Welcome to Austin! Our Capital City is a very

special place indeed! For 30 years now, we’ve been

celebrating all that makes Austin unique and weird. When Celebrate Austin first pub-lished in 1980, Austin was still driven at the heart by music. Musicians like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Stevie Nicks and Willie Nelson made the downtown scene their playground and laid the foundation for the city that would go on to be dubbed “The Live Music Capi-tal of the World.” In 1980, The Continental Club had been open in Austin for over 20 years, President Reagan took office over President Carter, Blondie was Number 1 on the Billboard Charts and everyone loved the number one television program Dallas. Downtown Austin, about 345,890 people lived in the urban area that we have come to know and love so well.

30 years later, life in the Capital City is not so different. We’ve more than doubled in size and residents, but Austin is still driven by music. Austin, especially through its cen-tral music scene on 6th Street, Red River and throughout its downtown corridors, has thoroughly earned its nickname. Austin is home to South by Southwest, one of the largest annual music festivals in the U.S. Also found here is the locally hosted Austin

City Limits Festival, as well as music and shows every night of the week.

There is so much more to love about our great Capital City. This issue we are cele-brating “Where the Locals Go.” Slogans like “Keep Austin Weird” truly express the indi-viduality of this city and the locals are the beating heart of our urban community that encourages self-expression. As you look through Celebrate Austin, take note of our local vendors, advertisers and participants. Each invites you to come visit their busi-ness to learn their stories and enjoy what they have to offer. From Historical 6th Street to trendsetting 2nd Street, from downtown to midtown to uptown you will find the most unique shopping and dining experiences.

There is so much to love about our great city, and this issue really sums it up. We have been Celebrating Austin for the past 30 years, and we are looking forward to the next 30. Whether this is your first visit or you have been here many times before, let us show you “How to Celebrate Austin.” We invite you to use our visitors’ guide as your gateway to the city. We have added new sections and content that create an excit-ing visitors’, newcomers’ and locals’ guide at your fingertips.

Y’all come back, now. Warmest Regards,

As a visitor, how would some-one characterize Austin? For that matter, how would a local characterize Austin?

What is there to do, what does it have to offer, and how do these things make it unique? The real question is where to begin.

Start with the biggest ingredient – literally – the capitol city is home to the largest state capitol building in the United States, a feat of architec-ture that brings to life Texas’ proud and independent history. Add to that Austin’s unique politics; long known as a single blue dot in a sea of red, Austin’s colorful political views reflect the extreme diversity of the city. Stir in a rich, deep-rooted musical history, a significant selection of art houses and museums, and a generous handful of locally owned and revered restaurants and businesses. Top it off with the pic-turesque and culturally rich Hill Coun-try that surrounds the city, and you’ve started to create the melting pot that is Austin.

The people of Austin thrive in this self-styled environment. The temper-ate weather encourages outdoor ac-tivity, and the folks make good use of the multiple outlets in which to hike, bike, walk, run, or swim. The art and music scene is a living, breathing thing in Austin, and you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting someone of such persuasion. Hippies and hipsters alike bump elbows with the forces of gen-trification without sacrificing their soul. Ask anyone on the street and they’ll tell you – Austin is proud of its eclectic heritage and fiercely protective of its free-thinking, liberal spirit.

So where do we end up? Visitors come for the beautiful environment and the interesting tourist attractions. They stick around because of the in-fectiously positive vibe. And in the end, they get carried away with the thrum of Austin’s lifestyle until finally they re-alize – they’re not a tourist at all, but instead another piece of what makes Austin unique in the first place. n

Local Art & Galleries

Austin is a very artistic city, influenced by the modern galleries of down-town, to the funky artistic towns that surround it. Be sure not to miss all of the ways Austin celebrates art- from First Thurday celebrations on South Congress to the bi-annual Pecan Street Festival, held on Sixth Street ever May and September. Don’t forget to visit the beautiful nearby towns that host art festivals- like the Wimberely Market Days, which are held the first Saturday of every month from March through December.

ART IS EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK, SO IF YOU’RE IN THE MARKET TO TAKE

HOME A LITTLE SLICE OF AUSTIN LIFE, YOUR

SEARCH WILL NOT BE A DIFFICULT ONE.

by Christy Wink

Austin is a city defined by its cre-ative heart, individual soul and eccentric spirit. Its inhabitants are at its expressive and ever-evolv-

ing core, and they wear “weird” as a proud badge of their citizenship. The city and its people exist in a symbiotic relationship, each thriving off the creative energy of the other. Austin has an inspirational vibe that is fueled by the enthusiasm of its people, who are notorious for their active lifestyles, free thinking and love of all things art and media. No wonder, then, that Austin’s visi-tors are eager to take part in its culture and bring back a part of that unique atmosphere to relive and reflect upon, at home.

Arguably the artistic epicenter of Austin, downtown is alive with the spirit of creation. It is known for its pervasive music scene, diverse performing arts venues and, of course, its eclectic offering of visual arts. From Sixth Street to the Warehouse Dis-

trict, South Congress to The Drag, the streets of downtown are a hive of activity for the visual arts, be it painting, glass, sculpture- even those Austin originals that defy the traditional classifications of artistic media.

Art is everywhere you look, so if you’re in the market to take home a little slice of Austin life, your search will not be a difficult one. The diversity that personifies Aus-

tin is reflected in the sheer scope of selection to be had. The streets of down-town offer every genre of art for purchase, in any imaginable setting. Large selections

of fine contemporary art hang quietly in peaceful and austere museum-quality set-tings. Roomfuls of unique sculptures and glasswork are tucked carefully away in tiny antique houses turned galleries. Austin’s offerings also run the gamut of Texas art, whether it’s quirky cowboy-kitsch or sweep-ing Southwestern-style murals.

In addition to the galleries and museums peppering the downtown and hill country scene, there are numerous festivals and exhibitions throughout the year to expand buying opportunities. One of the highlights includes Art City Austin, occurring over the last weekend in April 2010. Each year, hun-dreds of emerging and independent artists spread themselves out over the rolling hills and streets surrounding Austin City Hall to sell their creations to thousands of eager art enthusiasts.

For even more of the flavor of Austin, head down to 6th Street in either May or September for the bi-annual Old Pecan Street Arts Festival, a 30-year Austin tradi-tion. The Pecan Street Festival is a smor-gasbord of local music, food and arts & crafts.

Visitors arriving in Austin early in the month can catch First Thursday on South Congress. Affectionately referred to as SoCo, this hip, bohemian section of down-town plays host to a wide variety of events and activities, including arts & crafts ven-dors, street performers and plenty of peo-ple watching. Local stores keep their doors open until 10 p.m. or later, and welcome you in with a cold beer and a smile. n

THE HEALTHY AND ROBUST

ECONOMY, COMBINED WITH

AN ACTIVE, YOUTHFUL CITY

MAKES AUSTIN AN

ATTRACTIVE LOCATION TO

BOTH LIVE IN AND VISIT.

Austin proudly carries the title as the Capital of Texas. The Texas

State Capitol building houses both the Texas State Legislature and the

state Governor office. Free tours are conducted daily!

The Austin region, with a popula-tion of about 1.6 million people, ranks fourth among the coun-try’s 200 largest metropolitan

areas, according to the Milken Institute and Greenstreet Real Estate Partners’ 2008 Best Performing Cities list. Based on such criteria as job creations, competi-tive salaries and growth of technology, Austin outperforms many other areas of the country and excels in sustaining jobs and economic growth. Even in a sluggish nationwide economy, Forbes’ has just listed Austin, Texas as one of the best places to spend your dollar on a list of where money goes the furthest in the cur-rent market. Affordable housing, low gas prices, sluggish inflation and a healthy job market make Austin very appealing. Nes-tled in the middle of the Lone Star State, Austin is a shining star in the energy and technology sectors.

To make Austin even more appealing, Travel+ Leisure just gave the Capital of Texas 2nd place for its friendliness and athleticism and 3rd place for intelligence; about 40% of adult Austinites hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, according to bizjournal.com.

The music and entertainment sector of Austin adds to its success, with the week-long and world-famous South by Southwest Festival and Conference and the weekend-long Austin City Limits Fes-tival, combined with other music festivals pumping millions a year into the Austin economy. The success generated by Aus-tin-filmed television series “Friday Night Lights” and movies such as Spy Kids, Sin

City and Secondhand Lions have added a new level excitement to the urban mecca that has become Austin. The city’s sup-port over its growing entertainment indus-try gives it a welcome edge and different perspective in an economy otherwise fo-cused on technology, education and poli-tics.

Austin enjoys a successful technology sector and is well-known for its universi-ties, but it still maintains its “weirdness” by attracting unique businesses from around the country to make a new home in the “Live Music Capital of the World.” This year, ArtistForce.com, the Los Angeles-based business platform and professional marketplace for the live entertainment in-dustry announced the decision to relocate its sales, marketing and software devel-opment teams to Austin, according to the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce.

Joining the Austin corporate scene is Twisted Pixel Games, Setcom Corpora-tion and Clean Technology and Sustain-able Industries Org. The healthy and ro-bust economy, combined with an active, youthful city makes Austin an attractive location to start your business.

The mild humid subtropical climate allows for a lot of outdoor activity and sprawling the corporate campuses makes the 40+ acre campus of the University of Texas extraordinarily accessible. Austin is a green and eco-friendly city, interested in growth and modernism, maintaining a quaint and rustic downtown scene while melding effortlessly with the sprawling Texas Hill Country around it. n

The bustling Capital of Texas is always alive, night and day. The ever-growing and always changing skyline welcomes visitors, locals and newcomers to enjoy the exciting urban activity found within.

Refresh, Refine and RENU Yourself- Without Surgery!YOU MIGHT FIND YOURSELF SURPRISED

WITH THE EASY, qUICK, AFFORDABLE

AND LESS-INVASIVE OPTIONS

AVAILABLE TO YOU.

Before

After

In this busy day and age the concept of renewing oneself seems to have been tossed out the window with yesterday’s dry

cleaning. New and innovate advance-ments in the world of cosmetics has made the concept of giving oneself a little attention more attainable than ever as services have become faster, safer and more affordable. The most wonderful advancement about modern day options is that often, clients are pleased to discover that they do not

require surgery.

One recent patient (see before and after, left) at RENU Fa-cial Cosmetic Center, walked in the doors for a consultation, convinced she needed lower eyelid surgery that would easily cost her thou-sands of dollars. Dr. Christopher Thompson, one of three specialists on staff, discussed a range of op-tions to treat her concern areas, the downtime associated with each and the cost. The patient then chose to have the non-invasive procedure done that day, because of the ease and speed of it. Less than an hour later, this patient was able to walk out the door with almost no down-time and a third of the cost she had considered.

The experienced facial cosmetic surgeons at RENU Facial Cosmetic Center, located in con-venient North Austin, can layer the filler deeply onto the facial skeleton, to provide amazing improvements in not only the eye area of the face, but can also elevate cheeks, lift the mid-face, restore youthful volume to the central face, reduce jowl formation and elevate down-turned

corners of the mouth region. All of these options can be done within surprisingly short window of time, such as a scheduled break at work. RENU offers a wide range of facial cosmetic procedures that will refine and refresh your ap-pearance. Consultations include a detailed review of facial and neck features using exciting, high-resolu-tion photography. You might find yourself being surprised with the easy, quick, affordable and less-invasive options available to you. The facial cosmetic surgeons at RENU have many years of experi-ence in the great variety of surgical techniques to renew your entire look. Drs. Slaughter, Thompson, and Wassmuth specialize in cos-metic surgery procedures, such as rhinoplasty, face lifts, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and browlifts. The board-certified facial plastic sur-geons use their skills as artists and surgeons to obtain natural-looking, tailored results that look propor-tional to an individual’s ethnic and racial features and match his or her aesthetic goals. nTake a Break in the Capital City!

The massive vein of artistry and creativity that keeps Austin alive manifests itself in the awesome variety of shopping opportunities. To say the options are varied or the selection is eclectic would be wholly insufficient to describe the wares the city has to offer. Remember, you are in Austin. You have but to exhale to breathe upon the nearest chic boutique. Don’t be afraid to step off the beaten path a bit – undiscovered bounty is just around the bend.

New York, Paris, Mi-lan… Austin? Although Central Texas seems an unlikely shopper’s

paradise, do not be deceived by ap-pearances. This big state certainly serves up big style. Austin is home to an eclectic mix of stores that re-flect the diversity of its people. You will find everything here from organic hummus clothing to antique silver hand mirrors, and more. Don’t be surprised if the trendy Austinite you just passed walking down Congress Avenue is wearing $300 designer jeans tucked into those beat up vintage cowboy boots. The fashion mindset in Austin illustrates a pervasive anything-goes attitude. Don’t be afraid to express yourself; no one in Austin is. The wonder-ful thing about shopping in Central Texas is that you can find just about anything. The shops and streets are packed with new and vintage clothing and accessories; fine an-

tiques; toys; an amazing selection of cowboy boots and shoes; hand crafted furniture; Texas gifts and souvenirs; electronics; local artwork and handicrafts; and books. To spend a nice day outside, start at the Drag, the strip of Gua-dalupe Street that runs on the west-ern edge of the University of Texas campus. Near the Capitol building, one can shop for local art at gal-leries around the West End and Congress Avenue. Go farther south, and you’ll discover the funky strip of South Congress Av-enue known as SoCo – home to ultra-cool boutiques, hip cof-fee shops, antique dealers, and appetiz-ing restaurants. The newest trendy ares in Austin would include The Domain, in North Austin at Braker, and

2nd Street, just behind the Ware-house District. Don’t forget to visit midtown- from 51st, up Burnet and Lamar, for tons of unique and hid-den treasures. Whether you’re a window shop-per, bargain hunter, antique lover, shopaholic or just in need of a little retail therapy, Central Texas shop-ping is unparalleled. Before you set out armed with just your wallet, heed a word of expert advice: be prepared to shop until you drop! n

Where the Locals Dine

The only thing Austinites love more than their city is the food. Inspired by its flamboyant nature and buffered by its undying support of local business, Austin offers a long history and vast selection of excellent eateries. The culinary diversity here is limited only by our capacity for imagination. So be daring. Grab a taco from the nearest roadside food vendor or tie on a bib and settle down for a family-style BBq feast – you won’t regret it.

Hospitality reigns in Central Texas, particularly at the din-ner table. From their politics to their palates, Austin citi-

zens demonstrate a comprehensive range of preferences, and the bur-geoning city’s unapologetic need for a rich dining scene has lured a collection of skilled chefs who come from around the world to prepare culinary delights to satisfy every appetite. From cool Japanese steak-houses to fine French bistros, you can enjoy cuisine from around the globe right here in Austin. With hundreds of restaurants in the area, there are eateries to suit every taste. Many restaurants serve special dish-es to accommodate even the pickiest of eaters. Even in a land dominated by steakhouses and barbecue joints, vegetarian restaurants are plentiful, and chefs aim to please by concoct-ing flavorful recipes like barbecued tofu and spicy meatless chili for their guests. Home-style cooking in Central Texas may put your mother’s meatloaf to shame. Here you can feast on Southern favorites like chicken fried steak, fluffy mashed potatoes, fresh veggies, warm cornbread, delicious pecan pie, and hearty chili. It would be sinful to leave Texas without indulging in some saucy barbecue. Texans will barbecue just about anything – it doesn’t matter if it’s pork, beef, or chicken; loin, brisket, or breast, we will throw it over an open flame and douse it in delicious thick barbecue sauce. Don’t be afraid to get your fingers dirty; napkins are plentiful and bibs are often provided! Although Texas is best known for its Southern home-style cooking, Austin provides an excellent selection of foreign cuisines. Lo-cal chefs prepare tasty dishes from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Caribbean, India, South and Central America, and, of course, Mexico. With one of the largest Hispanic and Latino populations in the na-tion, Central Texas boasts some of

the best authentic Mexican dishes north of the border. In addition to the multitude of fabulous Mexican restaurants around Austin, Tex-Mex is also popular. Favorites like breakfast tacos, chips and salsa, fresh tortillas, burritos, and margari-tas are staples in many Austinites’ diets. There is nothing better to wash down a good meal with than a great drink, and the area has of bars, wineries, and breweries where you can do so. In addition to

in-town brewpubs, Central Texas hosts the Spoetzle Brewery, located in the tiny town of Shiner. Spoetzle is famous for handcrafting Shiner Bock, a seasonal full-flavored, deep amber-colored beer popular with Austin residents. If you’re in the mood for a good glass of vino, visit the Hill Country, where beautiful rolling hills and abundant sunshine have created a backdrop for some excellent vineyards, and make a great destination for a wine-tasting getaway weekend. n

DINING

Fine Dining in the Capital City

by Christy Wink

Austin has long been known for its eclectic offering of dining destinations, rang-ing from the expected (Tex-

Mex, BBq – some of the best in the world!) to the more worldly or even completely unexpected (ever been served a humongous cupcake out of a 1960’s Airstream?). One perk of grub-bing in this wickedly weird city is the privilege of dressing to suit your own style when hitting the town. Going ca-sual is an unspoken rule in Austin, and to dress down is to look like a local.

One of the rare occasions in which an Austinite trades in the cargos for a pair of slacks is the opportunity to sit down at one of the city’s many fine dining establishments. It might not be the first thing you think of when visiting this fair city, but make no mistake that Austin has become a culinary epicenter for prestigious up-and-coming chefs and both nationally known and self-proclaimed foodies. From succulent, tender Texas beef to fresh seafood flown in from the Gulf and beyond to delicate, handmade pastas, Austin has a world of haute cuisine at its fingertips to satisfy even the most discriminating gastronome.

As is expected in a city so dependent on its local businesses, the number of family- and privately owned upscale restaurants at least equal the number of the finer chain establishments. Downtown institutions such as the Culinary Academy of Austin and Le Cordon Bleu continually infuse new talent into the marketplace, keeping Austin relevant in the ever-evolving world of epicurean excellence.

So at least once while you’re here, be a gourmand. Step out of your sneakers and into some of Austin’s exceptional cuisine. n

HISTORIC

SIXTH STREET

Historic Sixth Street

Sixth Street is the city of Austin’s eclectic and famous roads, well-known for its fun, boisterous night life and live music scene. What many people do not know is that Sixth Street is also one of the most historic districts in town and contains a large range of unique retail, restaurant and entertainment venues that are pedestrian friendly during the daytime as well as the nighttime. Before Sixth Street became the bustling urban center that it is now, it was once called Pecan Street, and was the main thoroughfare into town (a nice flat trail) for the farmland communities to the east, and soon became a major commerce district. By the 1860s, log and frame houses, wagon yards, livery stables, and saloons were present along Pecan Street, as were pigs and cows from time to time. What is now modern day Buffalo Billiards was once Missouri House, erected in 1861, and was Austin’s first boarding home for weary travelers on their way to the Wild West. The beautiful Littlefield Building, at the northeast corner of Sixth and Congress, was built in 1910 and displays the beautiful architecture know as Beaux Arts Style. At the time of it’s completion, it was undeniably the most modern and opulent building in the southwest part of the nation. This building was the tallest skyscraper between New Orleans and San Francisco at the time (be sure to ask on the local shop owners about the fun rivalry that added a ninth floor to this impressive building). Located within Littlefield, in modern day Austin, is Hatbox, a haberdashery that com-bines old world charm with contemporary style, and is well-recognized for being “every man and woman’s” hat store. Right next store is the beloved Wild About Music store, the worlds first and only art and gift gallery dedicated entirely to music. This unique retail treasure represents over 100 locals, national and international artists and carries thou-sands of items all entirely dedicated to music. No trip to

Historic, modern-day Sixth Street was once known as Pecan Street, and was the major thoroughfare into town. There is no need to leave pedestrian-friendly Sixth Street, as today it is lined with delicious restaurants, fun retail and unique entertainment to last from morning until the evening.

HISTORIC

SIXTH STREET

Austin is complete without visiting these locally recom-mended stores. Within easy walking distance is Lucky Lizards & Museum of the Weird, a beloved Austin favorite that cannot be missed! The museum features mummies, unexplained phe-nomena, and self-proclaimed “freaks of nature,” as well as a clever curio and gift shop on the street front which carries a large inventory of local artisan’s products as well as unique imported goods and souvenirs. Right across the street is Bobalu Cigar Co., which proudly presents fine boutique cigars made live in the window by real Cuban born cigar rollers. This locally renowned shop also carries a fantastic selection of cases and accessories. Although historical Sixth Street is extraordinarily pedes-trian friendly, don’t miss out on your chance to tour Austin in the most fun way possible at Segway Tours, located near Bobalu Cigar Co. The tours take you from Sixth Street to the State Capitol and you will be amazed at what you’ll learn! On a hot Summer afternoon, don’t forget the opportunity to step inside the crisp air conditioned interior of Alamo Drafthouse, which plays movies in the early afternoon and into the evening, and features continually evolving special events and fun features. The food is amazing, the atmo-sphere is fun and refreshing, and you’ll be amazed at the authentic and original old movie interior, which was one known as The Ritz. After all this shopping, touring and fun, don’t forget to stop at any of the world famous bars or restaurants that line Sixth Street. Maggie Mae’s Austin has stood proud for over thirty years and is located in a beautifully restored building erected in 1874 and features an authentic New Orleans style courtyard with a staircase that extends to a rooftop that allows for a gorgeous view of downtown Austin. Right across the street is Iron Cac-tus Restaurant and Margarita Bar, which is located in an enchanting turn-of-the-century building which was remodeled as recently as 1995 to maintain the authentic, historical aspects of its construction that make Sixth Street so charming. There are countless hidden trea-sures along this wonderful corridor that makes up the heart of Austin. Don’t miss the daytime opportunities that abound in the form of shopping, retail and, for the historically inclined, the beautiful monuments that abound from the legendary Driskill Hotel next to the Littlefield Building and on toward IH35. n

You might have heard a little something here or there about the music scene in Austin. Chances are, if

you aren’t in town for business, your trip has something to do with one of our famous music festivals. If not, you can be fairly certain that the mu-sic will touch your visit in some form or fashion while you’re here. Wander the streets of downtown during the day, and you will likely encounter bands unloading equipment for a gig or rehearsing in garages cubbied between old stone buildings. As the evenings descend, the city comes alive and the music takes over, buoying its inhabitants on sweet gui-tar riffs. Imbued as it is in Austin’s history, music leaves an indelible mark on today’s culture – one that bleeds into the streets of the city and hearts of the people. Austin’s great musical heritage is not a tale told by museum portraits or untouchable ar-tifacts. It lives in the landmark per-formance venues that gave the city and the musicians a name; it haunts the nighttime establishments packed throughout downtown. From legend-

ary artists like Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan who got their start back in the early Austin scene, to relatively new or up-and-coming musicians, the spirit of music is a continuous presence in all aspects of life here. It is this deep dedication that has gained Austin the worthy title of “Live Music Capital of the World.”

Austin’s inherited namesake is supremely invoked during any one of its yearly music festivals, includ-ing South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and Fun Fun Fun. Lasting anywhere from a couple of days to an entire week, thousands of music makers and lovers alike flock to the streets of downtown for nonstop au-ral stimulation and other forms of rev-elry. The excitement often lasts long into the night, spilling over into the numerous bars, clubs and lounges of Austin in the form of after-parties and impromptu jam sessions.

The best aspect of Austin night-life is that there is always something happening. In any given night you can find a wide variety of energetic live music shows, bumping night

clubs and cool cocktail lounges. The most popular is Sixth Street where venues range from cozy pubs to raucous dance clubs, music from raw alternative rock to sweet, soul-ful blues. Want to hang like a local? Head over to the Red River district to hear the best indie band you’ve never heard of.

For a slightly slower paced, more sophisticated environment, head a couple of blocks over to the Ware-house District. Spanning along Fourth Street from Guadalupe to Congress, you’ll find a vibrant yet still laid-back selection of cocktail lounges, wine bars and tap houses. Looking for ultra hip? Check out SoCo, an eight-block strip of South Congress that nurtures and fosters the funky little bohemian spirit in ev-ery Austinite. Whatever you’re doing for the evening in Austin, get into the vibe and find some great music. Just duck into the nearest dive – you might very well discover the next big act coming out of Austin… or is that the phantom wail of Janis echoing off those weathered walls? n

Founded in 1887 by General Adam R. Johnson, Marble Falls is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country on

the Colorado River. Before the dam was built to form Lake Marble Falls, water cascaded over 20-foot ledges which resembled marble, providing a name for the new city. The falls are now underwater and only vis-

ible on those rare occasions when the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) lowers the lake for repairs to the dam and boat docks.

The first city officials were elected in 1907 when a mayor-alderman form of government was instituted. In 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Crosby Harwood was elected mayor - thus becoming the first woman mayor in the United States to be elected by an all male electorate.

However, it was the 866-foot stone monolith called Granite Mountain loom-ing on the town’s western edge that se-cured Marble Falls’ place in Texas his-tory. It was here that the famed “Texas Pink” granite was quarried to construct the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin. The stone was a donation from progres-sive area citizens in exchange for a rail connection with Austin. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad built an extension to Marble Falls from Granite Mountain in 1889, and a post office was also estab-lished that year. Granite Mountain is still actively quarried, and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world.

Today, it is the natural setting of lakes and hills that makes the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ area one of the most attrac-tive and popular tourist and retirement destinations in all of Texas. When explor-
