New Delhi: The landmarkIndia-US military logisticsagreement in Washingtonwas complemented with astrategic confluence in Delhiwhere foreign minister Sush-ma Swaraj and secretary ofstate John Kerry agreed onthe “urgent need” for Pakis-tan to dismantle safe havensfor terrorists and criminalnetworks.

“We reaffirmed the ur-gent necessity for Pakistan todismantle safe havens for ter-rorists and criminal net-works including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammedand D-Company,” Swaraj sa-id after the conclusion of thelast strategic and commerci-al dialogue with the Obamaadministration.

On his part, Kerry said,

The particular referenceto LeT, Jaish and D company—linked to dozens of terro-rist strikes in India—was in-tended, as Swaraj said, to sig-nal a meeting of minds onterrorism and the need toabjure any distinction betwe-en good and bad terrorists.

Saying that she had brie-fed Kerry on the threat posedby Pakistan-sponsoredcross-border terrorism to In-dia and the wider region,Swaraj added, “SecretaryKerry and I also agreed onthe need for Pakistan to domore to bring the perpetra-tors of 2008 Mumbai and 2016Pathankot terrorist attacksto justice.”

The linkage between theMumbai and Pathankot at-tacks was a clear endorse-ment of the Indian positionthat the strike on in the IAFbase was sourced from Pakis-tan just as the Lashkar raidon India’s financial capital.The complementarity on ter-rorism and Pakistan was ac-companied by some warmcomments as Kerry said “wehave moved amazingly inthis relationship” that hadonce struggled to come out ofthe shadows of the Cold War.

Kerry said India and theUnited States had committedto cooperation in cyber cri-me, renewable energy andupgrading India’s powergrids and would pursue trila-teral talks between the US,India and Afghanistan at theUN next week. He added thatIndia-US nuclear trade sho-uld soon see American nucle-ar reactors being set up in In-dia.

US secretary of commer-ce Penny Pritzer said anychange in US H1B and L1 vi-sas were not directed at Indi-an applicants and reflectedacross the board decisionsthat were not nation-specific.

Hyderabad: A 24-year-old airhostess with a private airlineswas allegedly molested by a ra-dio taxi driver on the outskirtsof Hyderabad early on Tuesday.A case of of attempt to rape androbbery has been registeredagainst the driver. The offender,identified as Imran, is a residentof the Dargah Khaliz Khan loca-lity in Rajendranagar and is ab-sconding.

The incident occurred aro-und 2am when the woman step-ped out of her apartment to pur-chase some medicines. Shewent to a cab parked nearby andasked for help as the medical sto-re near her house was shut. Inher complaint, the survivor ac-cused the cabbie of taking her toan isolated place near OuterRing Road on the pretext of hel-ping her, before he tried to as-sault her sexually.

“When she inquired withthe cab driver about medical sto-res nearby, he offered to driveher to one,” said an official fromthe Rajendranagar police sta-tion, quoting from the compla-int. He claimed that the survivorsat in the cab’s front seat. “Thedriver, however, misguided herand took her to an isolated placewhere he caught hold of her andmolested her, pushing herdown. But she managed to resisthim. The driver then forciblysnatched away her cellphoneand assaulted her, due to whichshe sustained injuries. Later,the accused left her at an isola-ted place and fled,” said Sunpre-et Singh, deputy commissionerof police, Shamshabad.

Help arrived when the 24-ye-ar-old spotted another cab dri-ven by a man, Latif, who was ta-king a passenger to Shamsha-bad airport. “She called a friendfrom Lateef’s mobile, who inturn called the cops. The pas-senger in the cab had also repor-tedly called the cops,” said a poli-ce official.

urt has supported the Maha-rashtra government’s new lawbanning showering of curren-cy notes on girls in dance bars,but questioned it for allegedlyputting unnecessary condi-tions on bar owners like instal-lation of CCTV cameras insi-de and ban on serving liquorduring performances, whichare in violation of the apex co-urt’s directives.

A bench of Justices DipakMisra and C Nagappan on Tu-esday supported the state go-vernment’s decision to bring anew law to make showering ofcurrency notes on dance barsa punishable offence, saying itwas against the dignity of thegirls performing at the bars.

The state government re-cently framed MaharashtraProhibition of Obscene Dancein Hotels, Restaurants and BarRooms and Protection of Dig-nity of Women Act, 2016 which

says that “no person shallthrow or shower coins, cur-rency notes or any article oranything which can be mone-tized on the stage or hand overpersonally to a dancer or mis-behave or indecently behavewith the working women or to-uch her person in any place”.

For any violation, the Actprovides for a prison term thatcan extend up to six months orfine which may extend up toRs 50,000 or both.

Challenging the validity ofthe law, the Indian Hotel andRestaurant Association hadcontended that showering of

currency was a kind of tip gi-ven to performers and it couldnot be criminalised.

Senior advocate JayantBhushan, appearing for the as-sociation, said money was gi-ven to singers performing onstage and there was nothingwrong if people gave money todancers.

The bench, however, said,“Prima facie, we do not findany illegality in it. It is for thebenefit of performing girls. Aperson watching dance can-not throw coin or currency no-tes at dancers. It is against thedignity of the girls.”

Mumbai:Licences awarded to all three dance bars on the insistenceof the Supreme Court in May have been revoked for failure to complywith the rules under the new law that regulates the business.

Awarded licences by the police after the Supreme Court told thestate government not to delay the process, the bars, Aero Punjab, SaiPrasad and Indiana, were told by the state to fulfil all requirementsunder the new dance bar rules within 60 days of obtaining thelicence. “These bars did not fulfil the requirements in the new rulesand so their licences stand revoked, and the Rs 2 lakh fee that theypaid has also been forfeited,” a senior police officer said. Aurangabad: The cybercrime branch of the city policeon Sunday arrested a candi-date and four others for cheat-ing while using hi-tech devicesduring a Maharashtra PublicService Commission examheld in Wardha on Sunday. Theexam was being held at theGovernment Medical Collegeand Hospital (GMCH) here forthe post of tax assistant in thesales tax department.

The police said the candi-date, Vithalsingh Gholwal (23),used a spy camera to record im-ages of the question paper andsent it to three of the other ac-cused, who searched for the an-swers online and also took helpfrom experts. They relayed theanswers back to Gholwal, whowas wearing mini-bluetoothearphones. The other four whowere arrested are Gholwal’syounger brother Sandeep (20),Lakhansingh Dedwal (20),Arun Zonwal (24) and GMCHclerk Madan Bamnath.

The police said Bamnathhad borrowed the laptop of aGMCH medico, Vikas Rathod,on Saturday, saying he re-quired it to help his daughter

complete an academic project.He returned the laptop to Rath-od on Sunday afternoon afterthe exam.

When Rathod examinedthe laptop, he found that thelast user had not logged out of aparticular website. On check-ing the site, he learnt that somecommunication had takenplace to cheat in the exam.

He approached the cybercrime branch the same eve-ning. After making discreet in-quiries for two days, the policetold Rathod to lodge a com-plaint. They arrested the fivemen on Tuesday.

Cyber crime officials saidthe accused have been chargedwith cheating by imperson-ation, dishonesty, criminalconspiracy, abetment of crimeand various sections of the ITAct and the Maharashtra Pre-vention of Malpractices at Uni-versity, Board and other Speci-fied Examinations Act 1982.

The accused have been re-manded to nine days in policecustody. Primary investiga-tions have revealed that the spycamera was procured fromDelhi. The bluetooth ear-phones, spy camera and otherdevices used by the accusedhave been seized by the police.

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat go-vernment has banned slaugh-ter of animals and birds aswell as sale of meat, chickenand fish in its municipalitiesfrom August 29 to September 5for the Jain fasting period of‘Paryushan’.

In big cities like Ahmed-abad, Surat and Vadodara, the-re is no ban of sale of poultry,meat and fish, though slaugh-terhouses will remain closed.The issue has reached Gujarathigh court which has soughtexplanation from the govern-ment.

A 2008 Supreme Court or-der approved closure of abatto-irs during ‘Paryushan’ to re-spect religious sentiments ofthe minority Jain community.

With this order, apart from clo-sure of slaughter houses inmunicipality limits, the direc-tor of municipalities has alsobanned sale of meat and fishby issuing a circular on August22. This matter was first heardby Justice S H Vora, who askedthe state to file a reply explai-ning the decision. The judgeasked to place this case beforean appropriate bench. “Thematter will be taken up for hea-ring on Thursday,” said petitio-ner’s advocate Jay Thakkar.

Deputy chief minister Ni-tin Patel said, “Governmenthas given orders following ear-lier order of SC and present le-gal provisions which allowbanning of slaughter of ani-mals and sale of meat and fish.This practice is being obser-ved for the past several years.”
