gallery dedicated entirely to music. This unique retail treasure represents over 100 locals, national and international artists and carries thou-sands of items all entirely dedicated to music. No trip to

Right across the street is Bobalu Cigar Co., which proudly presents fine boutique cigars made live in the window by real Cuban born cigar rollers. This locally renowned shop also carries a fantastic selection of cases and accessories. Although historical Sixth Street is extraordinarily pedes-trian friendly, don’t miss out on your chance to tour Austin in the most fun way possible at Segway Tours, located near Bobalu Cigar Co. The tours take you from Sixth Street to the State Capitol and you will be amazed at what you’ll learn! On a hot Summer afternoon, don’t forget the opportunity to step inside the crisp air conditioned interior of Alamo Drafthouse, which plays movies in the early afternoon and into the evening, and features continually evolving special events and fun features. The food is amazing, the atmo-sphere is fun and refreshing, and you’ll be amazed at the authentic and original old movie interior, which was one known as The Ritz. After all this shopping, touring and fun, don’t forget to stop at any of the world famous bars or restaurants that line Sixth Street. Maggie Mae’s Austin has stood proud for over thirty years and is located in a beautifully restored building erected in 1874 and features an authentic New Orleans style courtyard with a staircase that extends to a rooftop that allows for a gorgeous view of downtown Austin. Right across the street is Iron Cac-tus Restaurant and Margarita Bar, which is located in an enchanting turn-of-the-century building which was remodeled as recently as 1995 to maintain the authentic, historical aspects of its construction that make Sixth Street so charming. There are countless hidden trea-sures along this wonderful corridor that makes up the heart of Austin. You might have heard a little something here or there about the music scene in Austin. Chances are, if

you aren’t in town for business, your trip has something to do with one of our famous music festivals. If not, you can be fairly certain that the mu-sic will touch your visit in some form or fashion while you’re here. Wander the streets of downtown during the day, and you will likely encounter bands unloading equipment for a gig or rehearsing in garages cubbied between old stone buildings. As the evenings descend, the city comes alive and the music takes over, buoying its inhabitants on sweet gui-tar riffs. Imbued as it is in Austin’s history, music leaves an indelible mark on today’s culture – one that bleeds into the streets of the city and hearts of the people. Austin’s great musical heritage is not a tale told by museum portraits or untouchable ar-tifacts. It lives in the landmark per-formance venues that gave the city and the musicians a name; it haunts the nighttime establishments packed throughout downtown. From legend-

ary artists like Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan who got their start back in the early Austin scene, to relatively new or up-and-coming musicians, the spirit of music is a continuous presence in all aspects of life here. It is this deep dedication that has gained Austin the worthy title of “Live Music Capital of the World.”

Austin’s inherited namesake is supremely invoked during any one of its yearly music festivals, includ-ing South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and Fun Fun Fun. Lasting anywhere from a couple of days to an entire week, thousands of music makers and lovers alike flock to the streets of downtown for nonstop au-ral stimulation and other forms of rev-elry. The excitement often lasts long into the night, spilling over into the numerous bars, clubs and lounges of Austin in the form of after-parties and impromptu jam sessions.

The best aspect of Austin night-life is that there is always something happening. In any given night you can find a wide variety of energetic live music shows, bumping night

clubs and cool cocktail lounges. The most popular is Sixth Street where venues range from cozy pubs to raucous dance clubs, music from raw alternative rock to sweet, soul-ful blues. Want to hang like a local? Head over to the Red River district to hear the best indie band you’ve never heard of.

For a slightly slower paced, more sophisticated environment, head a couple of blocks over to the Ware-house District. Spanning along Fourth Street from Guadalupe to Congress, you’ll find a vibrant yet still laid-back selection of cocktail lounges, wine bars and tap houses. Looking for ultra hip? Check out SoCo, an eight-block strip of South Congress that nurtures and fosters the funky little bohemian spirit in ev-ery Austinite. Whatever you’re doing for the evening in Austin, get into the vibe and find some great music. Just duck into the nearest dive – you might very well discover the next big act coming out of Austin… or is that the phantom wail of Janis echoing off those weathered walls? n

ible on those rare occasions when the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) lowers the lake for repairs to the dam and boat docks.

The first city officials were elected in 1907 when a mayor-alderman form of government was instituted. In 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Crosby Harwood was elected mayor - thus becoming the first woman mayor in the United States to be elected by an all male electorate.

However, it was the 866-foot stone monolith called Granite Mountain loom-ing on the town’s western edge that se-cured Marble Falls’ place in Texas his-tory. It was here that the famed “Texas Pink” granite was quarried to construct the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin. The stone was a donation from progres-sive area citizens in exchange for a rail connection with Austin. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad built an extension to Marble Falls from Granite Mountain in 1889, and a post office was also estab-lished that year. Granite Mountain is still actively quarried, and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world.

Today, it is the natural setting of lakes and hills that makes the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ area one of the most attrac-tive and popular tourist and retirement destinations in all of Texas. When explor-

Be Sure to See:HARDIN-USSERY HOUSE: 700 Main Street. This grand two-story house was constructed in 1892, and served as a private residence until 1993. It has undergone restoration and now houses a shop offering gifts and collectibles.

BRANDT BADGER HOUSE: South Fourth Street, between Avenue M and N Streets. Built in 1888 with stones from Granite Mountain that were cut from the quarry rubble remaining after the shaping of the blocks used in the state capitol.

LIBERTY HALL: 119 Avenue G. Adam G. Johnson’s home, an elegant, three-story 1887 mansion.The 7,000-square-foot house faces south, which provided the Johnsons with a spectacular view of the waterfalls that gave the town its name.

MARBLE FALLS ALLIANCE UNIVERSITY: 2001 Broadway. Part of Adam Johnson’s master plan for Marble Falls included a university.

MARBLE FALLS FACTORY SITE: This site is on US 281, just north of the Colorado River Bridge on Lake Marble Falls.

POST OFFICE BUILDING: 115 Main Street. The original Marble Falls Post Office was established in 1884, and was located on the south side of the Colorado River. This building was constructed in 1910.

THE ROPER HOUSE: 707 Third Street at US 281. George C. and Elizabeth Roper constructed this double galleried hotel building around 1888. n
