Cooper Lighting and Security manufactures a widerange of Central battery systems for emergencylighting applications. Standard products includeAC/AC static inverter systems starting with a compactlow cost 500VA system ideal for providing a modularemergency lighting solution to minimise the amount ofwiring to the emergency luminaires, and rising to30KVA single phase systems. Cooper Lighting andSecurity also manufactures traditional AC/DC systems.

In addition to the range of systems which aredesigned for emergency lighting applications,the company also manufactures battery systems forother applications such as standby power suppliesor switchgear control.

There are many reasons for this, the main ones being:

a) Central battery installations are generally much easier to maintain than self contained installations and so, will often be the most cost effective solution once long term maintenance costs have been taken into account.

b) Central systems can be designed to run normal mains fittings at full output during both mains healthy and mains failed conditions.

On projects with large open areas, particularly those with high mounting heights, the use of mainsfittings operating at full output under emergency conditions can greatly reduce the number of emergency luminaires required.

A number of self contained emergency luminaires areavailable with a self test facility. This means that theluminaire automatically carries out regular functionaland discharge tests as well as continuously monitoringthe status of the battery, the charger and the incomingmains supply.

In the event of a fault occurring, the luminaire providesboth visual and audible indication designed to attractthe attention of maintenance personnel.

Self test luminaires enable the building user avoid thecost and disruption of manual testing and to enhancethe integrity of the emergency lighting system byproviding continuous monitoring of key parameterssuch as mains supply and charger status.

Many self contained luminaires can be furtherenhanced by the addition of Infra Red communicationbetween the luminaire and a hand held programmer.

The programmer is used to set up the fullyprogrammable test schedule for each luminaire,download the status of each luminaire and instigateeither a short functional or a full discharge manual testat any time if required.

Stand alone self test emergency lighting is ideal forsmaller projects, but for larger projects central testingsystems should be considered. Central testing systemsoffer the additional feature of central reporting of theemergency lighting system status.

Central Testing systems are ideal for larger projects.They carry out full automatic testing of the entireemergency lighting system including continuousmonitoring of parameters such as incoming mainssupply and battery charger status along with regularautomatic functional and discharge testing of theluminaires.

Addressing of the luminaires is by means of a handheld programmer which is simply pressed against thedata terminals of the luminaire to be programmed.The programmer incorporates an LCD display whichprovides visual confirmation that the interface hasbeen programmed correctly. The programmer can alsobe used to read back the address of a programmedluminaire.

Two types of Easicheck panel are available, one forself contained systems and one for slave luminaires,both types are suitable for use with either Menvier,or JSB luminaires and central battery systems.

Full system status is displayed at a central controlpanel by means of a two line LCD display and thevarious system indicator LEDs. For larger projects,a number of panels can be networked together.Systems can also be enhanced by the addition ofcomponents such as network printers and computermonitoring software.

For maximum flexibility it is possible to connect slaveand self contained panels on the same network.

A first fix ceiling plate is incorporated for ease ofinstallation, which can be either ceiling or wallmounted. Legends are ordered separately.
