From the Rabbi
Summer has always been my favorite season. Reflecting back to my childhood, I vividly remember how much I enjoyed the long days of sunlight stretching into the early evening, the more leisurely pace that school vacation provided, and the
exuberance of being at the beach. Even in St. Petersburg, where so much of what we do is driven by our work responsibilities, the mood of summer is mellow. Summer offers many opportunities to revisit our Jewish identity and to expand our Jewish horizons. Some suggestions for consideration follow: 1. Shabbat still occurs every seventh day. Why not plan a different
format for Friday evening, as we welcome a summer Shabbat? A picnic in the lush outdoors could be delightful – and menu options are many. We do not need the formality of a dining room to welcome Shabbat.
2. At CBI we pride ourselves on our Glimpses into Jewish History series on Friday evenings at 7:30 pm and our guest speakers on Shabbat mornings. Over the years, many of the presentations have been exceptionally memorable. As the Talmud puts it, “Come and hear”!
3. If you have the good fortune of traveling, more often than not there is a Jewish site of interest at your destination. Stop and visit, as you gain new awareness of Jewish culture, history, and the Jewish impact on our world.
4. Every time I walk into a bookstore, I marvel at the many new books published on a broad range of Jewish motifs. For those slower summer moments, why not select and read one or two of them?
5. The causes and needs of our society continue even in summer. Please remember that giving tzedaka, supporting a worthy endeavor, as attending a Daily Minyan is always in fashion, independent of the season.
6. Finally, add a spiritual lift to each summer day by saying the Shema – wherever you are.
We say Todah rabbah and best wishes to Sara Latham who has served us with distinction as our Executive Director for the last nine years. We wish her all the best as she begins a new chapter in her life. Please join us on Shabbat morning, June 16 as we pay tribute to Sara for her many years of service at CBI. We welcome our new Executive Director, Michael Grossman to our CBI family. Please introduce yourself and welcome him to CBI. Have a safe and meaningful summer!
Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski
Shabbat evening services at the Berlin Concert Hall, as we recreate the grandeur and splendor of the German Jewish musical tradition, and meld it with the American Jewish Musical tradition.
Shabbat morning services at the New Synagogue, a historic
synagogue that survived Kristallnacht, but was partially destroyed in WWII. Here we will also honor women cantors and rabbis in the same place where the first woman rabbi was ordained in 1938.
A Cantorial and Interfaith Concert at the Berliner Cathedral Dome, the largest Protestant church in Europe.
A ceremony at Munich Olympic Park, honoring the memory of the Israeli athletes that were assassinated during the 1972 Olympic Games. Special guests will include nine time Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Spitz.
Memorial service at the Dachau concentration camp. We will also have Jewish and general sightseeing tours of Berlin, Potsdam and Munich, and a Fourth of July celebration in Munich. More details when I return.
B’Shalom, Cantor Jonathan Schultz
First, I would like to say that I am excited to have the opportunity to bring back the CBI volunteer choir for Selichot, Erev Rosh Hashanah, and Kol Nidrei night. Anyone who would like to sing with the choir, please contact me at
[email protected], or by phone at (727) 381-4900 x305. Choir rehearsals will begin in the second week of July, and we will rehearse one night a week. Which night of the week is TBA at the moment, I will update all of you within the coming weeks once I determine on which night of the week rehearsals will be held. I would also like to take this opportunity to tell you about the upcoming Cantors Assembly Mission to Germany, in which I will be participating from June 27 to July 5. I will write in more detail about my experiences after I return, but I would like to give you a preview of some of the highlights:
Opening night concert honoring the legacy of the great German cantors and composers, with over 100 Cantorial voices and local choirs participating.

Executive Director
As I write this article I am filled with many emotions. It was approximately 30 years ago that I served as USY President of the CBI SPUSY chapter. I feel very honored to have been able to hold both of those positions at CBI. I am excited and nervous to become President of
CBI. I am sure I will make some mistakes and may even make some of you, my fellow congregants, unhappy as I try to serve in this position to the best of my ability. I guarantee that you will not be able to question my commitment or effort. There is also a high likelihood that I will shed a tear or 2 on my presidential journey-this will not come as a surprise to those who know me well. I want to thank Leslie Pearlstein, a real mensch for his creativity that helped the Executive Committee refocus and reorganize. It will be my honor to work with such a dedicated group of Officers and Board of trustees. There are so many positive things happening at CBI. We will be celebrating 90 years of Conservative Judaism in St. Pete. Have you been to Jewish Meditation or Joyful prayer yet? Our new website is being developed with many more user friendly features. Cantor Schultz is bringing us new melodies. The A team is back up and running.
From the President
I want to personally challenge each of you to find something new and great about CBI. Once you find it, share it with your friends. CBI will benefit from your involvement. I would love to hear from you about what CBI can do to improve and how you will help make that happen. I am honored to be the President of CBI and want to thank you for all of the support and encouragement you have already given to me.

Women’s League of CBI
ANNOUNCING OUR NEW NAME!!!
Sisterhood of Congregation B’nai Israel is now officially known as Women’s League of Congregation B’nai Israel. This change was discussed and requested by the International Women’s League organization in order to help with the identity of all of the member groups. Thank you to all who participated in our annual meeting and came out to have fun and vote. Thank you to all of the Officers and Board of Directors of Women’s League of Congregation B’nai Israel who have volunteered and are listed below.

As the year draws to an end, MMC members can look back at an active and enjoyable year, one that was also satisfying in knowing the contributions we were privileged to make.
I’d like to make sure I publicly salute my fellow officers for their support and effort throughout the year. A special tip of the Bosox beanie to Phil Redisch, Mark Reiskind, Larry Ettinger, Bill Marger and Alan Gross for their dedication and persistence.
At our recent planning meeting, it was decided that the Men’s Club will expand its role at CBI next year, bringing our members additional opportunities for fun and supporting other CBI activities and organizations. Look for detailed announcements as we head into the next year. (MMC is on the same fiscal year as CBI which begins July 1st.)
Most of what we do and deem to be successful would not be so without the attendance and support of CBI members. And we thank you for that. The 2 biggest social events of the year are Men’s Club sponsored: the Passover BBQ and the ever-fabulous Mothers’ Day Brunch. It’s a great base on which to build.
If you’re a man and you’re not a member, you should be. Have a wonderful, safe summer.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH
“Shehecheyanu- Who has kept us alive, sustained us and
brought us to this moment…” This blessing is one of the most important ones. I remember my Mother saying it to me when I got a new outfit. It is recited as well when tasting a fruit for
the first time in the season or moving into a new house. We say it on the first night of Chanukah, hearing the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, before reading the megillah on Purim and the Kiddush for festivals. This blessing has so much meaning for everyone…it is no wonder that it is recited by the family after the Haftarah is completed at a Bar Mitzvah! So at the beginning of the next year at PRTT I would like families to recite this blessing with their children. Hopefully, everyone will have a safe summer, be mindful of doing mitzvoth for others and approach the new
school year starting on August 26th with a more positive attitude! I am interested in presenting a new and more stimulating curriculum and suggestions are always welcome! Please review your Hebrew and prayers. If anyone wants Hebrew books or study materials please contact me at the office. Kayitz Na’eem---Have a Pleasant Summer
Ilana Dayan, Education Director
THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL
Summer time is fun time at Pauline Rivkind Preschool. We put away our “heavy” curriculum and concentrate on our senses. We spend more time outside playing and exploring nature. We also have water play during these hot summer months! Our themes are sporty and national. This fits in perfectly this year with the summer Olympics. The preschool will have its own Olympics with races and competitions, medals and all! Children ages one year through five years may still register for a week or a month for the summer sessions. Please contact the preschool office for more information. It is also not too late to register for the fall term. Pauline Rivkind Preschool has the reputation of being one to the best preschools in St. Petersburg. Our children entering kindergarten last year scored the highest on their entrance testing. This information can be found on the Florida Department of Education web site. We offer fun, caring, learning experiences for children beginning as young as one year old. Our program continues through the VPK FREE program for children who are four years old by September 1, 2012. There is no better place to start your child’s education than Pauline Rivkind Preschool at Congregation B’nai Israel. Tell your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors! Contact the preschool office at 302-9668.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT Have you ever wondered...? What is Dine and Dash? Dine and Dash is a program for USYers and 8th graders, who meet on Wednesday evenings to learn. A light dinner is available beginning at 6:00pm. The Dine and Dash provide the perfect opportunity for the kids to schmooze with their Jewish friends during their busy school week. There is no cost to attend but sponsorships are available for only $36.00. Who is Pauline Rivkind? Pauline Rivkind, a CBI member, was a soft spoken kind hearted woman who owned a local florist shop in the late 1950’s until her death in 1967. She loved children and taught in the Sunday school. She saw a need to develop a preschool at CBI and took it upon herself to make it happen. What is Gesher Convention? Gesher Convention is a Hanegev Region convention just for 8th graders, held in the spring, and is designed to prepare these Kadimaniks for the next four years as USYers. Which states make up Hanegev Region? Hanegev is the Southeast region of United Synagogue Youth and consists of the following states: Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. What are the three Sub Regions in USY and which are we in? Three sub-regions make up Hanegev: Arvot (South Florida) Mercaz (Central and North Florida) and the rest of the region is Ein Gedi. WE are MERCAZ. What are the Schmooze Lips? Schmooze Lips is the mascot for the wonderful sub-region of Mercaz. The Schmooze Lip award is a way for the chapters in Mercaz to be awarded for their pure amazement throughout the year! The way that chapters can win the award at the end of each year is by participating in sub-regional activities such as talent competitions, Tikkun Olam coin challenges, and be leaders at conventions. In the past four years SPUSY has won the prestigious Schmooze Lip Award! And what is SPUSY? SPUSY is US! St. Pete USY! How can we explain USY? "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. From the inside looking out, you can't explain it."

Supporting Israel Helps CBI This is graduation season. Permit me to suggest a meaningful gift that benefits many.
Your attention is directed to the fantastic opportunity to perform a triple mitzvah in supporting the Jewish National Fund (JNF), Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI), and the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ).
Please visit our shul’s website (www.cbistpete.org) or read the shul’s weekly E-News email. In each, you’ll find a section that allows us to perform these mitzvot.
Buy or donate through the JNF/United Synagogue button on the CBI website home page or in the E-News email – from your purchase or gift, 20% will return to CBI and another 5% will go to USCJ to support congregational Israel programs.
The button looks like this:
You can: – Plant Trees in Israel in honor of friends or loved ones. – Make a donation to any of JNF's many projects in Israel. Purchase anything from the JNF store.
JNF is LAND in Eretz Yisrael. Donation opportunities include: Sderot Indoor Recreation Center, Alleviating Israel’s Water Crisis, Israel Education Programs, Forestry Management and Fire Prevention, New Communities in the Negev, Tourism and Recreation Sites, etc. The Tampa Bay JNF’s current projects include Aleh (caring for Israel’s severely disabled), Carmel Forest restoration, and Friends of Israel Firefighters (purchasing life-saving equipment for Israel’s first responders to any emergency).

BUNS FAMILY LIBRARY
EDUCATION
Hazak, Hazak, V’Nithazek! As your Torah reader at CBI for nine years, I look forward to the beginnings and conclusions of each of the five books of the Torah. Why do we all say at the end of each book, “Hazak, Hazak, V’Nithazek?” The meaning of the phrase is “Be strong. Be strong, and let us summon up our strength!” This is a wish for spiritual strength that originally comes from King David to his general Joab before battle (Samuel 2- 10:12). It was used originally for physical and military prowess and now to a wish for spirituality. The Sefardim say instead, “Hazak u-varukh!- Be strong and blessed!” Another phrase is said after an aliyah is “Yishar (Yasher) koach” meaning “May your strength be firm.” In the back of the Etz Hayim there is an article by Jeffrey H. Tigay explaining this custom. He writes, “Because reading the Torah is a form of learning, some interpret the exclamation as encouragement to persist in learning the Torah. Others understand it as encouraging and wishing strength for the Torah reader because serious learning of the Torah—including accurately preparing the public reading with all of its vocalization, punctuation, and cantillation—can be exhausting. “Our congregants want to be included in these wishes.” Preparing a Torah reading is demanding if you think that you are carrying a tradition, chanting before God and the congregation and learning the precious words of the Torah. It is important that proper study should take place before ascending the Bimah for this special Mitzvah. As the article in the Etz Hayim summarizes: “Hazak—More power to you, Torah reader, who has worked so hard to read the Torah accurately and pleasantly! Hazak—Congratulations to you, the person who has the final aliyah of the book! V’nithazek—May you and we persist, study, read, and complete all the other books, drawing strength from the Torah!”

Chavurah Aleph initiated CBI’s Music Library Fund years ago, and continues to encourage CBI members to increase their utilization of this wonderful resource within our facility. This fund has provided for the purchase of new CD equipment to enable listeners to enjoy the collection of Jewish music. The Library is open during synagogue office hours. We encourage donations to the CBI Music Library. The Chavurah has already begun to add more CD’s to the Buns Family Library.
Some of the recently added titles are: “The Magnificent Maccabee”, sung by the River Choir, Santa Rosa, CA
“Paul Shapiro’s Ribs and Brisket Review”, Yiddish, bop, swing and comedy novelty songs and music “My Shtetele Soroke” Yiddish songs of the Ukraine by Arkady Gendler
“Songs of the Bible”, in Hebrew The Hertzl Jewish Day School Choir” sings a variety of Jewish songs
“Across the River” by Sam Glazer “Kol Bamidbar (A Voice in the Desert)” by Sam Glazer, featuring a children’s choir
“The Jewish Experience- Chanukah”, narrated by Theodore Bikel “Old Jews Telling Jokes”, directed by Sam Hoffman, 18 joke tellers with Klezmer music backup
Chavurah Aleph and the Library Committee urge you to make time to visit the CBI Library soon, and relax
and listen to quality Jewish music at your own convenience.

Does your child or grandchild have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or special occasion coming up? What a great way to
honor them!
Also makes a great “group gift” for a special occasion. Order forms are in the synagogue office and lobby.
Minimum donation $254.
