Suite from Warriors of Heaven and EarthThis epic Chinese movie, by the director He Ping, brought a
suitably epic score from maestro Rahman, fusing Chineseelements with glorious sweeping melodies.
Theme lrom LagaanThis is the main theme from Ashutosh Gowariker's acclaimedOscar nominated movie, which sees the people of a smallvillage in Victorian lndia stake their future on a game of cricketagainst their ruthless British rulers. From the opening trumpetcall, to the rhythmic chanting of the choir singing "Re BhaiyyaChoote Lagaan", Rahman's score brings all the dramatictension of the film to life.
Chaiyya ChaiyyaThis is the hit song from Mani Ratnam's movie Dr7 Se, whichwas also used in Rahman's stage musical Bombay Dreams.Given a brand new orchestral setting here, with an introductionfrom Bombay Dreams, it features Shin DCS in his firstappearance of the evening. ln a BBC World Service poll for themost popular songs of all time, Chaiyya Chaiyya came 9th!
Suite from The Rising: The Ballad of Mangal PandeyThe film tells the tale of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 and the partof the freedom fighter Mangal Pandey in that uprising. Thescore is full of the passion and turmoil of the film, with theorchestral brass section particularly featured here, reflectingthe military subject matter.
Cry of fhe Rose trom RojaThe beautiful melodies of Thamizha Thamizha and thesoothing waves of Kadhal Rojave are woven together here in
an orchestral setting, featuring the lndian Flute playing of LisaMallett. This was Rahman's cinematic debut - and what a
debut. ln 2008, Time Magazine named his soundtrack to Ro7'a
as one of the ten best of all time.
Suite from Robot (Enthiran)Robot, the highest grossing lndian film ever, is a 2010 sci-fiaction film directed by Shankar and starring Rajinikanth andAishwarya Rai. The score is bombastic and energetic, matching the high-octane action sequences, though there arealso some beautiful reflective moments, once again highlightingRahman's gift for melody.
Nahi Samne lrom TaalMeaning in Hindi "your absence", Nahi Samne is a song takenfrom the 1999 romance Taal.lt marked the beginning of a longcollaboration for AR with the director Subhash Ghai. Sung hereby Shin DCS, it has a beautiful lilting melody and an air ofmelancholy so befitting the lovesick nature of the lyric.
Suite from 127 HoursA very different score from maestro Rahman accompanies thismovie. His second collaboration with director Danny Boyle,
after the huge success of Slumdog Millionaire, sees Rahmanshowing the range of his compositional skills. ln a veryatmospheric and beautiful score, we are transported to BlueJohn Canyon in southern Utah, where a climber is trappedbeneath a boulder and has 127 hours to decide his fate.Effective use of the clarinets in the orchestra sets the lonelyscene wonderfully.

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Made in BirminghamSir Edward Elgar conducted the inaugural concert of the Cityof Birmingham Orchestra in November 1920. Over the ninedecades since, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra(CBSO) has grown into a 90-piece ensemble with aworldwide reputation - but one rooted firmly in the City ofBirmingham.
Under the direction of such conductors as Adrian Boult,
Andrzej Panufnik and Louis Fr6maux, the Orchestra'sreputation grew steadily. But it was the 18-year leadership ofSir Simon Rattle that truly put the CBSO - and Birmingham -on the international musical map. Since his departure in
1998, the CBSO has continued to flourish and grow, firstunder the baton of Sakari Oramo and since September 2008under the charismatic young Latvian Andris Nelsons. Nelsonsnow leads an outstanding artistic team which includesprincipal guest conductor Edward Gardner, associateconductor Michael Seal, and chorus director Simon Halsey.
As the resident orchestra of Symphony Hall, Birmingham, the CBSO has a wide reaching programme of music rangingfrom Beethoven to Bollywood, symphonic and contemporaryclassical, as well as a lighter series of Friday Night classics, and concerts that the whole family can enjoy. lt works withsome of the best artists such as Jonas Kaufmann, MitsukoUchida and lan Bostridge, alongside up-and-coming talentsand even personalities such as Sue Perkins and AlanTitchmarsh.

Several discs have been released sofar, featuring music by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Shostakovichand Richard Strauss, and several more are due for releaselater this year.
ln the CommunityThe CBSO's learning and participation work reaches over35,000 people each year in diverse communities across theWest Midlands, and ranges from projects bringing music tonurseries in disadvantaged areas of the city, to workdeveloping the next generation of talented young musicians.
