Contestant Entry Information Online entries through our website can be

made as early as 7pm on the Wednesday prior to entry day. You MUST HAVE a MEMBERSHIP NUMBER to use the online entry system. A confirmation email will be sent to you at the completion of your entry. Membership #’s, names, and events for all contestants that you are entering must be given, including 1st and 2nd preferences, and who is heading or heeling for the Team Roping entries. There is a link on the CCA Website Entry page with a form to use if you wish to fax your entries or you can call 1.800.667.9444 to enter. CUTOFF for all entries will be 2:30pm (Local Time) on the day of entries.

Local entries are non-members hold NO cards in any other association and are living n the that rodeos' trading area.

Non-member entries are non CCA members but hold a card in any other association.

Here are some guidelines that MUST be followed when submitting entries:

1.Local contestants MUST call the local entry number to enter. Any carded member wishing to enter with a local MUST enter all their events for that rodeo through the local entry line. Please refer to the entry information for local entry numbers.

2.NON-member entries must be made on entry day through the office

3.Roughstock contestants are NOT ALLOWED to pick SLACK as a preference.

4.Contestants must give TWO DIFFERENT preferences or an OUT. Cannot pick two preferences that are the same.

5.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to ask for different preferences for different events.

6.Contestants are NOT ALLOWED to enter one rodeo with one group and another rodeo with a different group.

7.ALL contestants in a buddy group MUST ask for the SAME PREFERENCES. Up to four contestants and four junior tags are allowed to buddy together. Team Roping partners are only considered part of the buddy group if they are entering another event in addition to Team Roping.

8.Only the person who made the entry is allowed to make changes to that group’s entry. If you want to be added to a group, then you must have the person who made the entry call in and add you.

9.DO NOT submit multiple or duplicate entries. Decide who is going to make the entry for the group and have only one person submit the entry using only one of

the methods available. Multiple entries for the same person or group is not an efficient process for the office and takes valuable time away from staff answering the entry line.

10.ALL FINES MUST BE CLEARED PRIOR TO ENTRY DAY. This includes fines owed to CCA and any other associations. Anyone paying CCA fines on entry day will be charged an additional $50 administration fee.

11.The ENTRY LINE is RESTRICTED to ENTRIES ONLY. If you have other CCA business, please call the main line after Monday

RIDE System The RIDE system was developed to create

the draw based on priority levels and to balance the entries between performances. The RIDE system takes the manual manipulation and any possibility of cheating or special favors out of creating the draw If you do not receive your preference it is because the system had to randomly move somebody. Your options are to TRADE or TURN OUT. The office cannot and will not alter the Final draw once it has been posted.

Callback Policy The UNOFFICIAL draws will now be

posted on our website no later than Wednesday evening at 5:00PM following entry day Monday. Please use it to find your individual draw day and time. Call backs can be made from the time the draw is posted until THURSDAY 1pm local time to report ERRORS ONLY.

NOTE: An “error” refers to being missed in the draw, buddy group being split up throughout performances, or entered in the wrong event.

DO NOT call the office if you did not get your 1st or 2nd preference. This is not a viable reason. According to . ENTRY STATISTICS, an average of 74% of people who entered received their 1st preference, 22% received their 2nd preference, and only 4% did not get either of their preferences.

The OFFICIAL draw will be posted Friday morning and is FINAL

New in 2014 There is a $ 25.00 fee for using the OUT on entry The Rodeo count for Roughstock raised from 10 to 15 Jr. Steer riding age raised from 14 to 15 Novice whistle raised from 6 to 8 seconds

Turn Outs If you have to Turn Out, you MUST call

the Turn Out Line at 306.721.2705 and leave a message.

Turnouts must be made by 11:00 a.m. prior to that days performance

If a slack is before 11:00 a.m. then the turnout must be the day before.

For Dual Approved Rodeos, you MUST call the LEAD Association to Turn Out.

If you Turn Out using a Medical or Vet Release, you MUST send a Doctor or Vet note to the CCA office within 10 days of the

Turn Out or else you will be charged applicable Turn Out Fees & Fines as per the CCA Rulebook.

NOTE: ALL TURN OUTS COME WITH APPLICABLE FEES AND/OR FINES, INCLUDING MEDICAL & VET RELEASES. If you Turn Out you are responsible to contact the CCA office to pay any outstanding fees or fines as a result. Please refer to the CCA Rulebook for all Turn Out rules

Notice to all Contestants: Starting July 1, 2011 an existing entry policy

will be enforced with respect to the second preference when entering a rodeo. A valid second preference will be one that is different from the first preference given. If a contestant does not give a different second preference, the entry will not be taken. No exceptions will be made to this policy after July 1, 2011. To help enforce this policy, the executive has approved adding the “draw out” option to the range of valid options for entry.

In the event that a contestant can only make one performance at a rodeo, they will be allowed to draw out of that rodeo starting July 1, 2011. If a contestant enters a rodeo with the second option as “out” there will be no second chance if they are drawn out by the entry system. As an example, if a contestant enters a rodeo as “Slack or out” they are stating that if they don’t get slack at that rodeo, they will not enter that rodeo at all. If a contestant enters using the “draw out” option this way, they will not be given any special preference in the system and may not get entered at that rodeo. The cost of using this draw out option will be a $25.00 admin fee payable prior to your next entry. For further information, please contact the CCA office.

Direct Deposit Information: The CCA Office has switched to Direct

Deposit rather than cheques for the Rodeo Payout. We need to collect banking information from all of our members. We will require all competing members to send us a VOID Cheque. They can do this 2 ways….by mail or by giving a VOID cheque to the Rodeo Secretary at a Rodeo when they pay their entry fees. The secretaries will have a spreadsheet that they will fill out once the member gives the secretary the VOID cheque to hand in to the Office. The Office will keep this VOID cheque on file and directly deposit winnings from every rodeo.

Conduct on the phone A reminder that rude behavior, harassment,

or foul language towards CCA staff will be documented, and result in a $100 fine. This fine will be levied by the CCA office, and the member will have 30 days to pay the fine before they become ineligible to enter as per the CCA Rulebook Section XIII A. 14

Canadian Cowboys Association prudently manages and allocates all funds collected from Members and Sponsors towards the Championship Finals.

The Canadian Cowboys Association was founded in 1963 with 60 members. Today, over 900 members from across Canada belong to the Association, which includes a full range of contestants and ages. The future is to ensure this legacy, with continued growth and development of the sport of rodeo through new rodeos, youth, rodeo schools, contestant development, an injury fund, sports medicine, etc. Contributions are needed to help fund the junior and novice development.

The other day I was visiting and discussing the cost of going down the road. When I bought my first car in 1990 fuel was $0.48 per litre. I had no idea how I was going to keep it filled with gas. To curb expenses I loaded it with as many cowboys and bronc saddles I could. Not only was the Dodge Aspen great transportation, but it made a pretty good bunkhouse. Later that fall, I had to catch a ride back to Lakeland College from the Hanna Pro Rodeo with announcer Dave Poulsen. As he drove, Dave discussed his worry about how the added cost of GST was going to affect the growth of rodeo in Canada. How were committees going to handle costs associated with the GST stock contractors, announcers, etc were going to have to charge? Here it is 24 years later. Rodeo and the costs are still plugging along, onwards and upwards!

In the recent “Who’s the Champion?” article, I suggested

associations could help smaller communities increase their entries if money won throughout the season and the finals declared the champion. When I was competing it was my goal to get to as many rodeos as I could each weekend. More rodeos meant diverse horses to hone my riding skills, along with more chances to win. Of the six associations I competed in, the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association was he only one that utilized points from the year and finals to declare the champion. What I did not like was how they paid out prize money.

Scholarships are a blessing to many students whom do not have the financial where withal to attend college or university. Montana State University, rodeo coach John Larick, offered me a scholarship opportunity in 1991. College rodeo has a structure and format that differed from regular rodeo. Regular rodeos consist of two or three performances, where a contestant competes once and then wins money upon placing in the top four. College rodeos have a long-go (one performance) and then the top 10 contestants from the long-go qualify to a short-go (finals). What annoyed me was how much the money was split up. Four places are paid in the long-go, four in the short-go and then another four in the average. Even when I beat future NFR

qualifiers Jess Martin and Shaun Stroh, winning the long and short go as well as the average, I did not win much. Money was split 12 ways versus the 4 ways in a regular rodeo payout.

Looking back, I realize my thinking was short sighted. On the upside, I was paying one entry fee and getting on two head of great stock, from renowned contractors Sankey and Kesler Rodeo Companies. The rodeo team paid for my hotel room, I was receiving a daily meal allowance and we travelled as a team to cut down fuel expenses. I did not win as much money, but my costs were lower.

Structure, format and scheduling of rodeos change. Mankota made a change following the vein of Beechy Western Days. Here is the listing from the CCA paper; For Timed Events Only: Timed events will run in Friday Performance and Saturday Slack. The Top 10 in each timed event will return and compete in the Saturday Performance. Admittedly, when I read the above, my first thought was “There they go splitting up the cash.”

At the recent Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association Convention, Canadian Western Agribition CEO Marty Seymour and I discussed the Mankota event. Of course, my view was go-rounds and average water down the payout. Marty pointed out, rodeos like Beechy and

Mankota are great for part-time contestants. Paying one entry fee and running two head of stock is appealing. He also suggested he would be pleased to place. A desirable event is one where he can park the trailer all weekend, hang out with family and get to know the bigger rodeo family. His coup de grace; contestants spend extra money in the community when in town for two days versus one.

Back in the day rodeos were produced this way. New York’s Madison Square Garden rodeo contained 16 performances and Jim Shoulders spoke about having to compete each day. History shows us that roughies, timies, committees and their families had more time to get to know one other.

Committees, the third idea to increase entries, hiring the right stock contractor. Contractors like Francis Rodeo Company. I had the opportunity to compete on their stock and now I get to work alongside them at the Moose Jaw Rough Stock School. Art Francis announced, to students of the school, when they enter the novice horse events at a Francis produced rodeo, their fees are covered. A family run outfit, working to build rodeo.

Scott's Blog June 8, 2014Man where does the time go?

Between work and rain not much time has been spent in the practice pen. Last week was a short week with some big rodeos to prepare for. Last weekend started off in Kindersley. The sand was deep but what's worse really, deep sand or concrete hard clay? I'll take sand! I made a decent run in the dogging and placed fourth. Tie Down roping I 8ed the tail and over flanked it so really I made almost every mistake possible ha! Team roping I broke out so no chance there.

Cadogan was a bust fresh calves sour steers that's about all I can say.

Unity was good, I knew I had drawn the the steer they were winning the dogging on so I knew he had to be good! I had a plan set there wasn't that maby good runs made as the steers were slow, I was going to see a good start then go get him and just make a solid run! Well I backed in the box and I guess I forgot that plan cause I just wanted him that bad!!!! Well I broke out and was 3.5 seconds, would have won but I was mad at myself "just go with your original plan I thought"! I missed my calf and missed my steer in team roping! Well that was a bust I thought but luckily I placed 6th last hole and winning a little there!

Once again rain stopped any practice, this week so I just had to rely on my training to hopefully be enough. Well it was!!!

We went to Warman Friday, it was all the same stock from Unity! Great thought maby I'll get lucky and get round two with old 88! Well I didn't draw him in the dogging! But I drew a good steer and made a solid 8 second run on him. The calves were AAAT running bred I seemed and man I never got a shot, dad roped a leg but that was a good start!

On to Eston for Saturday morning! We woke up as usual two hours before the rodeo to feed

horses, well there was no horses to feed! They must have got fighting and bent a pannel and broke the straps and were gone!!!! Well panic struck!!! We drove and drove trying to circle town and search for any sign of them! We had left one of our Ranch horses tied to the trailer for the night so I got on him and also started riding the fields. Well we found them walking about four miles west of Eston so panic slowly subsided as we got them caught and brought back to the arena with twenty minutes to spare before slack started. Well there was little warming up to do lol!

Slack went good for me, I finally roped a clean calf, and made a 10 second run! Finally a clean run I thought. Steer wrestling went well once again, I drew a tough steer to catch and made an average run on him and placed again!

Team roping was tricky there the steers are getting sour so there was some that run some that set and some that were good! I drew a average runner that checked off when you roped him and man he was heavy! Dad rolled in and roped doubles! I guess switching back to the soft head rope to heel with works for the old man!

We rode the ferry across to Lancer and boy the river is full! The attendant said he is hoping the level drops a little before the mountain runoff gets here as he says it will bring I an additional 2000 cubic meters per second, which would probably close him down for a while.

We watched the first performance, and dang things looked good! We got up Sunday morning and surprise the horses were still at the trailer! (We had tied up a couple of the older horses just to prevent another incident lol!) I drew a good group of cattle and made some good runs once again! Calves I followed my goal and just made a consistent run, my horse worked solid the calf kicked a little but was a good solid run overall! The dogging was good I drew a good steer definitely not one of the fast steers in the pen. When we left I was holding the leading time with a 5.2! In the team roping I spun another good steer for Dad who once again cleaned up two feet with the old head rope lol! We were placing fourth with that! So it was a good weekend for me!

Back to the grind once again for

the week! We are up Saturday in Pilot butte Saturday and Sunday in Radville. Hopefully I can get a few calves branded at home since we are only two hours from Pilot Butte.

I'd just like to thank everyone for the kind words and help when it came to rounding up my horses! It's nice to know everyone has your back on the rodeo trail!....

BTW.... Thanks Lenna for splurging on the candies for the entry office! It makes paying fees a little funner with a little sweet treat! Ha

Scott's Blog, June 16, 2014Another weekend is in the books!

It wasn't a great weekend for me by the results but it was a weekend for me to give credit to a man who started it all for me!

My Dad, Ross. He has supported me 100% in every way he could! He taught me what a good horse was and how to fix the not so good ones to make them winners! Since I was a small child dad kept me mounted on the best horses possible, and now that they are my horses I still look to dad for advice on new ones to buy and what I should do with them.

Over the years I have gotten lots of razzing about continuing to travel with my parents but truth be told who are better traveling partners than them!

They drive the tough times when I need that sleep, they help keep my focus on what needs to be done to find the winners circle.

When I'm in the rodeo arena or practice pen there is no other person who I want more than my dad to be hazing for me! There is a certain amount of trust you must have in your hazer and dad has never done me wrong! There is no better feeling at a rodeo or the end of a year when you ride into the rodeo arena and have your dad there either competing with you or hazing for you! There are few people out there who can truly appreciate what it means to do this life with your parents right beside you! The next time you want to laugh at a person who still "isn't weaned" maby think that they are the one with the advantage and possibly it's their family support that gives them that extra boost to get through rough weekends like I had this past one!

Scott’s Blog, July 7, 2014Where does the time go? It

seems like every day lately runs into another and before the week is gone then the first month of rodeo is under our belt and the truck just rolled over 300 000 km this week!

The last few weeks have been blessed with copious amounts of rain!! (Can you feel the sarcasm??) Not much practice or riding had gotten accomplished by myself. On the other hand my clients horses feet are looking good because I have been able to keep a consistent schedule on that!

The first month has gone according to plan for myself. I planned on concentrating on dogging this year and I have placed every weekend since April! Calves have been tough across the board with young talent coming from everywhere and perrenial favourites staying consistent as usual. My young gelding had felt the pressure coming up behind a season leader title, and the rain not allowing much for practice has him feeling slightly pressured!

I was asked a few weeks back, " how does it feel to go from winning a thousand dollars every weekend to winning a few hundred???" And to be frank I don't feel any different except when I look at my bank account, ha! But to be honest I was a realist going into this season my goal was and still is just to make the finals!

Team roping is starting to trim around for Dad and myself and no matter what it always means a bunch to get another one knocked down together!

People as a whole need to realize how to set realistic expectations, we all have dreams to follow and fulfil but don't expect them to happen over night!

There is going to be LOTS of blood, sweat, tears and joy along the journey!

And I believe if you are around people who don't believe in your dream or life plan, don't be around them, negativity won't help anyone!

2014 RODEO APPROVALS continued...CCA RODEO NEWS JULY 2014-PAGE 15

Page 16: CCA Rodeo News July 2014

n May 3 & 4, we were able to have the Build a Cowboy Bull and Steer riding school

in Mono, Ontario. The school was once again taught by Bill Thom, Alex Vanevery and Nick Goncalves. The weather was cold, wet and windy but we were lucky to have the wonderful indoor facilities donated to us by Dayna Hale. This year we had 10 bull riders and 8 junior steer riders participating. We had some new students, some returning ones and even some previous

junior steer riding students who returned to move on to bulls.

Saturday started with ground work on the stationary and drop barrels. After lunch we moved onto equipment and chute procedure. Then we were able to let the students try out their newly learned skills on livestock provided by Joe Shaw and Jason Terpstra. Every student rode at least once and many tried a few times. Then it was time to go over video footage and review each ride showing each student the things they did correctly

and what they could work on for future rides.

The following day brought just as much enthusiasm from all the students. The previous days lessons were reviewed and then we moved on to putting the skills to the test again. The students this year showed so much try and many rode multiple times again on Sunday.

Thank you to the CCA for the donation of permits to the new students and financial assistance. Thank you to Silver Spurs Medical Group for

providing paramedic services. Also, we would like to thank Ross Millar and Joe Shaw for the use of their chutes and panels. There were also countless volunteers who came out to help make the Build a Cowboy school a fun place to learn about a great sport!

We are looking forward to seeing the Build a Cowboy students along the rodeo trail this summer and seeing the sport of Bull Riding continue here in Ontario.

- Thanks-

Scott Sigfusson commented, in the May CCA Rodeo News, on the importance of respecting the volunteers whom make up rodeo committees. Canadian Professional Rodeo Association President Murray Milan did the same in the June edition of the Canadian Pro Rodeo News. Murray went onto say “We get to rodeo, not because we are entitled to it or deserve it – we get to rodeo because there are hundreds of volunteers in all these rodeo communities who give their time and effort to make those rodeos happen. “

As a teenager, I had the honor of becoming an Affiliate Member, Branch #92 Marshall, SK., of the Royal Canadian Legion. One of the ways our branch raised funds was working security at the Canadian Cowboys Association Finals held in Lloydminster. No one liked working the back doors and being harassed by cowboys trying to sneek in. I was asked to work one of the doors since I recognized many of the cowboys. Championship Sunday, the bang on my door revealed two bronc riders I looked up to. Neither qualified that year, though they did in future years. One would go on to qualify for the Canadian Finals Rodeo. Man, they tried every trick in the book, but did not get through my door. I am sure they spent a pile of money the night previous at the dance and Trailside Inn but they could not buy a seat?

Contestants, remember people are watching you. My Grandma Sinclair used to tell me “Be careful what you do, you never know where you might run into someone that knows you.” In Virden, MB in

2004 the top bull rider, as he was in the dressing room getting his gear ready to compete, pulled a case of beer out of his rigging bag. Guess he didn’t think the steer riders were looking up to him and his cronies. Not only were the steer riders watching them drink prior to competing, but they had to listen to the F-bombs getting dropped. I too learned to swear, chew, and drink, etc. by emulating my rodeo heroes.

When I speak to youth, I highlight the importance of presenting themselves in a professional manner. One way is by cleaning up tape and garbage off the dressing room floors and from behind the chutes. Please don’t spit wads of snuff into the urinals or other inappropriate places. Timed event hands, don’t tie or lope your horses in posted areas such as town parks. This happens at rodeos such as Milestone and Kindersley. Oh ya, Milestone does not hold a rodeo anymore. Wonder why?

Brandon, MB used to have a great pro rodeo in June. One year I travelled there with Colin Orr, Jay Humphrey and Cody McBride. While eating lunch at a local restaurant we got visiting with some older couples whom were part of an Airstream Camping Club. Guess they too were living the gypsy dream. It was our cowboy hats and boots that got us noticed. Had we been wearing Osiris shoes and Snapback caps they would not have given us a second look. They said they would come watch us compete. When I picked myself off the arena floor, after a short ride on a Kesler bronc, the first folks I seen were the ones from earlier that day. They were cheering like crazy!

A friend of mine is an RCMP officer and motor cross racer. He grew up in Saskatchewan, but never attended a rodeo. Our families got together for a performance of the Canadian Cowboys Association Finals in Regina. Now, I am not one to sit in the stands and watch. Usually I am viewing from the bucking chutes. It was an eye

opener to see his families’ excitement surrounding the extreme nature of our sport. The enthusiasm of his family was contagious. Watching the events he thought we were crazy .He could not fathom guys tying themselves onto large farm animals or jumping off horses trying to wrestle 500 pound bovines. I told him “I can’t believe you take a dirt bike over 20’ jumps and try to do it faster on the next lap!”

Travelling from a sales meeting on the east coast, for my second round horse at the Calgary Stampede, I was seated on the plane beside a rugby coach. The coach was flying from England, with his high school rugby club and headed to a tournament in Calgary. We visited about our respective sports and the post-secondary educational opportunities they allowed. He mentioned they were attending the Stampede the next day. I explained to him I was competing in The Wild Ride and when I got on stage I would say “Hi!” Joe Braniff was announcing and prior to the performance we organized what we would do. Those rugby players were up and cheering when I pointed them out in front of 18,000 fans.

Robin Burwash, the Calgary Stampede General Manager, invited me to accompany him visiting corporate sponsors in the sky boxes behind the bucking chutes. What a unique experience! Those fans were awed by the fact I received a Bachelor of Science Degree, while competing on a rodeo scholarship at Montana State University. It was pretty cool one of my bronc riding pictures was in the rodeo program and I was asked to autograph it for their kids.

Kids are integral part of building a future fan base for rodeo. Kamloops Pro Rodeo had one of the best slack performances I ever competed in. The novice events were in the Friday morning slack alongside the open timed events. School kids filled the venue, with their bodies, their energy and their voices. What

an awesome performance! We were just novice bronc riders, but felt like champions as kids asked us to autograph their programs. I trust the committee idea of giving those kids a free performance paid dividends. Hopefully the kids begged their parents to take them to the paid performance in the evening. Rodeos throughout the season and finals could learn from and expand on the concept.

Canadian Western Agribition has 3500 plus school kids in attendance, every day for the first number of days. Imagine what it would it look like to highlight the novice events or novice events/high school rodeo during the day with 3500 plus school kids watching? The Brandt Centre would be booming....

If we can get kids excited they will push and pull mom and dad. Speaking of mom, Wrangler is sponsoring a unique event, Chicks N Chaps. This is a women's only rodeo clinic with a cause; educating women about the sport of rodeo and giving proceeds to local community members suffering from the financial, physical, and emotional burdens of breast cancer. Most of these women have never seen a horse, a cowboy, or felt the rush of watching someone ride a two thousand pound animal. Chicks N Chaps teaches these women how to rope, ride, and have a great country time, all while raising money for breast cancer fighters and survivors. www.chicksnchaps.org

Contestants don’t get in the mindset of just showing up and competing. You have a lot of windshield time. Think about and discuss with your travelling partners how you can contribute to the growth and betterment of rodeo. Then forward your ideas, in a positive manner, to your directors and thank the volunteers.

The Canadian Cowboys Association is excited to partner up with its official Rodeo News graphic designer, Westar, to develop the Westar’s for Youth of Rodeo Mentorship Program.

Each month promising Youth of Rodeo will be recognized by Westar as a recipient of the Westar's Youth of Rodeo Mentorship Award. This award is given to a recipient in recognition of their dedication and determination for the sport of rodeo, and those selected will have their profile posted in the CCA Rodeo News newspaper, and, be given a free CCA Junior Membership Card.

Applications can be picked up from Westar at 1101 J Kramer Blvd, Regina SK, the Canadian Cowboys Association office, or go to www.westar.ca to fill out the brief questionnaire. The applicant is then screened for their involvement and passion for rodeo.

The Youth of Rodeo Mentorship Award allows everyone to celebrate the achievements of the young participants, as well as creating a platform to allow urban kids who are deeply interested in rodeo, to have exposure to young rodeo stars through meet and greets, and social media.
