Explore 'Freedom' duringlibrary's film exhibition

The Gilder Lehman Institute ofAmerican History's national tour-ing panel exhibition, "Freedom: AHistory of US" will be exhibited inthe Donald B. Palmer Museum ofSpringfield Free Public Librarythrough July 23.

The exhibition centers on theconcept of freedom and its interpre-tation throughout American history,from such disparate voices as thefounding fathers, Abraham Lin-

coln, Frederick Douglass, Susan B.Anthony and Martin Luther KingJr.

The films will be screened onfour dates and discussion will befacilitated by Mary Cokeing fromJonathan Dayton High School. Thefilms will be shown at 7 p.m.

The next film will be July 6, andwill be "A Fatal Contradiction, AWar to End Slavery, What is Free-dom, and Whose Land is This?"

CDC 2010-11 season ends withred carpet awards, new officers

The Cranford Dramatic Club celebrated the closeof the 2010-11 season of presenting live theater inUnion County with a look back at its 91 st season anda look ahead to the future.

At its closing meeting last month. CDC Communi-ty Theatre gave awards to this year's shows, electedits officers and announced the shows for 2011-12.

Emulating the tamed Tony Awards for Broadway,CDC began "The First Annual Helen West Awards"with a welcoming red carpet and some remarks look-ing back on the season by member Joel Redmount.who served as the master of ceremonies.

Awards, named for the founding president of thetheater in 1919 and voted on by the entire member-ship, were presented to: Outstanding Production,"Gypsy"; Outstanding Technical Production, "MoonOver Buffalo" and Outstanding Artistic Production,"Moon Over Buffalo." Individual awards were givento: Outstanding Lead Actor, Jonathan Fishman in"Moon Over Buffalo" who tied with Robert Mack-asek for his role in "Gypsy"; Outstanding LeadActress, Julie Stiehl in "Gypsy"; Outstanding Sup-porting Actor, John Sechrist in "Gypsy"; and Out-standing Supporting Actress, Carla Kendall for"Gypsy."

Turning attention to the often unsung heroes of theensemble, CDC presented awards to Outstanding Fea-tured Ensemble members Raven Dunbar and JohnDuryee for their roles in "Gypsy"; Outstanding YouthActor, Zach Love in "Stuart Little"; and OutstandingYouth Actress, Emmanuelle Nadeau, also in "StuartLittle."

Looking ahead, CDC also announced its 2011-12

schedule. Opening the 92nd season is the classic fam-ily musical "Oliver." Featuring well known songs byLionel Bart, such as "Consider Yourself and "Whereis Love," the show will run Nov. 4 to 19. A murder-mystery, "The Mousetrap," by famed British authorAgatha Christie, will run Feb. 10 to Feb. 25, 2012.This show has the distinction of being the longest run-ning drama in history, having opened in London in1952 and is still running there. The CDC season willend with the poignant musical "Carousel," by thebeloved team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The fol-low-up to their popular "Oklahoma." that gave theworld the hit "You'll Never Walk Alone." Shows atCDC are supported in part by Union County Culturaland Heritage Affairs.

The theater group also voted for its new officers.Jennifer Love was re-elected president for a secondterm; Michael Miguel was elected to a first term asbusiness vice president, as was Becky Randazzo, asproduction vice president. Membership will bechaired by Judi Chandler. The new recording secre-tary is Leslie Ricci; the corresponding secretary isMelissa Timpson. The treasurer will be Joel Red-mount. In addition to its officers, CDC has a Board ofGovernors which oversees production concerns. Theywill include: Bill Chamis, David Frey, Liz Howard,Mark Douches, John Duryee and Mary Webb.

President Jen Love thanked the outgoing officersand board members for their service and congratulatedthe winners of the first annual "Helen West" Awards.
