Although every year is a special one, this year is clearly extraspecial. In honor of our 40th milestone, we invite you to joinus at the Gideon Putnam Hotel and Spa to recognize ourachievements as educators, the accomplishments of our stu-dents, our lessons learned, and how we can honor that tradi-tion by mapping a new and even more vibrant future. Manyof the challenges we face each day remain the same no mat-ter the decade, budget, resources, lack of rooms or deadlines,but the differences lie in how we have very creatively attackedeach. This year’s conference will find the balance that willenable us all to hear and see how our colleagues have done

this in the past, and how we intend to improve in the future.Although some things remain the same, an immenseportion of our jobs has changed because of budgets and tech-nology. Join us to learn how to imbed best practices in yourprogram and to figure out how to make the best of our exist-ing Continuing Education universe. I look forward to seeingyou there! Some say that higher education is a system on thebrink of dramatic transformation; that its mostviable, yet provocative, futures will be created as aresult of revolution from within the system or dis-ruption from the outside. Celebrating the history ofhigher education, analyzing current events and gaz-

ing into the future, this presentation explores trends and suggeststwo alternative futures that may greatly influence higher education,our institutions and our continuing education programs.

Thomas Kowalik, director of Continuing Education and Outreach atBinghamton University, provides leadership and serves as the principalacademic and administrative officer of Continuing Education andOutreach. He is a member of the International Adult and ContinuingEducation Hall of Fame, and is a past president of both the UniversityProfessional Continuing Education Association and the Coalition ofLifelong Learning Organizations. He has received numerous awardsfor leadership, program development, research and scholarship.

This workshop will introduce attendees to two quality standardsdesigned for organizational self-assessment of continuing educationand distance learning centers. Attendees will work through the self-assessment tools for their organization, develop a plan for imple-menting the tools for continuous quality improvement, and considerthe implications for benchmarking with peer organizations.

Reports from state and federal education and labor departments con-tinue to indicate a pressing need for increasing our STEM talent if weexpect the US to compete globally. This workshop will explore howcolleges can use Perkins funding to develop and implement STEM-based Continuing Education vocational programs which will con-tribute to the solution to this national problem.

3. Program Maps: Charting the “Course”Presenter: Deborah E. Reid, Director, Hostos Community College

This presentation will use the Allied Health Career Pipeline Programto assist you with understanding how to design program maps thatillustrate all of the major program components and their inter-con-nectedness.

Those interested in increasing revenue and developing a successfulfeeder program should attend this session on English language path-ways programs. Panelists from CUNY and SUNY, community andsenior colleges, share successful strategies on curriculum develop-ment, marketing, assessment, instruction, and strengthening on-cam-pus relationships with admissions, international student services, andacademic departments.
