marriageCongratulations to Brian and Cheryl Bloom who were married July 4, 2013.

Brian Arquilla (Seeler) golfed his best round ever at Seven Bridges in July. It was his first round ever, but who’s counting. Welcome to the dark side, Brian.

Peggy Bennett (Ele Corporation) underwent another surgery on her leg late July after being hit head on by a drunk driver in November of 2011. We wish Peggy a speedy recovery and hope to see her at events this fall.

Jill Broz (IMTT) and Cheryl De (Acid Products) just happened to be at the same sports bar the night the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup! Funny thing, they ran into each other quite often this past hockey season.

Kip Coco (Rowell Chemical) and family vacationed in Colorado to hike, bike, and be with nature. Unfortunately, the insurance policy was not paid up, so Mrs. Coco was much more patient with Kip on their 14,265 foot climb up and down Mount Quandary outside of Breckenridge. All family members made it up and down safely, despite Kip’s desire to play golf from the peak all the way down.

Karen Desmond (Philchem Inc.) and her husband Rob recently celebrated their anniversary in San Francisco and Napa. Although it rained a lot they made the best of it by drinking great wines and enjoying fine dining…not to mention the Hawks won the Stanley Cup while they were there watching the game from the only sports bar they could find in Napa.

Dawn Drass (Rowell) is very proud to announce the gradu-ation of her daughter, Katelin, from The School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University with a BS in Environmental Science, concentrating on water resources, and minors in Public Management and Biology

Barbara Laffey (Calabrian Corp) and husband, Tom, went to England to visit their son, Brent Laffey (Prinova). While they were there, Brent got engaged to Victoria Polzin (Prinova) and ran the London Marathon in 3:22. They’re looking forward to an April 2014 wedding in Montego Bay Jamaica.

Craig Lundell (Sea-Land) along with wife, Traci, spent time in London & Paris. Weather was uncharacteristically hot and sunny! Visited the Louvre, saw the Mona Lisa, the Tower of London, and the Crown Jewels. People were very friendly and they found the French mostly all spoke English. Highlight of the trip was dinner at Les Ombres, which sits on the top floor of a museum that overlooks the Eiffel Tower and the Seine River.

Jerry Maziarka (EMCO Chemical Distributors) just got back form a Kayaking trip with his family. Everyone is safe and dry.

Tim McNicholas (Arro corp) is pleased to announce that his son, Nolan, has been accepted to the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign. Nolan will start this fall and major in Mechanical Engineering. He recently graduated from Brother Rice High School with High Honors. He is also a recipient of the CD&CA Scholarship. Congratulations, Nolan!

Jerry Planek (Kraft Chemical) needs a new car as his has been in repair three times in the last month. Does anyone have a spare car Jerry can borrow?

Bill Radostits (Radchem) is pleased to announce his son, Will, graduated from the University of Iowa in May 18, 2013. Will’s goal is to work in the Secret Service or FBI. In order to prepare himself for that goal, Will was accepted into the Officer’s Training School with The United States Marine Corps and signed up for an eight year commitment. Will is also engaged to be married to Alyssa Rogers of Naperville, Illinois on August 9, 2014!

Judy Swain (Columbus Chemical) visited New York City with her mother in April for some sightseeing and mother/daughter time. While there they saw a taping of The Chew so you might see them on TV in the near future.

Esma Talu (Dow Chemical) ran her first half marathon this past May in Columbus, Ohio. After loving it, she signed up for two more half marathons this summer. Keep your eyes peeled for Esma racing through future CD&CA newsletters.

MAY GOLF AT BROKEN ARROWThanks to all who came out to our first golf outing at Broken

Arrow in Lockport. Although the weather was questionable at the beginning, it turned out to be a good day. (Of course, it’s always a good day when you get to be on the golf course instead of in the office.) The main challenge of the day was the wind, but everyone seemed to do well. We’d like to thank everyone who participated in the hole-in-two contest and congratulate the winners; Bob Staley, Pat Akers, Tim Ryniec and Bob Beck. We also held a putting contest and the winner, Lloyd Hundley, a guest, walked away with $121.

A special shout out thanks to new members Bob Beck, Mathew Jacob and John Hulsey for attending their first CD&CA golf outing.

JULY GOLF AT SEVEN BRiDGESThis year’s second outing was held at Seven Bridges Golf Club

in Woodridge and was a Best Ball Peoria Handicap The weather was perfect, course pristine, golf challenging and

food and drink outstanding. A great time was had by all who attended (a better time had by the winners from what some of us noticed). For those of you who weren’t able to attend, please try to next year; this was one of the best golf events the CD&CA has hosted in a few years.

A special shout out thanks to new member Bryce Vander Ark for attending their first CD&CA golf outing.•1st Place Winning Team: Kip Coco, Eric Dugenske, John Gosser

BOB ARQUiLLAI was very pleased when

my Dad told me that he was a candidate for a Legends arti-cle in the Chicago Drug and Chemical newsletter. I, like any of my siblings, welcomed the chance to write a little about our Dad through the years.

What makes someone a legend? Is it simply the fact that the person has survived a certain number of years in an ever changing industry? While that may be true for some, in the case of Bob Arquilla, he has not only survived but persevered and excelled in this industry for more than four decades, gaining not only the respect of his colleagues but lifelong friendships along the way.

Bob is the epitome of a self-made man. He was born and spent the majority of his younger years on the West side of Chicago, as his father did before him. He also spent a fair amount of time in England, the native country of his mother who lives there today. As a young man he traveled with her between the countries on Ocean Liners, alternating between schools here in the

States and boarding schools across the pond. Finally, when he was 12 it was decided that as he was an American, he should grow up in America.

There aren’t many high schoolers’ who work full time jobs. But, while still a Senior in high school, Bob (who loved writing), soon found himself working as a 3rd shift Copy Boy for the Chicago’s American newspaper. Soon after, he was promoted to Jr. Editor and was learning to edit newspaper stories as well as writing eye catching headlines. Of course, he had to leave the office in Tribune Tower a little early to make it to his first class on time! Because of his way with words, his mentor JonRae Earl a Chief Copy Editor saw in him a natural salesman and urged Bob to pursue a career in sales.

In 1968, as the freewheel-ing 1960’s were coming to a close, Bob found himself in a new career in the purchasing department at the Richardson Company in Melrose Park. He did well there, apart from a small blip in which gloves that he purchased for an out of state facility, a so-called “great deal”,

ended up not being so great. They caused the Union at the plant to declare that the gloves were of poor quality and they shut down for a time. It was a lesson learned and it taught Bob that if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

Bob met Jim Flood of Joseph Turner & Co. (a legend in his own right) while at Richardson and worked well with him from the start. When Bob learned of a sales opening at Joseph Turner, he convinced both Jim and the owner, Bob Merrill, to take a chance on him. It’s fair to say that they made the right decision as Bob spent the next twenty-eight years at JT&Co. Bob rose in the ranks & JT&Co., becoming an Assistant Manager in 1981 and Sales Manager in 1994 after Jim Flood’s untimely passing. Bob stayed on when JT&Co was acquired by C.P Hall Co. in 1998. They eventually parted ways, though Bob soon found a new home at LA Chemicals where he continues to work today. It was a challenge as LA was involved in a number of markets with products he had never previously sold. Perhaps

after working at LA for over 11 years he has passed the proba-tionary period of employment.

They say if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life and while the job was often challenging, particularly in the early days when Chicago was a crowded market, he learned his job and strategies well from Mr. Flood. He was connecting with the people he was selling to and many of those customers became dear friends. In this way, Bob has always loved the work he does. With the help of his mentor, Jim Flood, Bob honed his sales skills. Jim often gave Bob articles on sales meth-ods, which may have grown a little tiresome for Bob. At a Manufacturer’s out of town dinner, seated with Jim and the JT&Co owner as well as reps of the hosting company, Bob famously opened his suit coat to reveal a large carrot, leaves & all. This was definitely unusual, and when asked about it, Bob referenced an article from Jim which instructed salesmen to do something memorable. He certainly accomplished

that with the carrot. Not surprisingly, that was the last sales training article Bob ever received from Jim!

Early on, Jim taught Bob the importance of being involved in many aspects of the chemi-cal industry. Bob certainly has been! He first became a member of the Chicago Perfumery Assn. in 1971 after being invited to join by the late Larry Noonan, who introduced him to many of the folks who were involved with the “Stinkers” as they were known. He served on many committees throughout the years and became President in 1993. It was through the CD&CA which Bob joined in 1981 that he has made some of his closest friends, including the late Bill Vervoort. If you know Bob at all, you know he is always ready with a (usually terrible), joke which he shares at every opportunity. Though most people groan at his humor, his jokes are almost always repeated later on! One of his proudest moments occurred the year that

Bob became CD&CA President in 2002. At a Former President’s luncheon attended not only by previous presidents, but also the outgoing and incoming Board of Directors. Everyone is encour-aged to get acquainted and to tell a story of some sort. When his turn came, Bob welcomed everyone and said he was pleased to have a joke to tell. The silence was deafening until everyone in the room rose from their chair and hurriedly headed toward an exit. Bob was so proud that even though he never got to tell a story, his reputation had preceded him! Over the years, CD&CA has provided many happy memories for Bob who continues to help whenever called upon.

If you know Bob, you’ll know that nothing is more impor-tant to him than family. Not long after starting his job with JT&Co, Bob met his future wife Barbara. Forty-one years of marriage, four grown children, and a gaggle of grandsons later, you could say that Bob has

been a success in his personal life as well.

Interestingly, Bob’s three daughters are all in sales them-selves and his son Brian follows even more closely in Bob’s foot-steps as he is also in chemical sales. His children will tell you that he is an amazing father, and while he has certainly mentored others within the industry, as his children, they have had the privilege of seeing firsthand what “Great” looks like when it comes to success in sales and in life. Through his example, he taught them to work hard and with integrity,

to enjoy your work and make it fun, to always follow through on the things you commit to, to make someone else’s day whenever possible, and perhaps most importantly, to always have a joke ready to tell when the moment is right! He has also taught them to never give up, which for Bob has been exemplified in the fact that he is a lifelong Cubs fan!

Bob Arquilla, who I am honored to call my father, is a legend both personally and professionally and is loved and respected by all who know him.

– Valerie (Arquilla) Karpeck
