CCF SA2020

ANNUALAWARDS

The South Australian Civil Construction Hall of Fame award is to recognise individuals that have made an

outstanding contribution to the South Australian earthmoving and civil contracting industry.

It seeks to honour exceptional performance or accomplishments of those directly or indirectly involved in

contracting and to expand the historical record of the industry, increase public awareness and to generate

a sense of industry ownership in the award.

Successful inductees will be acknowledged on the South Australian Civil Construction Hall of Fame

Honour Board.

Historical Context

Before the advent of regular road transport, South Australia’s cargo was mainly carried by sea and from the

early 1850’s over a hundred jetties and piers were built in various ports throughout the state’s coastal areas

to facilitate the loading and unloading of goods. On the other hand, the state’s first roads built in the early

19th century were basically designed for slow moving traffic. By the turn of the century more of Adelaide’s

roads were being top-dressed with tar and coated with grit to accommodate the increase in road transport.

Earthmoving type work associated with these different modes of transport was still carried out with pick and

shovel and soil or rocks moved by horse drawn cart.

It was after the Second World War, when earthmoving equipment began making rapid advancement in

design and operational capability that the contractor’s role began to change from primarily undertaking

the movement of earth to include other civil infrastructure activities. The work practices, endeavours and

initiatives of yesterday’s road gang worker or earthmoving labourer have significantly changed to become

a highly skilled and recognised trade occupation in today’s civil engineering industry. Construction plant

has also moved on from tractors with scoop and excavator attachments to highly complex computerised

equipment.

Multi-million dollar civil infrastructure projects are now the norm with super highways, desalination plants

and wind farms in addition to traditional roads, reservoirs and power stations as Australia comes to term with

urban growth, crucial water shortages and global environmental challenges.

Throughout the long and distinguished history of our state’s earthmoving and civil construction history, there

have been many individuals whose contribution and achievements have not been widely recognised.

Developed by Civil Contractors Federation SA, the Civil Construction Hall of Fame aims to identify and duly

reward exceptional past and present achievers and acknowledge their contribution to the rich history of the

Australian construction industry’s civil sector.
