ENE powerpointTRANSCRIPT
An extreme natural event is an event caused by nature such a landslides, earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical cyclones, avalanches, coastal erosion, drought and tsunamis.
A natural hazard is an extreme natural event that can cause damage to people and their property. For instance the tsunami in Samoa, the earthquake in Chile and the volcanic eruption in Iceland
NATURAL HAZARD
Extreme Natural EventIs caused by nature•Landslides•Earthquake•Volcanic eruption•Tsunami (Coastal erosion and flooding)•Flood
Human use of an area•Towns and cities •Agriculture•Manufacturing•Recreation
Natural HazardDamage people and their property
EXTREME NATURAL EVENT OR NATURAL HAZARD?
If an earthquake hits the middle of the Australian desert and no one is around is it an extreme natural event or natural hazard?
If a Tsunami hits a populated coastal area killing 50 is it an extreme natural event or natural hazard?
If a volcano erupts in the middle of the ocean and know one is hurt, is this an extreme natural event or natural hazard?
THE NATURAL HAZARDS IN NEW ZEALAND?
Hazards having a human and financial impact on New Zealand are:
Landslides Earthquakes Volcanic eruptions Tsunamis Flooding
WHAT IS A LANDSLIDE HAZARD?
A landslide is the movement of rocks and/or soil down a slope under the influence of gravity
Landslides can occur naturally after rain, floods, earthquakes, volcanoes or even vibrations from thunder. They can be caused or made worse by human activity such as vegetation removal
E.g. Gisborne, King country
TSUNAMIS
A tsunami massive wave/rush of water caused by earthquake or volcanic eruption
E.g East coast and low lying areas at risk

EARTHQUAKE
Earthquakes occur on fractures, or faults, within the Earth.
There is over 15,000 earthquakes each year within the New Zealand region. For the over 250 significant earthquakes felt in the New Zealand region each year
E.g. Napier 1931http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y-62Ti5_6s&feature=related
VOLCANIC ERUPTION
Volcanoes are opening in the earths crust from which volcanic material is ejected such as ash, lava, gas and rocks.
E.g. White Island (quirky volcanic eruption)

What is a flooding hazard?
A flood is an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges low lying areas of land. • River flooding • Flooding in flat areas due to heavy rainfall New Zealand's most common Natural HazardE.g. Invercargill (Power point by Sarah Bekker)
