優才增益課程(2017年夏季)

Course Introduction 課程簡介

The “Enrichment Program for Gifted Learners (EPGL) – Summer 2017” offered by The Center for the Development of the

Gifted and Talented (CDGT) will be held from July to August 2017 and is now open for application. EPGL offers workshops and

short courses in Mathematics, Chemistry, Life Science, Physics, Engineering and Computer Science to students from senior primary

to secondary school. It aims at providing students with opportunities to participate in different areas of study with plenty of hands-on

activities so as to broaden their horizons. Under the guidance of our instructors, students will enjoy an enriched learning experience

on HKUST campus.

香港科技大學資優教育發展中心將於 7月至 8月份舉辦「優才增益課程 – 2017年夏季」,現正接受報名。優才增益課程提

供工作坊及短期課程,科目涵蓋數學、化學、生命科學、物理、工程和計算機科學等不同範疇,供有興趣的高小至中學同

學選讀,藉此擴闊視野,在大學導師的指導下,進行有趣味的研習活動,一嘗在科大校園學習的滋味。

課程簡介

In this course, we will introduce various important concepts in mathematics through a combination of

classroom teaching and interactive online learning so as to enhance students’ appreciation of the beauty of

mathematics. Topics covered include numeral system; length, area and volume; counting and probability;

elementary concepts in graph theory.

本課程混合課堂講學及網上互動學習模式,生動地介紹一些重要的數學概念,令同學們能更深入地

欣賞數學之美。講題包括:數字系統,長度、面積與體積,計數與概率,圖論中的基本概念。

Dr. Ku Yin Bon ── Dr. Ku is currently working as a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, HKUST.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics at UCLA in the United States before joining HKUST. He has a keen

interest in education technology and digital learning - he helped the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted

Education (HKAGE) develop various online mathematics courses for secondary school students. He also

has extensive experience in using a variety of education technology to enhance students' learning in his

undergraduate mathematics courses.

辜彥邦博士 ── 現任香港科技大學數學系講師,於美國加州大學洛杉磯分校取得數學哲學博士學

位。辜博士熱愛教育科技及數碼學習,曾為香港資優教育學苑設計了多個中學數學網上學習課程。

辜博士教學經驗豐富,亦擅於使用多元化教學科技提升大學生在數學課程的學習表現。

Matrix is the foundation of advanced mathematics. Matrix arises from the need to solve systems of linear

equations. Despite its humble origins, matrix ends up playing a profound role in both pure and applied

mathematics, as well as in all science and engineering, computer science, statistics, economics,

mathematical biology and many other disciplines. Topics to be covered in this course include systems of

linear equations, Gaussian elimination and inverse matrices.

矩陣是學習高等數學的一個重要工具,它最初用於解線性方程組,看似微不足道,但對於純數學、

應用數學、科學、工程、電腦科學、 統計學、經濟學、數學生物學的研究發揮重要貢獻。本課程將

討論線性方程組、高斯消去法及逆矩陣等內容。

Mathematical Thinking and Problem Solving 數學思維與解難

(Course Code 課程編號:M801)

Description

課程簡介

This course aims to introduce some mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills; common heuristics

such as looking for pattern, analytic and synthetic reasoning, method of substitution, proof by contradiction

and mathematical induction are included. Students are expected to understand, master and be able to apply

them. Students will be guided to exercise deep learning method to enhance their mastery of mathematical

thinking.

本課程闡述數學思維和解難的規律、方法與技巧;通過本課程使學生瞭解分析法、綜合法、代換法、

反證法、歸納法等數學方法的理念與應用。導師會指導學生運用深度學習模式,從而提升數學思維

能力。

Mr. Leung Chit Wan──Mr. Leung is an experienced educational practitioner (mathematics & gifted

education). He has worked as the Vice-Chair and is now the Secretary of International Mathematical

Olympiad Hong Kong Committee and a former veteran member of Chinese Mathematical Society

Olympiad Committee. He is also the founder of China Western Mathematical Olympiad & China Girls'

Mathematical Olympiad. He has also served as the Chief School Support Officer and Assessment Consultant

for the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence with the Education Bureau of Hong Kong.

Mr. Cheng Wei Min──Mr. Cheng, vice-principal of a secondary school, is an experienced mathematics

teacher. He is currently a Senior Trainer/Coach for Mathematical Olympiad.

梁哲雲先生──資深教育工作者(數學、資優教育)。前香港教育局總學校支援主任,前行政長官

卓越教學獎評審顧問及前中國數學會奧林匹克委員會委員,亦是中國西部數學奧林匹克及中國女子

數學奧林匹克發起人,曾為國際數學奧林匹克香港委員會副主席,現為該會秘書。

Molecular Science in Personal Care Products 個人護理品的分子科學

(Course Code 課程編號:C102)

Description

課程簡介

Proper use of personal care products (including skin-care products, sunscreen/ sunblock products,

deodorants, hair-care products, etc.) translates to an art of enhancing physical beauty and personal

attractiveness. But what is a chemist’s viewpoint - a molecular approach? For example, the texture,

whitening effect and anti-oxidizing functions of a skin-care product are the results of structural differences

in the molecules which are invisible to the naked eyes. Indeed, abundance of knowledge lies behind common

personal care products that we encounter in our everyday life. By understanding the science behind the

products, we could stay clear-headed in judging what the TV commercials and advertisements are trying to

instill in us every day. For example, does the foam hair dye work better than the traditional ones? Can some

specific hair treatment products really prevent frizzy hair?

In this course, students will not only learn the chemistry involved in these products and work on a

presentation focusing on a topic of their interest, they will also carry out a hands-on experiment using a

modern chemical instrument for quantitative analysis of a personal care product.

談及個人護理品(包括護膚、防曬、止汗、護髮用品等),一般人只想到這些是美化外觀及增加吸

引力的工具,但是從化學家的分子觀角度來理解又是怎樣的呢?例如一瓶護膚品的質地、美白效果

和抗氧化功能,是靠著肉眼看不到的分子結構差異,達到多樣化的護理功能,背後的分子科學知識

實在不少。只要了解產品背後的科學原理,我們便能夠理性分析廣告中所灌輸的產品功效。例如:

泡泡染髮劑比傳統染髮劑是否更加有效?某些護理產品是否真的能預防頭髮乾燥問題?

在本課程,學生除了有機會認識個人護理品背後的化學知識,以及就自己感興趣的題目進行專題研

習,更可動手利用現代化學分析儀器,就個人護理品進行定量分析的實驗。

Dr. Yip Wing Ping──Dr. Yip is responsible for General Chemistry Laboratory course for Undergraduate

Science/Engineering disciplines at HKUST. He also provides safety training and laboratory management to

postgraduate students. He has more than 5-year teaching experience for the EPGL program offered by the

Center for the Development of the Gifted and Talented, HKUST and training activities to secondary school

teachers organized by the Education Bureau.

Dr. Joanne Tung──Dr. Tung is a Laboratory Instructor at the Department of Chemistry, HKUST. She

specialises in the disciplines of analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis, and has wide experience of

teaching gifted students, e.g. programs offered by the Center for the Development of the Gifted and

Talented, HKUST and The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE). She has also been

teaching relevant courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the department.

葉永平博士──葉博士在香港科技大學主要負責科學及工程學科的本科化學實驗課程,亦為碩士學

生提供實驗室安全及管理訓練。葉博士擁有超過五年香港科技大學資優教育發展中心優才增益課程

的教學經驗,以及教育局舉辦的以中學教師為對象的培訓經驗。

董慧婷博士──董博士是香港科技大學化學系實驗室導師,專研分析化學及儀器分析。董博士有豐

富的資優教學經驗,曾為香港科技大學資優教育發展中心及香港資優教育學苑任教多個課程,並於

科大化學系任教各本科及碩士課程。

Description

課程簡介

The ability to code computer programs is an important part of literacy in today’s society. Coding allows you

to use computer as a tool to express yourself and realize your creative ideas. Most programming languages,

on first glance, "look like Greek" to the untrained eye. Is programming hard to learn? Am I capable to do it?

Which program language should I learn first?

Scratch is a programming language developed by MIT Media Lab. By representing programs' building

blocks with color-coded blocks, Scratch "lowers the bar" to programming, allowing you to focus on

problems rather than syntax. With drag-n-drop, you can easily create projects with audio and video effects,

and share your creations with others.

This course starts with basic operations in Scratch. Via lectures and hands-on labs, you will program your

own interactive stories, games, and animations. Learning to program is ultimately about learning to think

logically and to approach problems methodically. Basic programming principles, e.g. variables, arrays,

controls, loops, data abstraction and objects, are introduced in the course too. These are universal principles

for any modern programming language, and will be beneficial if you want to go further in coding.

fun, inspiring examples and interactivity to promote creativity in her classes.

Young Electronics Engineer 少年電子工程師

Description

課程簡介

This course aims at providing students a learning opportunity for university level courses on electronics

engineering through the teaching of reverse thinking skills. Different from conventional teaching which

normally starts from theory, in this course, we start from an engineering design problem. Students will be led

to the solution and understand the theories behind the solution during this experiential learning process.

Specifically, students will have the chance to construct various electronic gadgets (e.g. electronic calculator,

electric piano, etc.) using common electronic components available in market (e.g. integrated circuit, LED

and infrared receiver, etc.). Ultimately, the course will stimulate their interests in electronics engineering.

本課程透過逆向思維教學讓學生提早接觸在大學所教授的電子課程。與一般從理論出發的教學不

同,本課程以解答電子工程設計問題為起點,學生將利用坊間可購買的電子零件(如集成電路 IC、

LED、紅外線收發器等),製作多項電子習作(例如電子計算器、電子鋼琴等),從實際體驗中明白

背後的運作原理,藉此提高對科技的興趣。

Instructor

導師

Prof. Song Shenghui──Prof. Song is now an Assistant Professor of Engineering Education at the

Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at HKUST. His research is primarily in the areas of

wireless communications and robotics. He is also interested in the research on Engineering Education and is

now serving as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Education. He has won several teaching

awards at HKUST, including the Best Ten Lecturers, the School of Engineering Distinguished Teaching

Award, and the "Teachers I Like" Award.

宋勝輝教授──宋教授現為香港科技大學電子及計算機工程學系工程教育助理教授,主要研究範疇

為無線通訊及機器人。他對工程教育研究亦甚有興趣,現為《IEEE 教育學報》的副主编。宋教授

於科大獲得多個教學獎項,包括十大講師選舉、工學院傑出教學獎及 Teachers I Like獎項。

Plants, Fungi and Insects 植物、真菌及昆蟲

課程簡介

Living creatures are ubiquitous on planet earth. Various kinds of organisms are basic resources for mankind,

and are used for food, medicines, building materials, land protection and ornamentals. The threats of global

warming in recent years alert everyone to protect our natural environments. It is our fundamental

responsibilities to know more about plants, fungi, insects, and protect these organisms.

This course will introduce some interesting aspects of plants, fungi, and insects, including their species

diversity, classification, structures and functions, their ecological roles, and interactions within the

ecosystems - including their relationships with mankind. Students will explore more on the topics through a

series of instructional activities such as lectures, field trip, laboratory exercise, etc. Ultimately, the students

should develop a sense of respect to and appreciation for the mother nature.

生物在地球上隨處可見,許多生物是人類的基本資源,如提供食物、中草藥、建築材料;應用於水

土保持及園藝等。全球暖化日趨嚴重,大家均應關注自然環境,共同竭力創造更美好的生活環境。

而認識及保護人類周遭的植物、真菌及昆蟲,更是大家的基本責任。

本課程將配以實地考察,讓同學了解常見的植物、真菌及昆蟲的形態特徵、分類系統、在生態系统

的角色,以及物種之間的互動關係──包括與我們人類的關係。導師將以深入淺出的教學方法,透

過課堂講解、户外考察、在實驗室作微细觀察活動,引領學生認識這些有趣的生物,理解生物的多

樣性,並啟發學生對大自然的尊重及欣賞。

Dr. T. K. Goh──Dr. Goh obtained his Ph.D. degree at the University of Georgia in the U.S. in the field of

plant pathology. He has been a teacher and research scientist at various universities of Hong Kong and

Malaysia for more than 20 years. He has worked on fungi and published more than 100 research papers in

the field of mycology and plant pathology. Dr. Goh has taught various subjects related to plants, fungi, plant

diseases and insect pests, and his method of teaching has been well received by students.

吳德強博士──吳博士畢業於美國喬治亞大學,主修植物病理學,並從事生態及分類學的研究,在

國際科學期刊上已發表了上百篇有關真菌學及植物病理學的學術文章。過去二十多年來曾在香港及

馬來西亞幾間大學任教,主要擔任「生物多樣性」、「微生物學」等科目的導師,能夠以深入淺出的

方式教導「認識香港的植物」、「真菌學」及「植物病蟲害學」,並帶領非生物科專業的學員作野外

考察活動。

Medical Genetics 醫學遺傳及基因診斷

課程簡介

Why do we look alike/different? Will I get the same diseases as my parents and siblings? How do medical

laboratories diagnose genetic diseases? What does a genetic counsellor do?

This course aims to answer not just these fascinating questions but also discuss interesting concepts, case

studies and tests for diagnosing genetic disorders and inheritable diseases. Through group discussion, role

play and oral presentation, students will be able to expand their knowledge in medical genetics and improve

their critical thinking, scientific enquiry and communication skills.

大家可能曾經有這些疑問:為什麼我和家人樣貌這麼相似/不相似?這個病會遺傳嗎?究竟醫學實

驗室如何診斷遺傳性疾病?遺傳學醫生如何做醫學遺傳輔導?

本課程除了會解答以上問題,也會讓學生更了解基因與遺傳性疾病的關係。透過案例分析及討論,

參加者會認識到基因診斷過程,還會探索醫學遺傳研究的道德觀點,同時提升批判性思維、科學探

究和溝通技巧。

Dr. Lee Siu Po──Dr. Lee graduated from Oxford University in Biochemistry before completing her Ph.D.

in cancer genetics at The University of Hong Kong with the Li Ka Shing Prize for her outstanding thesis and

two publications in Nature Genetics. Dr. Lee has extensive experience in science education and enjoys

teaching science while participating actively in various science engagement activities in Hong Kong. She

started teaching for The Center for the Development of the Gifted and Talented, HKUST, since 2015. Dr.

Lee likes to bring the latest news into lessons so that students can understand the applications of science in

their everyday lives. Following the Oxbridge tutorial style, she likes to act as a facilitator and encourage

students to learn together. She believes that education should be lifelong and hopes to inspire her students to

become healthy and independent individuals. She is currently working at the Croucher Foundation where

she helps coordinate science education activities in Hong Kong.

李小寶博士──李博士於英國牛津大學修讀生物化學後回港,並於香港大學完成博士研究。她進行

的癌症基因學研究,在《自然基因》科學雜誌中發表了兩篇硏究報告,而她的畢業論文更是年度最

佳博士論文,榮獲香港大學李嘉誠奬。李博士從事科學教育多年,並熱心參與及推動香港科學普及

活動;自 2015 年起參與香港科技大學資優教育發展中心課程的教學工作,擅於在教學中注入嶄新

科學發展元素,令學生領悟科學如何應用於日常生活當中。她常以啟導方式鼓勵學生思考,從而達

到互動教學,教學相長。李博士堅信終身學習及希望啟發學生成為健康及獨立的社會棟樑。她正於

裘槎基金會工作,致力推動香港科學教育發展。

From Genes to Behaviors 行為遺傳學

(Course Code 課程編號:B807)

Description

課程簡介

Long before the era of molecular biology and human genome project, people have often questioned: What

makes up animal and human behaviors? And how true is the saying "like father, like son"? According to

Mendelian genetics, simple inheritance like eye colors and blood groups are passed from parents to progeny.

Then how much do genes influence basic behaviors like foraging and sophisticated behaviors such as social

interaction and intelligence? This course aims to provide an introduction to the elements surrounding the

subject of behavioral genetics and how they interact with each other. Students will learn about the basics of

genetics, various animal models, classic and modern human studies, e.g. twin studies and genomic screening

that have been applied to reveal genes that associate with interesting behaviors, such as the “anxiety gene”

and the “happy gene”. In-class interactive activities not only will facilitate a better understanding of the

principles and methods behind behavioral genetics, they will also help students develop their critical

thinking and presentation skills.

在人類開始研究分子生物學及進行第一次人類基因計劃的多個世紀前,我們早已經常有這樣的疑

問:是什麼在驅使各種動物和人類的行為?俗語有云「有其父必有其子」,又是否準確?孟德爾遺

傳學告訴我們,子女身上一些簡單的遺傳特徵,例如瞳色和血型,是經過基因從父母繼承過來的。

在類似的推理下,我們的日常行為,不論簡單如覓食,或複雜如人類智慧、社交互動等,究竟有多

少是源於基因遺傳或受其影響的呢?本課程旨在對行為遺傳學,以及行為跟基因之間如何相互影響

的主要課題,作入門的介紹。學生將學習基本的遺傳學原理、運用動物及人類的經典和嶄新行為遺

傳學研究,當中包括具標誌性的雙胞胎研究與基因組篩選,及科學家是怎樣應用這些技術來揭示一

些跟我們生活息息相關的人類行為,如「焦慮基因」和「快樂基因」。課堂中將融入互動元素,不

僅有助學生理解行為遺傳學的理論和應用,更有助他們發展批判性思考與表達能力。

Dr. Amy Kwok──Dr. Kwok obtained her Ph.D. majoring in molecular biology and endocrinology in The

University of Hong Kong. She is experienced in teaching and mentoring young students in undergraduate

courses and summer internship programme. She has a keen interest in applying interactive in-class activities

such as discussion and scenario-based problem-solving exercises to improve students' initiative and

understanding of the subjects.

Look Inside Our Body - Animal Physiology 「解剖」動物生理學

(Course Code 課程編號:B808)

Description

課程簡介

In this course, we will use a comparative approach to examine the physiology of selected animal systems

(such as the circulatory, nervous and sensory systems) with an emphasis on vertebrates. We will also

examine how physiological systems are integrated and thus allow animals to respond in different

environments. Moreover, dissection demonstrations will be conducted by the instructor, through which

students can observe the structures and feel the textures of various organs, including frog heart, pig lungs

and ox eyes.

本課程會以脊椎動物的生理結構為基礎,集中觀察幾個重要的系統,例如循環、神經與感官系統等,

進而探討不同物種怎樣透過系統與系統之間的聯繫,去適應不同的生活環境。導師亦會在課堂上進

行解剖示範(如青蛙心臟、豬肺、牛眼),讓學生可以第一身觀察器官的結構和感受器官的質感。
