Welcome Message Welcome to the 2020 CCS Honors Concert. On behalf of the CMEA Central Coast Section Board of Directors, congratulations to the top young musicians from four counties - Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz, who perform today and to those who made the extraordinary effort to audition for these high caliber ensembles. Our Honors Concerts are the largest events we produce annually, building cohesion of pedagogy in the art form and establishing a high standard for music education within our section. Students are able to expand their study of music with the support of their communities, families, teachers and school administrators by auditioning or participating in this event. Thank you for valuing arts education by supporting a young person’s journey to this stage. Each note represents the hard work and dedication of the student musicians as well as the people behind them who help see potential and value in this life long skill that preserves culture and tradition. The guest conductors have selected and prepared some challenging and engaging repertoire while winning the respect and hearts of our Central Coast students and educators. Our students have built new connections with peer musicians and have grown as young adults while preparing for

this event -- all in less than 48 hours! Thorough preparation by the conductors and teachers, and diligent work done by the students combine to bring an extra sense of refinement to the concert. If you agree, thank an administrator for keeping music in our schools, and thank a teacher for supporting the professional

membership of CMEA/NAfME. Today’s concert is being digitally recorded and will be available for purchase. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to obtain a professional recording that preserves and documents this accomplishment for your student musician and family. Ordering information can be found on the back page of this program. Please plan to enjoy the entire concert. Concert etiquette and respect for the musicians asks that you silence all electronics, escort distressed children to the lobby, and use flash photography only between pieces. It is also requested that, if necessary, you enter or exit only between performances. Thank you for supporting a truly balanced curriculum for your student that includes music education. Enjoy the concert! Best Regards, Maria Carney, President

High School Honor Orchestra Conductor

Ryan Murray is currently the Associate Conductor of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Artistic Director & Conductor of Music in the Mountains. An award-winning opera conductor, Ryan spent his early career working as an assistant conductor and répétiteur, and is currently the Music Director of Opera Modesto. Ryan also currently directs the orchestra and opera at California State University, Sacramento, and has recently been selected as the new conductor for the Sacramento Youth Symphony’s Premier Orchestra. He is the past Music Director of Fresno Grand Opera, and previously worked as a staff conductor for the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute (BASOTI) and The Opera Academy of California in San Francisco. Effortlessly moving between genres, Ryan currently enjoys a wide range of performance genres & platforms, including traditional orchestral and operatic repertoire, pops

performances, movies in concert, and a notable emphasis on contemporary American operatic works. As the Associate Conductor of the Modesto Symphony, Ryan has overseen a nearly five-fold increase in audience attendance for the Modesto Symphony's education concerts since 2014. As the Music Director of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra, Ryan has consistently worked to improve the quality, skill and prominence of the youth orchestra; with a passion for education and a remarkable flair for program building, he now oversees a program that features over 120 students from the greater Modesto area. Ryan is a past winner of the Vienna Philharmonic’s prestigious Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors, and spent the summer in residence alongside the Vienna Philharmonic at the 2014 Salzburg Festival. Ryan has recently garnered national recognition for his dynamic, compelling performances of contemporary opera and was the winner of the 2017 American Prize in Opera Conducting for his highly lauded production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He was also a 2016 semi-finalist for the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music for his production of Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking. A charismatic pops conductor, Ryan has worked with prominent artists such as Storm Large of Pink Martini, SuperDiamond and the phenomenal symphonic tribute to David Bowie. He has led some of the top vocalists from Broadway and beyond, including Ben Crawford (Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera), Ashley Brown (Broadway's Mary Poppins), and Alli Mauzey (Glinda from Wicked), as well as some of today's top young jazz vocalists including Tony DeSare and James Tormé. With an enthusiasm for film scores, Ryan enjoys the unique challenges of conducting movies in concert; recent and upcoming performances include Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Pixar Animation Studios' Pixar in Concert. Driven by a lifelong passion for learning, Ryan has attended masterclasses and seminars around the world. Ryan recently attended the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music's Conductors Workshop, and was one of just eight conductors worldwide to be invited to the Musiikin aika Summer Festival Masterclass in Finland led by Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Susanna Mälkki. He also recently attended a contemporary music symposium led by Alan Gilbert featuring the New York Philharmonic. Past events include the Aurora Chamber Festival in Sweden, where he studied under Maestro Kurt Masur, the Lucerne Festival Academy’s Conducting Masterclass in Switzerland, and the Eastman School of Music’s Summer Conducting Institute. Ryan holds degrees, summa cum laude, in Bassoon Performance and Voice Performance from California State University, Sacramento and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Music Business from the Berklee College of Music. Widely praised for his tireless work ethic, natural poise, and impassioned, inspired performances, Ryan continues to connect deeply with orchestras and audiences alike, and has proven to be a formidable presence on the podium.

High School Honor Band Conductor

Dr. David Vickerman, 2015 winner of The American Prize in Conducting, is the Director of Bands at San José State University. In addition to conducting the Wind Ensemble and the contemporary music ensemble “Disrupt”, he teaches undergraduate and graduate instrumental conducting. Under his artistic leadership, the SJSU Wind Ensemble was selected to perform in the Spring of 2020 at both the California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC) and the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Western/Northwestern Division Conference. Prior to his appointment at San José State University, he was the Director of Bands at The College of New Jersey where he established the Wind Ensemble as a regional model for performance excellence through invitations to the CBDNA and National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Eastern Division Conferences. Before joining The College of New Jersey, he held the position of Director of Bands on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus where

he conducted the Wind Ensemble and directed the Pep Band. In addition to his duties at SJSU, he has served as the Associate Conductor of Great Noise Ensemble, in Washington D.C. and he is a highly sought-after guest conductor, having conducted numerous honor bands across the country.

A fervent advocate for contemporary music, Dr. Vickerman has commissioned works by eminent composers and conducted numerous world premieres with The San José State University Wind Ensemble, The College of New Jersey Wind Ensemble and Great Noise Ensemble. He has also arranged several pieces for winds including Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Wind Ensemble by Philip Glass, Ára Batur by the Icelandic rock band, Sigur Rós, Observer in the Magellanic Cloud by Mason Bates and Craigslistlieder by Gabriel Kahane. In the fall of 2013, Dr. Vickerman conducted the premiere of the “Sgt. Pepper Project” with Great Noise Ensemble. This concert consisted of thirteen premieres, each based off of a track from the famous Beatles album. For a concert event entitled “Digital Embrace” at the Peabody Institute, he conducted a concert of wind band music that focused on the use of integrated live electronics. His primary conducting instructors include Dr. Edward C. Harris, Dr. Stuart Sims, Robert Ponto and Dr. Harlan Parker.

Dr. Vickerman regularly presents at regional, national and international conferences on topics ranging from teaching social justice issues in band, to the development of a computer-based conducting analysis system to assist beginning conducting students. His co-authored paper with Dr. Andrea Salgian, “Computer-Based Tutoring for Conducting Students,” was presented at the International Computer Music Conference in Utrecht, Netherlands in September 2016. He also presented “Improve Band Performance with Socially-Conscious Repertoire” along with Dr. Colleen Sears, at the National Association for Music Education Eastern Division Conference in 2017 and at the Midwest Clinic in 2018.

Dr. Vickerman graduated from the Peabody Institute with a DMA in Wind Conducting in 2014 and a Master’s Degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Oregon in 2010. Prior to his work at the University of Oregon, he taught high school in California for 6 years after receiving a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education and teaching credential from California State University Stanislaus in 2002.
