CBOLA Applied Learning Project:

How Do Banner Accounts Receivable & Finance Modules Fit Together With SUNY URAS and other SUNY Finance Systems?

HELPING CAMPUSES CONNECT THE DOTS

Rebecca ODonnellSUNY Oneonta

WHY

WHEN I TRIED TO CONNET THE DOTS

HOW DID IT GET THIS WAY?

Departures and Retirements at campuses, SICAS and System Admin (knowledge – out the door!)

Changes in Technology

Changes in Requirements/Policies & Procedures

Compounded with:

SICAS – programmers who are NOT accountants

SUNY Controller’s Office – accountants who are NOT programmers NOR do they even use or have access to Banner

FIVE SYSTEMS

Banner – the Student Information System used by campuses

SUNY Uniform Revenue Accounting System (URAS)

SUNY Business Intelligence (BI)

SUNY Financial Management System (FMS)

New York Statewide Financial System (SFS)

THREE KEY STAKEHOLDERS

Campus Accounting Offices and constituents

SUNY Controller’s Office

SICAS Center

WHO and WHAT

World Record Connect the Dots: Mona Lisa, 6,239 Dots by Thomas Pavitte

GOALS

FIVE OVERARCHING GOALS & DESIRED OUTCOMES

Bring Campus Accounting Offices together to converse/share info

Alleviate the fear of “breaking Banner” – enable users

Develop best practices

Develop standardized reporting to SUNY Controller’s Office

Assist SICAS Center with testing and development

PLANNING AND EXECUTION

BUILDING THE NETWORK

Surveys with StakeholdersWhat would they each like to see accomplished

Researched different communication platformsHow can I best reach everyone

Who is willing to contribute

INITIAL TRAINING

Training at ABB meetings

Recorded trainings on Workplace

Open conversations on Workplace

Training at the SICAS Center

Individual training

PROGRESS

2 hour in person training at ABB – 40+ in attendance

3 video trainings posted to Workplace

4 posts to workplace 47 Members Each video and post average approximately 30 views but very

little engagement My phone is ringing off the hook and my email is blowing up

All positive feedback (there’s always that one person who is unhappy though)

Conversations have been started

I’ve been able to connect campuses who can help each other

A LOT of work left to be done

OUTCOMES/DELIVERABLES SO FAR

LEADERSHIPSKILLS

THINGS I WAS MINDFUL OF BECAUSE OF LEADERSHIP TRAINING

• Leading across generations

• Leading those who are not willing to contribute

• Include, engage and empower!! In that order!

• Delivering – how people learn differently

SURPRISES ALONG THE

WAY

How badly some campuses need help

How much the Controller’s Office needs this

The number of people who have not actively participated

The extent of participation by those who are participating

The time involved

I shouldn’t have shared my contact information (just kidding)

How incredibly FUN its been

WHAT SURPRISED ME?

GOING FORWARD

AN ONGOING PROJECT

This is not a project with an end date

Additional in person trainings for the coming months are in the works

Posts on workplace will continue on a regular basis

I hope to get more people/campuses actively involved

I hope to get more offices outside of accounting offices involved

A number of efficiencies will be in place across campuses and best practices will be shared and in use

NO ONE should be afraid to ask for help
