To establish Philadelphia’s premier jazz event, linking new, young audiences with local professional jazz artists through a Center City jazz festival hosted outdoors and at some of the area’s coolest and most intimate venues. Historically, Philadelphia is one of the most important incubators of jazz talent in the world, launching the careers of John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington Jr., McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson and more recently, Christian McBride, Terell Stafford, and many of the other biggest names in jazz. Today, amongst artists, Philadelphia’s jazz scene is resurgent. Anchored by a set of strong university jazz studies programs, a whole crop of local artists are ready to build a new jazz mainstream, create artistically innovative music, and engage a new generation of listeners and aficionados. The Center City Jazz Festival debuted Saturday, April 28th 2012 and featured 17 exciting bands from the Philadelphia and NYC areas. The bands performed in four packed venues which were all centrally located in downtown Philadelphia, and within a short walking distance of each other. The venues included Time Restaurant, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, and Milkboy Philadelphia. 2012’s festival was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, during which $17,200 was raised from 188 individual contributions. To establish Philadelphia’s premier jazz event, linking new, young audiences with local professional jazz

artists through a Center City jazz festival hosted outdoors and at some of the area’s coolest and most

intimate venues.

Historically, Philadelphia is one of the most important incubators of jazz talent in the world, launching

the careers of John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington Jr., McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson and

more recently, Christian McBride, Terell Stafford, and many of the other biggest names in jazz. Today,

amongst artists, Philadelphia’s jazz scene is resurgent. Anchored by a set of strong university jazz studies

programs, a whole crop of local artists are ready to build a new jazz mainstream, create artistically

innovative music, and engage a new generation of listeners and aficionados.

The Center City Jazz Festival debuted Saturday, April 28th 2012 and featured 17 exciting bands from

the Philadelphia and NYC areas. The bands performed in four packed venues which were all centrally

located in downtown Philadelphia, and within a short walking distance of each other. The venues

included Time Restaurant, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, and Milkboy Philadelphia. 2012’s festival was funded through

a Kickstarter campaign, during which $17,200 was raised from 188 individual contributions.
