DIRECTOR’S

NOTEEveryday we go Down the Rabbit Hole in one way or another. e challenges of today

require self reflection, creativity, logic in an illogical world and bravery. We are all Alice trying to make our way through life! is production is a team effort. It is the ideal collaboration because everyone who worked on this is bringing the best of what they have to the table. It is a feast of visual delicacies, exot-ic anthropomorphic animals, amazing designs made sustainably, movement and dance steeped in a rich stew of styles ending with a dessert of environmental bittersweet realities. is is how change is made. e creative process is alive and well in the Roaring Fork Valley. ank you for supporting work like this. e Carbondale Council is 40 years old this year.

Our mission is “Building Community through Art”. We love the community it has built!

Amy Kimberly, Laura Stover and Deborah Colley

e Green Is the New Black is much more than a fashion show. It is a deep

collaboration of artists, technicians, dancers, film-makers, writers and musicians, who come together and bring the “best of what they got” to the table.

“We challenge ourselves to see how far we can take collaborative creativity,” said artistic director Amy Kimberly. “We keep our eyes open year round for those partners and it is their involvement that shapes the tone of the show.”

Four years ago Kimberly met Deborah Colley when she came to the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities to pitch a different idea. Colley was new to town and looking to get involved. Kimber-ly snagged her for the show and soon discovered that Colley’s talent was a perfect fit. As Deborah says, “Dancing has always been my passion in life.” Although dance had been present in past fashion shows, it has taken a stronger and stronger role since Colley took control. e show allowed an op-

portunity for nontraditional dancers to gather and create together. An unexpected benefit was find-ing first-time dancers who had the opportunity to work in this collective environment and grow their passion for dance. For the show, Colley gathers the group in December to begin exploring their charac-ters. ey move and shake and shimmy and eventu-ally soar into a cohesive team. is year the dancers are animals with human traits.

“Lewis Carroll used anthropomorphic animals throughout his books and our animals are impor-tant to our environment. Since the show also hopes to inspire folks to take care of our earth, the animals are an important connection,” Colley said.

Laura Stover joined the team three years ago when she volunteered her talents. ose talents were many, but her visual expertise brought anoth-er layer of excellence. e first year she focused on simple graphic design. Last year the bar was raised

when Alchemy Audio/Visual came on board and the two partnered to incorporate a fairly new technology

called “projection mapping.”Projection mapping is the ability to turn objects, often irregularly shaped,

into a display surface for video projection. A two-or-three-dimensional object can be spatially mapped on the virtual program that mimics the real environ-ment it is to be projected on. is technique is used by artists and advertisers alike who can add extra dimensions, optical illusions and notions of move-ment onto previously static objects. e video is commonly combined with, or triggered by, audio to create an audiovisual narrative. With limited resources, the partnership produced an incredible feast of visual textures. is year, Al-chemy has acquired two new projectors and an expert in projection mapping to make the production pop. “I don’t think the audience expects a production of this caliber to come out of a small town and they are seriously in for a sur-prise year,” Stover laughed. Expect high art with the addition of artist Brian Col-ley, Film-maker Zeke Eagan and fabric artist Lydia Claussen. Stover explained, “Down the Rabbit Hole gives artists the ability to collaborate in a very multi-dimensional way and cultivate something much more dynamic than any of us would have created on our own.”

Another key element to the show is the stage and prop designs. Chris Er-ickson and Dana Ellis have taken the helm to insure you feel like you are going “down the rabbit hole” from the moment you enter the Carbondale Recreation Center. Erickson is an artist at the Studio for Art and Work in Carbondale. He designed the Mountain Fair sets for the last two years and has joined the 5Point Film team as well. Ellis has performed in the show the last three years as a dancer. is year she is producing a baby, instead of the show, but leant her

design talents to add some specialties to the experience. During the day she is an architect for Rowland + Broughton in Aspen.

e list of artists and collaborators could go on and on, but, at the end of the day, the most important aspect of the show is what you bring home with you. Hopefully it is the reality that, collectively, we can have a huge impact on our environment, our schools and our community! at is why these artists give of their time and talent.
