V.H. I . REGISTEREDCRAFTWORKERSGROUP SCHEME

SLIDES NEEDED!

The Council now has a slide

cabinet at its Dublin office, so we

can extend the range of slides

and display them properly.

We are constantly requested -

often at very short notice - to

recommend makers for exhibitions

and other opportunities, to supply

visual material for buyers,

commissioners and purchasers,

and to supply slides for lectures

and presentations. We document

work for exhibitions and for the

shop, but we also need makers

who want to be promoted for

these opportunities to ensure that

we have up to date slides and

supporting material of their work.

We also have artists files to keep

c.v.'s, brochures, catalogues,

prints, press clippings etc. as

back-up information material.

Recently we have had to send

visual material to Liberty's of

London; to the architects for

Ireland House in New York; to

the World Crafts Council for

Norwegian conference workshop

leaders; and to exhibition cura-

tors in Japan, Taiwan, Germany,

Paris and London.

Please send up to 10 slides of

recent work, each one labelled

with name, medium and

dimensions and accompanied by

a c.v. and other back-up material.

P.S. Would the two makers (1

jeweller and 1 woodturner) who

kindly responded to an earlier

request for slides - but didn't label

them or leave a name at the desk

- let Greg McAteer know who

they are. We can't promote

anonymous work!

CONGRATULATIONS

The Crafts Council congratulates

Laura O'Hagan who won Young

Businesswoman of the Year for

her entrepreneurial expertise in

setting up the Tileworks firm.

Laura and her partner Orla

Kaminska are graduates of

the Crafts Council's

designed to equip young craft-

workers to set up in business.

MAKERS LIST

to the V.H.I, circular which as sent

out with the last Newsletter - from

both potential new members to

the V.H.I, and existing members.

A letter and V.H.I, application

form has been sent to the

craftworkers who will be joining

the V.H.I, for the first time, and

existing members will be

notified shortly regarding the

The remaining wing of Jenkinstown

House is being innovatively

restored and renovated by Shamus

and Patricia Malone "The Pottery",

Castle Yard, Kilkenny. Situated 4

miles from the city in Jenkinstown

Park it is a much visited site adja-

cent to Dunmore Caves which has

in excess of 40,000 visitors a year.

The building will house a craft and

coffee shop and several craft units.

For further information please

contact Shamus or Patricia Malone

by writing to "The Pottery",

Castle Yard, Kilkenny, stating

craft experience.

This exhibition arose through the

invitation of the Irish College in

Paris (16th-31st March).

The work represented was that of

the leading Potters/Ceramists

from the 32 counties

incorporating both functional

and sculptural work.

This work included decorated

domestic ware be Geoffrey

Healy; new stoneware from

Brian Heraty of Boyne Valley

Pottery; plus a beautiful selection

of pieces by Michael Jackson, the

sculptured pieces of Michael

Kennedy; and the evocative pod

like vessel forms of Sarah Ryan.

The decorated vessels by Maxine

Mearns inspired by primitive and

ancient art along with Diane

McCormick Ceramics inspired by

Flora and Fauna of the sea

attracted a great deal of attention.

The exhibition was grant aided

by the Crafts Council of Ireland

and the cultural relations

committee of the Department of

Foreign Affairs with invaluable

assistance being given to the

Society by the ESB. The

exhibition was formally opened

by the, Irish Ambassador Mr. John

Campbell. The event proved to

be successful with many of the

exhibitors identifying new markets

for their work. C.P.S. looks

forward to further international

exhibition opportunities.

•SALT-GLAZE1

MICK CASSON

Mick Casson is best known as a

potter and as a populariser of

pottery. His series of lectures

given in the Crawford College of

Art and Design, detailing the

development of salt-glaze from

mediaeval Germany to the

present day, show that he is an

able historian as well.

The presentation over three days

held his student audience's rapt

attention. Such was the level of

their enthusiasm that the vast

majority of them also attended a

fourth lecture sponsored by the

Society of Cork Potters.

Interesting asides, self-deprecating

humour and above all an astute

grasp of the historical background

to contemporary pottery were the

hallmarks of his lectures. This was

particularly true of his historical

analysis of the two words defining

current work - "ceramics" and

"pottery". These lectures were part

of a joint effort, between the Crafts

Council and the Ceramics

Department in Cork, to further

encourage the development of salt-

glazing in Ireland. A salt-glaze

kiln has been built there with Gus

Mabelson's assistance and a series

of visiting lecturers invited to the

college, including Peter Meanley

and Jane Hamlyn.

An exhibition of the work of all the

visitors, as well as a selection of

the student project work that was

made with them, will be shown in

the Crafts Council's gallery at the

beginning of June. A public

lecture by the design historian

Hilary O'Kelly on salt-glaze will

also be a part of the programme at

1 1a.m., June 5 in the Crafts

Council, Dublin. It is hoped that a

seven day workshop for

professional potters interested in

experiencing salt-glaze will be held

in Thomastown in August 1994.

The workshop will be hosted by

Gus Mabelson. Mick Casson,

Jane Hamlyn and Wally Keeler

have all expressed a keen interest

in leading the workshop, which will

examine both new and traditional

approaches to salt. A German

salt-glazer will also be invited.

Eight places will be reserved for

Irish potters who wish to attend.

A fee for the workshop is yet to be

decided. Any potter interested in

joining this unique event should

contact Gus Mabelson
