PETER PETER TEMPLE TEMPLE WINS DUNCAN LA WINS DUNCAN LA WRIE D WRIE DA GGER GGER Congratulations to Australian Peter Temple on winning the Duncan Lawrie Dagger, the world’s most prestigious award for crime fiction for The Broken Shore (352pp Pb $22.95). Formerly known as the Golden Dagger, past winners of this award include literary giants John le Carré, Ian Rankin and Patricia Cornwell. Short-listed against well- known writers James Lee Burke, Gillian Flynn and Giles Blunt, Temple thought his chances of winning were slim. “You’re up against some of the world’s best crime writers in English. I was proud enough just to be the first Aussie to make the shortlist, let alone win.” The Broken Shore, Temple’s 8th novel, was described by judges as “a well-written crime novel with excellent characterisation mingled with a subtle exploration of contemporary Australian landscape and mores. This is a first class read with a sympathetic, engrossing police protagonist.” Until recently, it had not been printed in the UK as it was “too Australian”. Temple has won five Ned Kelly awards and is the first Australian to win a Gold Dagger. The Duncan Lawrie International Dagger for the best crime novel translated into English has for the second year running been won by the writer/translator team of Fred Vargas and Sîan Reynolds, this time for Wash This Blood Clean from My Hand (see page 9, Pb $29). Newcomer Gillian Flynn achieved remarkable success with Sharp Objects (Pb $29), winning both the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger and the New Blood Dagger. It is a tribute to the broad appeal of her book that it was singled out by three separate panels of judges, acting independently. The CWA Dagger in the Library is awarded to “the author of crime fiction whose work is currently giving the greatest enjoyment to readers”. Authors are nominated by UK libraries and readers’ groups and judged by a panel of librarians. The winner this year was Stuart MacBride. “His books tell of life in all its grim reality, but this only adds to the appeal of this truly impressive new author... the grimmest of subjects, but leavened (thankfully) with dashes of humour. He’s bad news for the Aberdeen tourist industry, but great news for crime readers.” The Cartier Diamond Dagger, for sustained excellence in the genre of crime writing, was won by John Harvey. - Ann CW CW A D A DA GGER GGER AW ARDS 2007 ARDS 2007 (25 JUL (25 JULY - 31 Y - 31 AUGUST) UGUST) Books Alive is on again and Abbey’s is celebrating by giving away a brand new free book!
