PRESIDENT – Mary Lou Younger It is so exciting to see warmer weather. Makes me want to work in the garden. While we were in

Texas last week, I visited several of the garden suppliers and much of their spring shipments are in, IT

WAS BEAUTIFUL!!!!

My husband would only let me bring 5 plants back, wished I hadn't listened. But I had a wonderful

time, especially since my brother's cancer treatment was resumed and he is doing wonderfully on this

new medication.

Lots of things going on in HCE, with planning of our Centennial Celebration, IAHCE conference in

March, Annual Meeting, lessons, crafts, etc.

For our Centennial Celebration, Nancy Benz and Luanna Olson are doing a FABULOUS job. The

board and past presidents are helping them and it is going to be something you don't want to

miss. The venue was changed due to the enormity of the project. We are asking that each unit try to

bring at least 8 people--either members, spouses, family, or friends. Of course, we also look forward

to seeing many of our At Large members. There is an RSVP deadline (June 1st) that is very

important so that we have enough refreshments and places. The entertainment will be amazing also,

Luanna vouches that it is superb.

As a novelty, we are planning a Spring & Plant Sale on 18 and 19th.of May. We thought it would

be nice to have an outlet for Spring and Summer crafts. Also, our plant sale at the garage sale does

well, but it would be better if they were available a little earlier than late July. In charge are Richey

Vanderspool, Vickie Siebenhaar, and Bobbi McEntire. They are working on the details. If it works

fine, and if it doesn't---we tried.

As you start you Spring Cleaning, please remember our garage sale. We will start collecting in late

June, but if you need it out sooner, just call me. I'm in the process of reorganizing my basement in

preparation.

Due to an unforeseen request, our ANNUAL MEETING has been changed to MAY 7th at the

Farm Bureau Auditorium. Registration starts at 9a.m. Our nominating committee consists of

Richey Vanderspool and Nancy Griffith (369-1573). It will be a ballot vote. If you are interested in

any of the following positions, please contact either one of them. Positions are: 1st Vice President,

Secretary, Cultural Enrichment, Public Relations, and Volunteer Directors.

FIRST VICE PRESIDENT – Program – Bobbi McEntire Hey Gals

to state conference. DON'T FORGET IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR FUTURE

please contact Bobbi McEntire and she will see that you receive one.

FAMILY and COMMUNITY ISSUES – Judy French

I’m looking forward to seeing the sun and warmer weather coming, I tend to get winter blues and look

forward to spring. There is something so hopeful about spring you start to see color again, the leaves start to sprout out

and we start seeing those first flowers. The IAHCE conference in Effingham is in March and I enjoy learning about

all the new things happening in the state.

I want to thank Mayview, Rantoul, Early Risers and Staley units that are helping with the DSC homes, I know

it is appreciated. The Bondville/Seymour unit has just adopted a home with 4 clients.

“Never cut a tree down in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your

most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring

will come.” Robert Schuller

SEWING DATES: March 29th – 9:30 – 3:00 meeting at the Farm Bureau Auditorium. Bring a sack lunch. PLEASE CALL

Elizabeth Michael if you can come OR not. Thanks Elizabeth Michael – 586-4256 - Everyone invited to come. Thank you to Janet Whitside, Terry Crowley, Mary Ann Rinckenberger, Karen Moon and Elizabeth Michael there helping

sew the weighted blankets on February 26th. Thank you to Terry Crowley for bringing a delicious Quiche for lunch. Thank

you to Carol Froeschl for bringing fabric for the weighted blankets and was also invited to stay for lunch.

Project Linus Weighted Blankets: It has been 9 years since I learned to make the Project Linus Weighted Blankets.

Since I am a members of the Eastern Illinois Chapter of Project Linus, at first we filled the blankets with used

sheets—now Project Linus asked us NOT to use used sheets so now we have to ask the families to get together with

family members to give clean used sheets and work together to fill the pockets.

I am so great full for those members that come to help sew and fold these blankets. There is a real need in our

community and county for these blankets. Carle and Christie clinic have given donations to this project.

On April 7th will be the Disability Expo at the Vineyard Church in Urbana from 8 – 5 p.m. And on April 21st is the 2018

C-U Autism Walk Event at the Champaign County Fair Grounds in Urbana from 11 – 5 p.m. with the walk starting at 2 p.m.

Judy French, Community Outreach Chrm, will assist me with the display and drawings for weighted blankets this day. We

will be giving away 15-20 blankets to families attending the event.

Any questions about this project, please call me, Elizabeth Michael

CULTURAL ENRICHMENT – Richey Vanderspool

We are getting ready to take our 8 winning Cultural Enrichment Project to State Conference on March 13-15, 2018.

What an exciting time this is for the Board Members and other HCE members that have the good fortune to attend.

Conference is in Effingham this year , so that will have me lost all over again. Hopefully I can get all the projects to the right

place at the right time. I am just so pleased to be in this position. It keeps me hoping. The Cultural Enrichment day is much

earlier for this 2018. This year, October 2, 2018 is the date selected. That’s a Tuesday! Better get busy working on your new

projects. We have 3 less weeks to finish them up.

INTERNATIONAL – DONNA PRAHL Australia’s National Flower: The Golden Wattle

The Golden Wattle typically grows about 13 to 26 feet and it is from the Mimosa family genus, a tropical and sub-tropical

plant. Mature Golden Wattle plants are said to be reasonably frost and drought tolerant. It was proclaimed Australia ‘s

national flower in 1988 and formally declared national Wattle Day on September 1, 1992.

VOLUNTEER HOURS – Pat Meriedth March is here and Spring is right around the corner. Warmer days makes it easier to get outside and do some

volunteer work. Have you ever heard an HCE member say "I don't need the recognition for volunteering"?

Volunteering is not just for the recognition, our volunteer hours help support the U of I Extension in programming and

financing programs that make an impact on our communities and the state by showing their value to the state

government. Presentations and programs to non-HCE groups prove how much we care and support the state thru HCE

volunteering. As Luanna Olson reported last year, without volunteer hours the 4-H programs would not exist. So a few hours

here and there can make a difference.

Listed below are some ideas or examples where you can give volunteer time and count the hours.

Celebrating Illinois There are many exciting things to see when you visit downtown Chicago. At Cloud Gate you can see a

mirrored, bean shaped sculpture. It shows the Chicago skyline. “The Bean” is part of Millennium Park.

There is a set of stairs leading down to a huge ice skating rink. It is located at 201 E. Randolph Street.

The park is great place for the whole family to walk, stroll and people watch. It has received more than

25,000,000 visitors, and I was one of them over the Christmas Holidays. My daughter and son-in-law

took me on the train. They don’t call Chicago the “Windy City” for nothing. It is bordered by Michigan

Avenue to the West, Columbus Drive to the East, Randolph Street to the North and Monroe Street to the South. There is a

great breeze off Lake Michigan. “The Bean” is an iconic draw for visitors and locals alike. We even took a picture in front of

Cloud Gate, the official name for the massive, stainless steel structure that’s become Chicago’s signature landmark. In its

mirror-like surface you’ll not only see your own reflection but the downtown skyline. It’s open all year long. It is open from 6

a.m. – 11 p.m. daily and there is free admission. There are many free things to see at Millennium Park. I like the winter time

best because of the singing, giant Christmas tree and of course the different foods available, oh, meant the excellent shopping.

Community Outreach chair, Richey Vanderspool, explained what we as a unit could do for the DSC home for four men in Champaign.

We will look for ways to help especially on birthdays and holidays with some extra treats and gifts. Their group leader suggested that the

residents of the house need gift cards, a new set of pots and pans, aprons, pot holders, DVDs, etc. Richey took treats and gifts for the

resident that had a birthday before she had attended her first Bondville/Seymour meeting! Thank you, Richey, for your thoughtfulness and

generosity on our behalf.

New Business – Luanna Olson made a motion which was seconded by Judy Swiger that at each month’s meeting we give a voluntary

monetary donation from members for what the DSC home needs. It was passed.

The lesson on Eggs was presented by Vicki. She made some delicious eggs dishes and reminded us about how to handle eggs safely.

Joan Jordan, secretary

DEWEY/FISHER UNT

Eleven members of the Dewey-Fisher unit met for their Feb meeting. They welcomed three visitors: Carol Froeschl, 2nd Vice President,

Champaign County HCE Board, who is assisting the unit’s 100th birthdayl committee with their program by taking pictures and preparing a

power-point program; Paula Zwilling, Leader for the Fantastic 4-H’ers of Fisher, who came to give us an update; and Judy Miller, Co-

Director of the Fisher Food Pantry, who came to give us information about the scope of Fisher’s Food Pantry. Paula reported her 4-H unit,

now approximately 60 members strong, is very active, both within their unit and in the community. Judy advised the Food Pantry collects

and distributes coats as well as food. The unit heard two lessons: Bobbi McEntire gave the January lesson “Financial Elder Exploitation”

because the unit was unable to meet in January due to the inclement weather. The February lesson, “Creating a No-Waste Kitchen” was

given by Eve Springer. Marge Probasco gave us a look at Australia, our country of study for 2018. The meeting ended with members and

guests enjoying refreshments provided by the hostesses Marge Probasco and Lynn Trotter.

MAYVIEW UNIT

The February 6, 2018 meeting of the Mayview H.C.E. Unit was held at Gerry Ann Windler's home

at 1:00 p.m., with Cheryl Peter's as Co-Host. It was the Unit’s 92nd Birthday, and we had assorted

cupcakes, snacks, and drinks. Carol lead the Pledge and the H.C.E. Aim. Roll was taken with 10

members answering “have you or anyone you know been scammed”. The 2018 Program books were

Grandmother had been in this Unit and she had a lot of their program booklets and history of our

Unit. There were 880 members at one time in the County, and also our club had 58 members, many have passed away, or unable to

come. They used to start with a prayer each meeting, and did things like skits and such, the History is quite interesting as to how they

started the Unit so many years ago.

Cheryl Peter's sent sympathy cards to Mary Helen Moser-Jedlick, and Steve and Nancy Moser on the death of their son, Bill, who had a

heart attack and was killed in a car accident, he was helping Steve farm. Our thoughts and prayers go to the family.

Lois Campbell was ill, but she had the International report, she will be gone to her daughter's in California next month, so we'll hear

from her next April. Pat gave the Treasurer's report with a bank balance of $368.38. Joyce made a motion to pay Linda Flessner expenses

for the group home, Beth seconded it, motion carried and passed. Linda said there is another member at the house now, and with the

donations given by our members in December for the group home that we were able to give each one of the resident $20.00 worth of gift

cards. Carol made up a book about our Unit and we all looked at it, it will be at the 100th Anniversary of our H.C.E. Unit on Saturday, July

7, 2018. The next meeting will be at Margaret Goodwin’s on March 6th, with Beth Anderson as co-host. Lesson to be given by Barb

Leach. Meeting adjourned. Gerry Ann Windler, Secretary

PENFIELD UNIT

The Penfield HCE unit met at 7:00 Monday, February 19 at Rosetta Suits' home in spite of a cold windy, rainy night.

5 members and 2 guests attended. Carolyn Flessner and Janice Duitsman are planning to join our group.

The meeting began as usual with the Pledge of Allegiance, Homemaker's Aim, and Collect for Club Women.

Officer and Committee reports were given. The letter, invitations, and schedules sent by Mary Lou Younger, CCHCE president were read

and shared.

A lively discussion of the lesson "What do you do with Leftovers" was followed by lovely refreshments served by our hostess. The next

meeting will be tentatively held with Roxie Sage as hostess.

PESOTUM UNIT

The February 15th meeting of the Pesotum HCE was called to order at 1pm. Roll call was answered by 11 members. It was

really nice to see members who had not been able to attend our meetings for some time. This includes Vicki Bussart

and Karen Russell.

Champaign County Home and Community Education 100th Anniversary Celebration

Saturday, July 7, 2018 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Savoy Methodist Church The Champaign County Home Improvement was incorporated on May 15, 1918. Champaign one of 12 Illinois counties

organized in 1918. Kankakee and Mercer had been started in 1915 and 1917. Kankakee County at this time was only the

second county organized in the entire United States. In 1915, Kankakee County hired Miss Eva Benefiel, a graduate of the

University of Illinois, the first adviser to develop a home improvement association (at this time the adviser was called Home

Demonstration Agent). One of the biggest problems of organizing was dirt roads, which were mud at least six month of the

year, and little other transportation except by train. At first there were no units but were organized and divided according to

townships. Units were organized in 1922.

AN AIM for HOME-MAKERS: Juliet Lita Bane was born in Livingston County in 1878. She was a graduate of the

University of Illinois. Miss Bane was considered one of the better known home economist of her time. She is best known for

her writing of “An Aim for the Homemaker” in 1919. In March 1919, in the issue of the Champaign

County Home Improvement Bulletin was the following early version of the “An Aim for the Home-

Maker” written by Lita Bane.

To have every home an institution which is:

- economically sound

- physically healthful

- morally wholesome

- mentally stimulating

- spiritually inspiring

- artistically satisfying

- socially responsible

- a center of unselfish love

In 1922, the aim was copyrighted for framing as the aim written today. In 1936, Miss Bane was head of the Home Economics

at the University of Illinois. Juliet Bane died in February 1957. Carol Froeschl
