    CC LIFE PRESIDENTS LETTER

  • The theme of this issue of CC Life magazine centers on how Christian liberal arts college graduates

contribute to their families, churches and to society

in general. The ability to make a contribution is

one of the outcomes of a Christian liberal arts

college program that can be summarized by 8 Cs

    that include Christian Character, Compassion/Car-

    ing, Communication, Critical Thinking, Creativity,

    Cooperation, Competence, and Contribution. The

fact that we expect Christs College graduates to

be able to make a contribution can also be seen in

the mission statement of the college which says

that one of the goals of our program is Training

students to go into the world and become Christs

ambassadors for change and competent Christian

leaders at church and in the marketplace guided by

a Christian world and life view.

Christian liberal arts college graduates contribute

to their families in numerous ways. We have heard

testimony from parents, who have sent their children

to Chris t s Col lege, of the changes that they

witnessed in their children and the improvement

of their relationships with their children because

of those changes. We have also seen the impact

that a Christian college education makes on students

as they graduate, get married and start families of

their own. Many Christs College graduates have

found their life partners at Christs College, and

attending a Christian college has given them the

families, making a contribution to the church and

    to the society.

The extent to which Christs College graduates

have impacted the church in Taiwan and the Chinese

church around the world is difficult to quantify, but

who are serving as church officers and workers,

those serving as missionaries, and those working at

Christian organizations such as Christian television

and radio stations, Christian hospitals and Christian

social service organizations. Through their service

in churches and organizations, Christs College

graduates have also made an impact on society. At

a recent fundraising event for the Grace Friendship

Centers, a Christian ministry that reaches out to

the poor and those who have nowhere else to turn,

Christs College alumni volunteered their time to

    organize, lead and provide music.

One way that Christs College graduates have

contributed to society is by looking at their careers

not only in terms of professional practice, but also

in terms of vocational calling. Over the years,

many Christs College students have chosen to

study English, and some who have graduated from

the English program have become English teachers.

,QWKHSDVWIHZ\HDUV&KULVWV&ROOHJHKDVHVWDEOLVKHGa Christian English Teachers Association to try

to help our graduates and other Christian English

teachers not only be good teachers, but also to think

about how to integrate their Christian faith with

their teaching, so that they see their teaching as the

ministry that God has given them to do. We know

of Christs College alumni who are contributing to

society and serving God in public and private el-

ementary schools, secondary schools, colleges and

universities throughout Taiwan. This is not limited

to the educational profession however, as Christs

College graduates continue to be Christs ambassa-

dors as they make a contribution to society through

business, through the arts, through media and in

    many other ways.

One important theme at Christs College is the idea of contribution. Our goal is to see students, faculty, and staff contributing in ways that make a difference in peoples lives. Our Capstone course for English majors is one way Christs College encourages students to make a contribu-tion. This senior level course encourages students to think through what they have learned at Christs College and what they will take with them when they graduate. During the Capstone class, students develop projects that express the values they have been learning at Christs College.

One Capstone student, Winny Hung, wanted to contribute to her family. For her Capstone project, she looked for ways she could help her familys business to grow. Winny found that a shop next door to her familys existing business PLJKWVRRQEHDYDLODEOH6KHUHVHDUFKHGWKHFRVWVLQYROYHGin acquiring the shop, buying furniture, hiring an extra employee, and increasing the product line of the business.

6KHPHWZLWKIDPLO\PHPEHUV WKURXJKRXW WKHSURFHVVIRUtheir ideas on the steps needed to make the business grow.

Another student, Jack Chuang, wanted a project that would contribute to Christs College. Jack came up with the idea of painting the halls in the mens dormitory. This would add more color, making the dormitory a better place WR OLYH ,Q GRLQJ WKH SURMHFW KH GHYHORSHG D SODQ FKRVHthe colors, and recruited students to make the painting a WHDPHIIRUW:KHQWKHSURMHFWZDVQLVKHGWKHKDOOVZHUHbrighter, and students felt that they had made a difference at Christs College.

Another example of contribution has come from short-term faculty members like Roger Rowe, the current teacher of the Capstone course. Roger, a retired college professor and his wife Linda have volunteered to come teach in the English program and invest their lives in the

Our music students have not only made progress in their professional field in these past four years, but they have also learned something that is valuable for a lifetime - how to support, trust and love each other. For the students to fuse together, they have had to sacrifice themselves and put themselves in inconvenient situations in order to accomplish bigger goals as a group rather than as individuals. Theyve learned to set up appropriate boundaries, to understand the needs of others, and to sharpen their problem-solving skills. No matter how different everybody was at the beginning, they have walked together and developed supportive relationships with one another.

  • Preface:

At this turning point in the history of Christs

College, we can look back and see the value of

its existence holistic caring and mission work.

As a boarding school, Christs College provides

excellent liberal arts education and cares for

the people of Taiwan. Students from Christs

College are remarkable because they have been

taught to love God and to pass His love on to the

people of Taiwan. Those students are expected

to enter society with the ability to communi-

cate with different generations, and to make

passing Gods love on them a lifelong goal. Not

only can they reach the deepest level of peoples

needs, they can also make to a goal to have a

    ``Hebrews 10:22~24

great personality, to make a great contribu-

tion and to communicate Gods love to those

people. We believe having our students reach

these goals is the reason of why many teachers

have dedicated themselves to this school. Our

students love this school deeply because of its

educational environment and because of the

way the faculty and staff have shared in their

lives. For both the education Christs College

provides and the contribution the faculty and

staff make, Christs College is a school that is

worthy to be known, cared for and supported.

I believe that the future of Christs College will

be even more glorious than its past has been.

Over the past few years, Professor Nations research has had a significant impact on the teaching and course design in the English Department at Christs College. The faculty have been drawn to Professor Nations work because of his consistent focus on what helps learners. He never dismisses or advocates a teaching methodology simply because it is, or is not, currently in fashion. Professor Nation constantly tests the validity of his own beliefs, and he is delighted to have others challenge his beliefs with research because that means the language teaching profession is making progress.

The English Department has had a long involvement with EFL teachers at local schools and universities. EFL teachers from all levels came for Professor Nations seminar. They and the faculty and students of Christs College came away inspired.

They came with sincere hearts, professional skills, and abundant food service experiences to provide quality food for the college. Fresh people bring a new outlook, so since their arrival, going to the cafeteria to eat has become a popular trend on cam-pus. From our students and staff, we often hear how delicious WKHIRRGLV6RPHWLPHVRXUVWXGHQWVZRXOGDVN0V&KRRU&KHILu whats for dinner just like kids ask their moms after school. They have taught DURXQGVWXGHQWZRUNHUVKRZWRXVHWKHIDFLOLWLHVLQWKHNLWFKHQsafely as they help out and earn some spending money to support themselves. During the recent winter break, Chef Lu and Ms. Lu attended a winter mission trip with our students to Tai-An Towh-ship in Miaoli. They enjoyed serving the Lord with brothers and sisters in Christ at the local church.
