Specific Expectations Covered:M6:estimate and measure the passage of time in five-minute intervals, and in days, weeks, months and yearsM9:estimate, read and record temperatures to the nearest degree CelsiusM11:make purchases and change for money amounts up to $10, and estimate, count and recordthe value up to $10 of a collection of coins and billsP7:use environmental data to create models of patterns (eg. Monday - sunny, Tuesday - rainy)and display the patterns on a chartD3:generate questions that have a finite number of responses for their own surveys

Table of Contents:1. Counting the Days2. Temperature Graphs3. Merlin’s Math Store4. Weather Patterns5. Daily Graphs

These activities are contained in their own separate resource because they are meant to beactivities that become a part of the classroom’s daily routines. It is through the continuousrepetition that students gain understanding and confidence with these mathematical skills.

Counting the DaysCreate a place holder for counting days like the one depicted below. This could be sewn, ormade with plastic cups. There are a variety of commercial ones for sale as well. Have a monitoradd a cube to the one’s pouch everyday. After ten have been added, change the ten ones for oneten.

You may also want to have a number line, like the one depicted below, that provides studentswith a visual representation of the date and a sense of the days going by.

Temperature Graphs

Everyday temperature activity:1) Have a weekly monitor who checks a thermometer that’s placed on the outsideof a window.2) The monitor then leads the hotter-colder temperatures game (the class makesguesstimates on the temperature, and the monitor tells them whether it is hotter orcolder). The teacher can mark the limits on a number line to help studentsvisualize their guesses.3) Once the class has guessed correctly, the monitor then goes to the meteorologycentre to graph the temperature on a line graph.

The graph found on the following page has the x-axis labelled as days. It will benecessary to write in the y-axis of temperature and the graph title (for example:Our Temperature Graph in September).

You may want to photocopy the temperature graphs on overheads to makecomparisons between two months. Or you can create a border around theclassroom of the temperature graphs. If you make a border make sure the scalesmatch up (for example, your y-axis in September will probably start at 5 degreesCelsius whereas in February your y-axis will start at -15 degrees Celsius) bymatching the numbers not the paper itself.

Merlin’s Math Store

Method:1) Set aside a bulletin board and make a sign reading “Merlin’s Store” or your own store slogan.2) Place garage sale, dollar store, free promotion items etc. on the bulletin board, with amonetary value.3) Give a bank account to each student.4) With stamps or photocopied money, have students gain and lose money for various things inthe class (make money for helping out or being kind, lose money for a violation of a rule).

Weather PatternsEveryday weather pattern activity:1) Lead the class in the “what’s the weather like today song” to the tune of “Mary had a LittleLamb.”

2) Have the weekly monitor check the weather and record it in picture format on the followingpage.

Daily GraphsThe following pages contain 70 questions that you can ask and graph the answers throughout theyear. These 70 questions are meant only as a springboard for more ideas that will arisethroughout the year in your classroom. You may want to have a box available where studentscan submit daily graph questions. This will allow your students to practice formulatingquestions with discrete answers.
