    Banking

    For the MBA and Diploma programme,

    you should have at least three yearsrelevant work experience as well as arecognised UK Bachelors degree, orinternational equivalent, in economics,

    business administration, accountingor related discipline. Your applicationmay also be considered if you havesufficient relevant work experience

    and a recognised professionalqualification in accounting, bankingor another related subject.

    This module explores the

    microeconomics of banking fromthe perspectives of both theoryand practice. The range of topicsincludes: information theory ofbanks, bubble economy, credit

    rationing, and banking regulations.

    Bank Financial Management

    This module concentrates on theprinciples of bank management of

    assets and liabilities. You will learnabout the principles of bank balancesheet management and moneymarket operations, as well as

    liquidity ratios and capital adequacyratios. You will also study issues of

    bank supervision and regulation.

    Bank Regulation & Resolution of

    Banking Crises

    The recent banking crisis hasmotivated heightened discussionof the merits of bank regulations

    used to minimise the risk of bankdistress and intervention tools to

    mitigate its effects. In this moduleyou will study technical aspects ofbank regulation, supervision and

    intervention to resolve crises.

    Banking Strategy

    The module examines bank strategyin the global economy. This module

    deals with the strategic (as opposedto operational) side of internationalbanking, such issues as how banksare funded, how they acquire loan

    books, how they enter new marketsand how they deal with internationalregulatory requirements.

    Corporate Finance

    By studying this module you will

    learn how to relate finance theoriesand practice to the financing and

    investing decisions of enterprisesin modern economies.

    Financial Law

    This module provides an

    understanding of the essential

    elements of financial law, examiningthe legal principles governing boththe relations between financial

    institutions and their customers andalso the financial relations betweencommercial entities. The moduleis based on English law. It includessuch topics as bank deposits and

    accounts, the law relating to moneyand payments, and the law coveringboth secured and unsecured lending.

    Introduction to Valuation

    This module introduces you tothe core principles of valuationcreation. The module discussesthe theoretical foundations of

    valuation methods, based on theseminal contributions by Modiglianiand Miller, and examines theinteractions between strategyand finance. You will learn how to

    value a company through detailedexamples and by making use ofspreadsheet models.

    Law & Regulation of Electronic

    Finance & Internet Banking

    From this module, you will gaina grounding in the legal andregulatory issues concerning

    electronic banking and finance

    in different jurisdictions, including

    in the UK and at EU level. You will

    I wanted the technical skills to understand thenew financial economics. As for the coursesthemselves they steer a happy medium betweenthe practical and the formal.     This module is designed to followon from Econometric Principles &

    Econometric Principles

    & Data Analysis

    This module focuses on the useof statistical and mathematicalmethods in analysing economicdata. You will examine theinteraction between data andeconomic theories, with particular

    Financial Econometrics

    Public Policy & Management:Perspectives & Issues

    You will be introduced to the mainprinciples and techniques of public

    policy and management. The moduleexamines the scope and functionsof government in a critical andcomparative way, ideal types of

    management and policy transfer aswell as introducing policy evaluation.

    Decentralisation & Local Governance

    You will study the fiscal and policyrelationships between local and

    sub-national government. Themodule explores democracy and

    public participation in the policyprocess, local poverty reduction

    and local economic development.

    E-Government

    Information and communicationtechnologies are prevalent in

    government, in administration,democratic processes and service

    delivery. This module offers astrategic view of the design and

    implementation of systems forgovernments at national and sub-national levels. It also offers waysto avoid ICT failures.

    Environmental & Social Impact

    Assessment

    This module will give you a

    theoretical and applied backgroundto environmental and social impactanalysis a requirement for a widerange of investment projects in

    both the public and private sectors.The module also introduces toolsthat are used to support ESIA, waysof improving the effectiveness ofESIA, and other techniques, used

    to investigate the environmentaland social implications of projectsand other initiatives.

    Human Resource Management

    You will be introduced to the methodsand issues of public financial

    management. The module examinescost management, budgeting,

    expenditure control techniquesand performance budgeting.

    Public Financial Management:

    Revenue

    The module addresses the theoryand practice of public finance

    with special reference to howgovernments raise revenues and

    how they use taxation to pursuepolicy aims. This module is mainlyconcerned with taxation, borrowingand aid.

    Public Policy & Management:

    Development AssistanceDevelopment assistance is animportant part of donor countriesforeign policy and can be a

    significant source of revenue forrecipients. In this module you willstudy the history of developmentassistance and assess the impact

    that receiving aid has on countriesin terms of their development,rate of economic growth, labourmarket, quality of governance,government accountability and

    policy implementation.

    Public Policy & Strategy

    You will cover the policy process,

    from problem definition andmeasurement, option appraisal

    and assessment, to implementationand evaluation, and use case studies

    from a variety of different settings.While it follows the rational model,

    it also assesses critically how andwhere such a model does and doesnot apply, and covers approaches to

    strategic management techniquesin the public sector.

    The IMF & Economic Policy

    The module examines the changing

    roles of the IMF and the natureof the economic principles that itencourages countries to pursue.You will learn about some of the

    effects that these policies haveon the economic environment ofbusiness, on the financial sectorand on social conditions.

    Research MethodsThis module will develop yourresearch skills which you can applylater to consultancy and research

    projects. It will provide you witha thorough understanding of thetheoretical concepts, methodologicalapproaches and reporting issues

    that underpin good quality research,and has a specific emphasis on howto evaluate the merits of existingresearch. Completion of this moduleis a prerequisite if you have decidedto write a dissertation.

    Dissertation

    The dissertation is a supervisedpiece of research on a topic that

    we will agree with you. It should be10,000 words long. Before we canconsider a proposal to submit adissertation, we will need to reviewyour academic performance so

    far. Completion of the ResearchMethods module is a prerequisitefor writing the dissertation.

    Learning hours

    You will need to allocate at least

    15 to 20 hours a week to completethe modules. It is a good idea to planyour study periods to coincide withtimes of the year when you may beless busy. You should also make

    sure that you have adequate time toprepare for the exams held in October.

    Module assessment

    For each module that makes up yourprogramme, you will complete two

    assignments each worth 15% of yourtotal marks. You will be expected tosubmit your first assignment by theTuesday of Week 5, and the second

    assignment at the end of the module,on the Tuesday after Week 8. You willalso sit a three-hour examinationscheduled in October, worth 70%of your total module mark.
