Table S2. Quantitative and qualitative variables used in the morphological analysis.
Quantitative variables were body weight (W, in gr), head and body length (Lb, in mm), hind foot length (Lpp, in
mm), tail length (Lt, in mm) and spine length (Lp, in mm). Qualitative variables included the coloration of the
spines (black and white, Cpblw; brown and beige, Cpbrb) and of the body (black and white, Cbblw; beige, Cbb;
brown, Cbbr; black and white with patches, Cbblws), and the size (small, Ses; large, Sel) and shape (round, Sher;
pointy, Shep) of the ears.

Fig. S1. Two-dimensional scatter plot depicting morphological relationships among hedgehog individuals as
estimated by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination on a matrix of pairwise Gower distances.
Stress value was equal to 0.19. The distribution of the discrete morphological groups is represented by bivariate
95% concentration ellipses.

Fig. S2. Condensed UPGMA tree based on Gower distances between hedgehog individuals for the
morphological characters analysed. Numbers above branches indicate the percentage of bootstraps (cut-off value
of 50%) based on 1000 replicates. The three main clusters in the tree correspond to Paraechinus aethiopicus and
to the two morphotypes identified within Atelerix algirus.
