Tough DayAt the start of the month the annual Tough Day competition took place on a beautiful Saturday morning. Superintendent Chris Purvis set up the front nine very easy with almost all tee boxes moved up drastically. The back nine was a completely different story as the evil Purvis set hole locations on slopes near the edges of greens and tee boxes moved all the way back, even on to other holes in some cases! The field consisted of 40 two person teams that were split in to two flights. Congratulations to our Schwarzenegger Flight Winners James Hennessy and Michael Sumner and to our Stallone Flight Winners Bubba and Christy Gwyn! Also a big congratulations to our Gross Champs Trevor Harris and Mason Lutz for shooting a smooth 66! Thank you to everyone who participated this year, and we hope to see you back again next year! From the Superintendant

Usually every December is when we begin to monitor the weather to decide when it is time to cover greens. Over the past 11 years, we have learned a lot about when to cover. At the beginning

we used to cover each day it was going to be cold, but now that they have aged, I feel they can handle the weather much better than expected. We will always let greens get frosted up first. This helps in the “hardening off effect”. We now look at daytime temperatures, besides only looking at nighttime temperatures. For example, if the daytime temperatures are sunny and hi of 55 or more and that night may get down to 26, we more than likely will not cover, but if the daytime temperature mid 40’s or lower and that night is 28, we will cover. What I am trying to judge is the length of frozen time on the grass. Once we get our first frost, I begin to leave messages on the “Course Conditions Hotline”, which is 770-448-2008 ext. 3333. On that message I will say if there is a delay and if we will be covering greens that afternoon. If the day comes for us to cover greens, we begin no later than 4:00 on #1 and #10. If the proshop feels that not many people will be out to play due to the weather, they will allow us to cover earlier. The longer the grass is under the sun with the covers on it, the better chance of survival thru the winter becomes. If you have any questions, please ask.

Introducing the 2016-2017Berkeley Hills Country Club / ThanksUSA

Scholarship Recipients

Air Force dependent Meghan Duffey has received consecutive $3,000 Berkeley Hills Country Club/ThanksUSA scholarships for undergraduate studies at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.

Maintaining an impressive perfect GPA, Meghan majors in English, Creative Writing, and Mathematics with a minor in History. She plans to continue her education, earning a Master’s in Publishing and Doctorate in English. “My goal is to pursue a career as a book editor and author. As an editor, I hope to decrease the lack of diversity in the publishing industry. I believe that everyone deserves to have their voice heard and I hope to use my position to make this dream a reality. Books have the ability to help so many people, but the lack of diversity hinders this. By increasing the diversity in the publishing industry, I will be able to increase the range of people that books can impact. As an author, I hope to get my voice out in the world and write stories that change the readers' lives.” In preparation for her future career, Meghan works at the Cluster Student Newspaper and regularly submits articles to The Odyssey Online. She is a member of the Mercer University Literary Society and was named to the Tift’s Scholars Program. She hopes to intern with a publishing company next summer. “Thank you so much for supporting the continuation of my education! College is expensive, and without the support of people like you I would not have the opportunities that I do now.”

Navy dependent Sarah Burch received her second $3,000 Berkeley Hills Country Club/ThanksUSA scholarship to continue a Materials Science and Engineering major at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

After completing her undergraduate studies, Sarah plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in bio-materials and medical technology. “Georgia Tech is world renowned for its high academic rigor and their Materials Science and Engineering program is one of the top ranked in the country. Their graduates are highly prepared to take the next step to medical school and on to careers in public health or medical research. I will work hard to reach my goals because I enjoy giving back to my community and I want to make a positive impact on our society.”

To complement her studies, Sarah continues to volunteer with the Southeast Georgia Health System and Atlanta Day Shelter. She enjoys participating in the annual Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser, serves on Phi Mu Parents’ Liaison committee, and is an Outdoor Recreation instructor-in-training.

“I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation for the Berkeley Hills Country Club/ThanksUSA scholarship. With an education from Georgia Tech, I will enter a growing field where my expertise will help shape future growth in technology that will impact many areas of society.”
