CDA Trustees wanted

CDA’s Trust Board is currently looking to recruit some new Trustees. If you feel you

can offer something to support us voluntarily and help us to continue building our

work within the Deaf Community in Cambridgeshire (including Peterborough). If you

are, then please do let us know and we will be very happy to follow this up. Please contact [email protected] and we will forward it to the Trustees of the

Board.

Goodbye Roma

Roma Parrick, a popular BSL Interpreter in our

region, recently moved away. We wanted to give her a proper goodbye and we held a collection. We gave

Roma some Boots vouchers and a card as she left our

area to move to the south of England. On behalf of all readers, we wish Roma the best of luck for the future and we are sure she will settle

down well.

What have they been up to?

Recently, the girls from

Supporting Deaf People were busy clearing out

a lot of things in CDA’s

old office

(between the two main

halls). They

have now

made the room into a

meeting room

or a private

room for one

to one meetings. They also managed to tidy up the

CDA car park & courtyard by removing all

the weeds. A big thank you to all three lassies!

MARCH DEAF CLUB. On Friday 9th April we had our AGM, which was very successful and John Uren was

co-opted on to the committee. The meeting did not last long and finished at 8.55pm. Afterwards we had a chat. We played Dominoes (3 and 5 Knock-Outs) on Friday 7th

May; there were 10 players and nearly 2 hours playing. Kathleen Gilbert was the

winner.

The weather was hot at last and 36 people came to club on Friday 4th June, Frank East brought a new game called Hoy Bingo, with 3 games and 3 prizes. We would

like to say thanks Frank.

50 people came to the sausage and mash Supper (see photo on left) on Friday 2nd

July 2010. The hall was hot because the weather was warm so I brought a fan to

keep the hall cool. The food was fantastic and wonderfully prepared and served. Thanks to Michael Pape, Catherine Palmer, Alison Frisby, Christine Tarrant and Nigel

Frisby (see photo on right), also Kathleen Gilbert (not pictured). Lots of people said

the sausages were very good and wondered where they came from. The sausages

came from my local butcher’s, which is Betts on Station Road, March.

It is with great sadness that we learned Aubrey Bradshaw passed away on the 25th

May. Aubrey was a member of MDDC for many years and was popular throughout.

Our thoughts are with his partner, Gillian Richardson.

SUPPORTING DEAF PEOPLE PROJECT update July 2010 The Project has been busy over the last few months and the

team is nicely established in the CDA. We have made the ‘old’

office into a meeting room etc which will be very useful for us

as a team and also for other purposes connected with the CDA.

We have also changed our own office around to give us more space and to make the room more Deaf friendly.

Just a reminder that we work with D/deaf, hard of hearing,

deafened, deaf/blind people living in Cambridgeshire and we aim to ensure that people are enabled to live as independently as possible. We can

help with things like dealing with day to day issues, budgeting, help with

correspondence, developing social skills etc. One of the workers is usually

available at the drop in sessions across the County.

Please contact me if you would like to make a referral or discuss your needs any

further.

The team is: Mary Godden (Coordinator) Helen Money and Sally Skeldon (Support Workers) and are here for you!

Cambridge Deaf Lunchtime Group The average attendance for the last three months was 18 people. We

raised about £20 per month from raffle which was good. It was good to

see Deaf people meeting each others for get together chat with tea/coffee etc. A

big thank you to Linda for doing the raffle and also those who helped to do the washing up and tidied the room afterwards to make way for the Level Two BSL

course later the day. Every little help make a lot of difference. A million thanks JAMIE BILLAM

Fenland Deaf Drop-in On 29th April, a good crowd of 21 people turned up at Deaf Drop-in and we had

some quite good raffle prizes. On 20th May my two old School friends Peter and

Anne Ross from East Croydon, London visited. They enjoyed talking with our Deaf

people. Hopefully they will come back again. On 17th June, a very warm day, everybody turned up wearing Summer clothes at last. MICHAEL PAPE

Peterborough Deaf Drop in We have had people coming in to give us talks recently. Sue Billam gave a talk about Our Voice. It was very useful as we learnt how Our Voice can help us. Sue

Foulstone gave a talk about M.E., a medical condition that she suffers with. This

was helpful to listen to Sue Foulstone about her health and what she is like when

she has bad days. Liz Jones, from Social Services, gave us a talk about how Social Services can help D/deaf people. We have also had a visit from Andy

Palmer and his work colleague. They work for RNID and were visiting the Deaf

Drop In and bought some information with them about RNID.

We arranged a day out to Ferry Meadows. The weather was fantastic!! It was

great to see so many there (I think there was about 25 people). A few people

came by bus, but the bus driver didn’t tell them where to get off for Ferry

Meadows so they ended up going a bit further than they should have done! Glenn showed his photos of himself making a chest of drawers in a woodwork class. His

friends at the Drop In were very impressed. Glenn was very proud. It was a

lovely afternoon, we had picnics and signed for most of the afternoon! A few of us

had a boat trip on the lake.

The Deaf Drop In in Peterborough still sees a lot of people coming. Some people

ask Debbie or Sue for help with paperwork, etc., and Elaine is kept very busy on

the phone. Sally Clelland, from Social Services, is also there nearly every week to

assist clients with things that take longer than a Drop In session to sort out, e.g. benefit issues. Astrid Orme from Our Voice also tries her best to be at the Drop-In

as often as possible'.

Page 8: CDA Summer 2010

Peterborough Deaf Drop in(Con’t)

Privacy is very important at the Deaf Drop In. When Debbie/Sue/Elaine are

behind the green screens with a client, please DO NOT interrupt or watch the conversation.

As we have a lot of people waiting to see Debbie or Sue, from July, there will be a

number system, where you pick up a number so that we know who is next in the

queue, this will be like taking a ticket at the Post Office or the shoe shop or even the Doctors. There will also be a time limit for each client which will be a

maximum of 15 minutes each so that we can see everyone more quickly. Please

be patient, Debbie and Sue will get round to you. If your query will take more

than 15 minutes, Debbie and Sue will get back to you. If your problem needs more time than we can give you, your case will be referred to Sally Support

Worker for Social Services or Astrid, Our Voice Advocate for Deaf People.

Haven’t we had some lovely weather recently? Maybe a bit too warm for some of you but let’s hope the nice weather continues for the rest of the summer. We

hope you have a lovely summer, whether you are staying at home or going away.

The Deaf Drop In will still be open in August, so pop in and see us. If you have

any photos from your holiday or day trips, bring them in.

Editors News

At last we are enjoying good weather and let us hope this will last the whole of the summer period. I hope you all have a good holiday whatever you are planning to

do. By the time you receive this Newsletter, the World Cup fever will be over and

it was a pity that England were beaten by the Germans! I think we expect too

much of the England players and we have to remember they are only human, never mind how well they are paid!

As you can see on the front page of this addition of the Newsletter, Mary, Sally

and Helen put in a lot of effort to clear away the rubbish and sorting out a room

which will be use as a meeting room or for private one to one meetings. This goes

to show how much effort they have put in for the sake of our Deaf Community and CDA. Well done lassies.

Also Mary and Sally are organising a new CDA social evening on Friday July 23rd

(see the poster elsewhere in the newsletter) Do come along and enjoy the social

gathering. We are very sorry to hear the sad news of Aurbrey Bradshaw who passed away

recently. More information will be included in the next newsletter. He was a lovely

and happy man. He usually teased me that I am his doctor as he always thought I

looked like him!! Our new website is still not ready yet but it will be very soon.

If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a CDA Trustee and getting

involved, then please do let us know. Email address is at the bottom of the front

PALS Recently I have had a problem with my local audiology department (Hinchingbrook Hospital)…there was a disagreement between myself and reception

as to what time my appointment was. I arrived early for what I understood was a

twelve noon appointment, but they had one PM on their computer. I had to be

somewhere else at one PM, so once I had found this out I had to leave quickly. I contacted the hospital PALS service, and we have resolved my problem. The

answer is a little advertised free service. If you sign a consent form they will

send a text reminder of ALL appointments that are arranged by the hospital to

your mobile phone.

You have to agree to tell them if you lose your mobile, or change the number. You have to agree that if your lose it, or it was stolen, then other people could find

out what appointments you had arranged (and remember it is ALL appointments,

and that could include ones to clinics that may not want anyone else to know

about. Still I think this service is a good way to make sure that someone with a hearing

loss knows for sure what time there appointment is…and if your as forgetful as I

am then a reminder is a bonus.

If your would like this service I suggest you contact the PALS service of your hospital. MIKE SEARLE

Deaf & Hearing Clubs (Huntingdon and Cambridge) Both Huntingdon & Cambridge Deaf & Hearing club continue to do well with good attendance. At the Cambridge one, we had really enjoyable sessions including

‘Bingo’ organised by Colin Garner (Deaf). He was really funny and he made

everybody laugh. He is the perfect D/deaf person for all hearing people who were

trying to polish up their signing skills! Cambridge is now closed till September. At Huntingdon, it will be open every month except August. One of the sessions we

had was a ‘Quiz’ competition to mark the 5th anniversary last May. Here are

examples of some of the questions we used. 1) How many different people have

attended the Huntingdon club since it began? 2) What was the number of the

highest attended meeting? 3) What was the number of the lowest attended meeting? 4) How many Deaf and how many Hearing people attend the club? 5)

How many people called ‘Smith’ have attended the meetings? Answer will be in

the next newsletter.

Again, our big thanks to all who have taken part in making tea/coffee etc., and also for organising the games which everyone enjoys.

Please see page two of the newsletter with the information of both Huntingdon

and Cambridge Deaf & Hearing clubs. Everyone Deaf or Hearing who is involved or

interested in the Deaf Community is very welcome especially students attending BSL courses. JAMIE BILLAM
