The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

Although the “Shopper” has been published for 24 years, I have now been the proud owner since April of 2010 – three and a half years. It’s a second career for

me and I love it! It is, however, a good bit more involved than I realized. When I was 13, I delivered 100 papers each after-noon from my Sears Allstate 125 motor scooter. I thought I was working hard but never thought about what the publisher had to go through to produce that “Afternoon Rag”. Without powerful computers, a great staff and a lot of help from the United States Postal Service, we couldn’t do it. Let’s look at the numbers.

Shopper

The Coweta Shopper has gone to press 1,248 times in as many weeks since 1989. You can wrap a whole lot of fish with that. We now direct mail every home and business in the county in a three week weekly rotation. So in that three week period, we must create, layout and organize between 75 and 80 separate pages of advertising and editorial. Over 50,000 cop-ies containing 1.2 million pages are printed, and delivered by truck to the 4 post offices in our area, and it takes 74 mail carriers in 74 vehicles to deliver the Shopper each Wednesday. Dur-ing my time at the helm, we have helped almost 600 businesses tell you about their product or service through our “direct to your mailbox” ap-

proach, with absolutely no cost to the reader. And if that’s not enough, at the end of that three week period of time you can line over a quarter million bird cages. (Assuming a double fold for longevity) That’s a lot of foul!

Anyway, it seems I’ve come a long way since my “paper boy” days. And thanks to the postal service, we don’t have to lick 50,100 stamps every three weeks or try to deliver our pa-pers on a Sears Roebuck motor scooter. But I’m most thankful for our small group of talented employees who work hard to make it happen.

You would think that, having spent all this time and money, we would just take the cheap way out and be on the internet. WE ARE. So if you’re skiing in the Alps, vacationing in the South of France, or hiking the Appalachian Trail, and are “perishing to death” to read this weeks Coweta Shopper, just enter www.thecowetashopper.com and view the entire pa-per.

JoePost Script: The above numbers seem large to me and The Coweta Shopper is just a week-ly publication. Coweta’s local newspaper, The Times-Herald, does an outstanding job of covering the news, and they do it 5 times a week. My hat is off to them. (But I still think the Shopper makes a superior bird cage liner!!!)

ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers Needed

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based pro-gram provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

For Michael Reams, a morning cup of cof-fee is more than just a hot drink to get the day started. It’s the Life Blood of families trying to make a living in coffee producing communities in South and Central America.

One such community, Oaxaca, is one of the most lush and fertile coffee-producing regions of Mexico, and has a special place in Michael’s heart. It’s where his wife grew up.

Years later Michael and Camila made their fi rst “family trip” back to Oaxaca where he met Camila’s mother. “She served me the best cup of coffee I had ever tasted”, say’s Michael. After seeing the coffee fi elds and hear-ing about the diffi culties of making a living from it, they knew this land had great potential. Mike began researching coffee and business, looking for an opportunity to serve the coffee farmers there and even-tually founded “Fire Mountain Cof-fee”, to give these people full value for their efforts by importing their product in a direct-trade relation-ship. ‘It’s like a ministry to us, a dream come true, and we want to spend the rest of our lives invested in it and being a part of Coweta’s business community”.

Fire Mountain’s coffees are deli-cious hand crafted beans sourced from Central and South America, Oceana and, soon to be added, Africa. For more information, or how to obtain this delicious coffee, contact Mi-chael and Camila Reams at fi [email protected]

E very November a mouse nds its way into my house. I think it might be the

same mouse coming back to torture me year a er year. e routine is so familiar; it starts out as a phantom shadow I catch in my peripheral vision. My husband insists that it’s my imagination, but I know be er. I hear it scurrying about behind closed cabinets and I’m sure it’s a ma er of time before he reveals himself.

is year it didn’t take long. I was si ing in my Archie Bunker chair watching TV when all of a sudden it ran alongside the replace. Now there are a lot of stereotypes that I don’t believe in, but I am proof that there is truth to the ‘screaming housewife who just spied a mouse’ stereotype. I didn’t jump up on a chair or chase it around the house with a broom, but I did scream so loud that even the mouse paused to look at me like I was crazy.

“What’s wrong, are you okay?” my husband asked as he ran into the livingroom.

“It’s that mouse, I just saw him!” My husband let out a groan and rolled his eyes. I unfolded my legs (okay, so I did pull them up), regaining my composure.

“Richard, I know what you’re thinking, but there is a mouse in here and it’s huge.”

“Huge like the tarantula you saw in the bathroom last month?”

“ at spider was so big it had hair,” I said defensively.

“Kelli, daddy long-legged spiders don’t have hair.”

I could see that I was on my own. I set out to rst prove that there was indeed a mouse in our house. I retrieved the camera, climbed into my safety chair and waited. ree days, two rolls of lm and eight crackers later I had my photo. I think the mouse was laughing at me. I pictured him behind the wall lounging on his li le mouse furniture, nibbling a stolen Ritz cracker, telling the others about his heroic adventures. “You should have seen her crouched over with a camera in one hand and a cup in the other,” he’d be saying, “like I was going to fall for the

old cracker in the cup trick.” I saw the other mice laughing as he paused dramatically to take a bite of the Ritz. “Besides, every time I ran out she just dropped everything and ran screaming; humans are a riot.”

Now I had my proof and that was step one of the extermination process. I rushed the two rolls of lm to Eckerd Drugs and waited for the one-hour processing, certain that I had numerous angles of my prey. Nevermind that the girl at the photo lab will think my house is infested with rodents. In fact, if she has a good memory she will recall the pictures she recently developed of my toddler si ing on the livingroom oor surrounded by Cheerios. I now refer to those photos as Exhibit A when I explain the mouse problem to my children.

My three-year-old, much like my husband, does not grasp the severity of the situation. I see a rodent and she sees Stuart Li le. She is puzzled as to why I scream every time I see it.

“You don’t do that at the pet store, Mommy,” she said.

“Yeah Mommy,” my husband added.

“ is is di erent honey,” I said, “this is a wild mouse.” And while deep down I know this is a ridiculous explanation, I stand rm. I’m not afraid of monkeys at the zoo, but if one crawled out from behind my bookcase I guarantee I would scream like a banshee.

Once I had my snapshot at least everyone believed me about the mouse. e community must have found out about it because people keep dropping stray cats at my house late at night. How kind.

My husband captured the mouse a er one quick trip to Home Depot. e contraption was really not much di erent than my cracker in the cup trick – minus all the screaming. So, he lives out in the back woods now, at least until next year when we meet again.

“ ank you,” I said to my husband “I can rest easier now, but we do have one other problem - there are seven stray cats outside and honey… they are huge.”

“Listerine and Grits”

Southern Summer has swayed in — intoxicating with her sultry perfume of tea olive, iris, peonies, confederate jasmine, roses and honeysuckle. Soon magnolia and mimosa will blend with ginger lilies and banana shrub to further intoxicte and woo us into blissful sleep on hot summer nights.

Meanwhile, out in the garden, I’ve been grooming my plants and ‘gritsing’ the ants. This is where the Listerine (original type) comes in — as a disinfectant for clippers. Use this mouthwash instead of clorox (which can ruin clothes) or rubbing alcohol. It can also be used in flower arrangements to help keep the wa-ter fresh. As for the grits, my granddaughter Anna first told me about this several years ago. When the weather is going to be dry for several days, sprinkle the ant hill liberally with dry, uncooked

grits (do not wet). The idea is that the ants will eat the dry grits,

drink water, and then explode — a school boy’s dream ex-periment! I’ve used this method a number of times on the patio where I don’t want to walk on poison. It does help; and it’s certainly less difficult and dangerous than boiling water or a blow torch. [We’re not known as Steel Magno-lias for nothing].

There are many home remedies that are non-toxic or less harmful. A good spray of water can remove aphids. Lem-

on-scented dish soap mixed with water makes a good bug spray. Plant garlic, marigolds and onions to repel rabbits, deer, and insects. Plant marigolds for nematodes. Spread lime around plants for slugs and cutworms. Corn borers do not like geraniums or marigolds. Repel moths with sage and santolina. The cabbage butterfly dislikes rosemary. When a stronger method is necessary use pyrethrum. Try non-toxic methods first to protect the environment.

Checking brake uid is another one of those car owner tasks that is pre y simple. All you need to do is verify that there is enough brake uid in the reservoir and, if not, take your car to your mechanic for xing.

All road vehicles have had hydraulic brake systems for decades. at entails a reservoir, a system that generates extremely high pres-sure when you step on the brake pedal, a power assist system and an actuation system at each wheel. In the past few years power brakes have become standard. In recent years such things as Antilock Braking Sys-tems (ABS) have also become standard, rst on two wheels and now on all four.

Anyway, all hydraulic brake systems need a su cient amount of special brake uid in order to do their critical job of stopping the car when you need it to stop and within the calculated stopping distance which is based on your speed. ere are many fac-tors which e ect stopping distance, such as the tire contact patch, the compounds used for the braking material on your brake pads or brake shoes, the condition and amount of material le on those pads or shoes, the con-dition of the metal parts of the braking sys-tem such as drums and rotors, and even the tires themselves. All braking systems work by converting mechanical, rotational motion to heat, so there are many variables involved in keeping your braking system up to accept-able standards. It is not a system you want to mess around with. Remember our discus-sions about expected performance, respon-sibility, and 4000 pound weapons on wheels. Stopping is more important than going fast. ink about that!

Checking your brake uid level is rela-tively simple. Pull out that Owner’s Manual again to help locate where the brake uid reservoir is and what it looks like. It will probably be an opaque plastic reservoir with a bright yellow cap a ached to the rewall

CAR CARE ESSENTIALSSTOP! Check YourCar’s Brake Fluid …

in the engine compartment just forward of the brake pedals. It usually is also a ached to a large black metal container that is the vacuum booster for the power steering sys-tem. Because the cap is vented, very o en a small amount of uid will leak out and that the white opaque plastic and the bright yel-low cap may be coated with sticky dirt, dust, and grime. Clean it o with that essential rag and then keep it clean. It will probably have min and max level indicators molded into the side so you can see at a glance whether you are OK or not.

ere are a whole slew of di erent kinds of brake uids with di erent performance char-acteristics and price ranges. Some will eat paint like it was acid. Others will tingle your ngers. You NEVER want to use anything but what the car manufacturer speci es and NEVER mix types. To change from DOT 3 to synthetic DOT 5, for instance, involves a complete system ush and pressure test by a brake expert. at’s why there are so many brake shops around – it’s important, critical, highly skilled, and expensive work.

So, if you are su ciently intimidated, limit yourself to simply knowing how to check brake uid level so you know when to turn your vehicle over to an expert.

Gary Sikes

Publisher’s note: Gary Sikes has been a leading sports authority in Coweta County for as long as I can remember. He previously published a sports magazine and has wri en many interesting articles and hosted a sports show on TV. Gary is in the process of launching a new sports web site covering local, collage and professional sports which can be found at www.mvpsportsandmore.com. We welcome Gary as a contrib-utor to e Coweta Shopper.

Coming up on his 4th year as the head coach of the Northgate Vikings, head coach Tommy Walburn is cau-tiously optimistic about the Fall cam-paign. e veteran coach has taken the Vikings to the state post-season games 2 of the 3 completed seasons and is look-ing to be in the hunt for 1 of the spots again this Fall. He holds the best record so far for play-o appearances for the Vikings. In talking with Walburn one gets the feeling that the Vikings just may be a tad be er than he wants everyone to think. “I think we will miss the players we lost to graduation more on the defen-sive side of the ball” he remarks during the time we talked “losing the size and ability hurts anytime”. (One of the play-ers signed with the University of Geor-gia and the other made a commitment and signed to join and play for the Navy. ese players are hard to replace year a er year at the high school level. Wal-burn goes on to say that he is pleased with the leadership of his seniors so far in ge ing ready for the upcoming Summer work-outs. ey are encour-aging the underclassmen to be positive and to work hard in the weight room, knowing that the work they are able to get in before this Fall will mean a lot to the success of the football team when the season nally gets here (which will be sooner than you think). e head coaching job at Northgate high school in Coweta county Georgia at one point was not the place to be. Being a fairly new school and viewed as having very few athletes a head coach would think it hard to win at a school like the Coweta school of Northgate. However coach Walburn has turned this view com-pletely around 180 degrees. Sending

students to major colleges each year and this last year’s team having 2 division one signees did absolutely nothing to hurt the Vikings reputation as the place to play football. Walburn gives credit to his coaching sta and the work ethic they in-still in the young men. “We stress discipline and hard work both in football and the class room”. is fact was evidenced by the signing of one of the 2012 team mem-bers to the Naval academy. e academy will not lower the entrance requirements, therefore the player who is recruited and then accepted is not a stranger to hard work. Tommy is excited about the future of football at Northgate and is pleased with the progress they have made so far. “We have made some good progress over the last couple of years and most of it is due to the hard work of our coaching sta .” is is typical Tommy Walburn, humble, and most of the time giving most of the suc-cess to someone else and shouldering the blames himself. Having known him for some 25 years or so I am proud to call him friend and wish him every suc-cess during his tenure at Northgate high school. In our next issue we are going to highlight some of the players from in and around the Coweta county, Georgia area who have gone on to play college football and maybe keep track of where they are now and what they are doing. Until then, God Bless.

DEAR CONFUSED: Th ere’s a bit of controversy right now about how to treat dogs that test positive for Lyme disease. Th is disease, transmitt ed by ticks, is very widespread in the northeastern United States. In fact, the MSPCA reports that 50 percent to 75 percent of dogs tested in New England may be positive for Lyme dis-ease.

Despite this high number, only about 10 percent of dogs that test positive develop “clinical ill-

ness” -- with symptoms like lethargy, fever, lameness and enlarged lymph nodes, ac-cording to Dr. Erika de Papp. So, there is much discussion about whether all

positive dogs should be treated for the ill-ness, or just those in which the disease is

“active.”

Because Barley tested positive for the disease, fi nd out if the vet conducted a sec-ond test to fi nd out if it’s active or was recently contracted. Whether he did so or not, ask the vet why your pet does not need treatment, or if he will in the future.

As Barley’s owner, you can also get a second opinion from another vet, if you’re un-certain or unhappy with the fi rst answer. And, for more details on this controversy, visit the MSPCA site.
