It is exciting times at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. As a result of lots of hard work and support from the community, Mayor, City Council, city staff and the Friends of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Foundation Board, we are witnessing the results of everyone’s efforts to pass the 6th Penny ballot that enabled the expansion of the Gardens. The foundation of the Conservatory is in place and the walls will soon be erected. On behalf of the Foundation Board, I would like to thank the com-munity for their continued support of the Gardens.

I hope you were able to visit the Gardens this summer and fall. The staff and vol-unteers worked tirelessly to ensure they looked their best and thanks to the cooper-ation of the weather the Gardens do look incredible. We are so fortunate to have this amenity in a community our size.

The Gardens are much more than just a Garden. They enrich the lives of every member of the community with educational programs for adults and children, a des-tination for seniors, disabled individuals and at-risk youth by offering opportunities to volunteer and participate in mentoring programs. We have visitors from all 50 states and over 24 foreign countries.

Imagine visiting the tropics without going through TSA at an airport. The new conservatory will create a much-needed tropical oasis for Laramie County residents to escape to on those chilly winter days. The Foundation Board has dedicated the next two years to making the new conservatory a treasure that this community will be proud of for many years. If you are not already, I hope you will consider a Membership in our Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Foundation. It is a great investment with many benefits.

Thank you again for all your support and helping us “Grow Our Gardens.”

Science is Funwith CLF&P’s Summer of Power

Cheyenne Light Fuel & Power generously sponsored the Summer of Power program again this year at the Paul Smith Children’s Village.

Themed on the four ancient elements – earth, wind, fire and water, the 2015 Summer of Power series, our 5th annual, kicked off with the community planting over 2,000 annuals, reintroduced old favorites such as the community squirt gun fights and introduced some new classics – like Moths After Dark and Wind Art.

“We remain grateful for the continued support of Chey-enne Light, Fuel & Power for assuring a consistent, free and educational series of programs exist for our visitors. This year it also allowed me to play the classic soul music of Earth, Wind and Fire - and it actually made sense,” says Aaron Sommers, CBG Education Director.

Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power’s Director of Gas and Electric Operations, Shirley Welte finds this partnership very valuable to the community, “We’re grateful for our partnership with the Bo-tanic Gardens and Children’s Village and support their mission to beautify and enrich our com-munity. Every summer, families who take part in the ‘Summer of Power’ series, walk away with a better understanding of renewable energy and sustainable solutions.”

The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens is introducing a new program for busy adults about all topics relevant to the CBG, called Graze and Grow.

Development Director, Tina Worthman is eager for this series, she says, “The staff of the Botanic Gardens are experts in their fields, and many of them have specific horticulture related interests that others will find fascinat-ing. This is the perfect opportunity to share this information with the community.”

These programs will be on the second Tuesday of each month from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. in the classroom of the Paul Smith Chil-dren’s Village.

The charge for each session is $10, unless you are a member of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Foundation. Members can attend them free of charge.

A single membership at CBG is $35, a couple is $45, and a fami-ly membership is $75. For more information on CBG membership, you can call 637.6458 or go to www.botanic.org.

Proceeds from memberships allow the Gardens to create new

landscapes, enhance existing gardens and grounds, endow special projects and support our volunteer programs.

Below is a list of scheduled programs, which are subject to change. We will continue to have updates on this program.

Your Local Harvest: Community Gardens

A great opportunity for local residents is to rent a plot in the Botanic Gardens’ Community Gardens.

The CBG operates two community gardens on our site in Lions Park: the North Community Garden and the South Community Gar-den. Demand to participate in these gardens is often so high that we are unable to fulfill every request, and there is often a waiting list. There is a nominal fee to have a garden and gardeners are expected to maintain their plot in good condition throughout the season.

In this program, the Botanic Gardens will provide water, tools as well as the garden plot. The Gardens staff will also till, compost and prepare the garden beds before the planting season.

For more information on our Community Garden Program or to be placed on the waiting list to participate next year, please contact Bailey Hallwachs at 637.6458 or [email protected].

New Faces at the Gardens!Nettie Eakes is the Assistant Education Coordinator at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. She moved

here from Auburn, Alabama, where she was born and raised. She graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Horticulture. Before coming to Cheyenne, she was working with a non-profit called Storybook Farm in Opelika, AL that facilitates equine assisted riding for children with special needs. Before moving to Cheyenne, she was working to develop a horticulture program for the farm to sup-plement the therapeutic activities already taking place.

Nettie says, “My love for people, especially kids, and the well-being that horticulture promotes, has grown throughout my education and career, which led me to a career in Horticultural Therapy.” Horticultural Therapy is the use of horticulture and horticultural processes to achieve mental, emo-tional, and physical therapeutic goals with a client and/or demographic. She just recently completed her certificate with the Horticultural Therapy Institute in order to become a registered Horticultural Therapist.

Nettie adds, “I am a huge Auburn fan and I like spending my free time outside with my dog, Dolly.”

A native of Wyoming, Eric Roadifer is our new part-time “Jack of all trades.” He was born in Lander, Wyoming and grew up in Pine Bluffs, where he lives today. He is a graduate of the University of Wyoming with a degree in Business Administration.

Eric became familiar with the Gardens when he started working as a visitor services vol-unteer in May 2014. Eric says his favorite part of working at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens is that almost every visitor is happy they came to look at the grounds and the conservatory.

In his spare time, he enjoys writing, brushing up on Japanese and studying for IT certifi-cations.

Can you help a Botanic Gardens intern?Would you be willing to offer a rental at a dis-

count? Or would you like to host one of the three summer inters from mid-May through mid-August? If so, please contact Allie Byrd Skaer, CBG Assistant Director at 307.637.6458 or [email protected].

Our lovely volunteer, Joyce Dill, with a bountiful harvest from one of the beds at the Botanic Gardens.

Horticulturist Tyler Mason Receives Prestigious Garden Scholarship

CBG horticulturist, Tyler Mason, recently received $9000 for The Chanticleer Scholarship in Professional Development, which offers public garden professionals financial support for academic training to improve their leadership skills.

Tyler is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Agricul-ture at Colorado State University. Botanic Gardens Director Shane Smith says Tyler’s initiative to further his education will benefit not only himself, but also the Gardens. In working with Tyler, Shane adds, “Tyler demonstrates initiative, teamwork, and commitment as he collaborates with co-workers, manages the grounds, leads garden workshops, and supervises volun-teers.”

The Chanticleer Scholarship program is aimed at individu-als who are in, or hope to move into, leadership positions and feel a need for more training and exposure. The Chanticleer Foundation offers this scholarship in the belief that a stron-ger and more creative staff results in better public gardens, gardens that focus on their missions and capitalize on their unique opportunities.

Children of all ages will enjoy 1000 Faces of Santa at the Children’s Village

Local author, Amanda Cabot generously part-nered with us for a fundraising book fair at Barnes & Noble. Amanda’s book signing for her newest release, In Firefly Valley, was held in conjunction with our book fair, which was on June 6th.

Thank you to Grant Farms for giving us $500 for garden supplies and plants. Above: Volunteers Sharyn Guthridge and Terry Tasseff plant the mums we bought with some of this generous donation.

The family of Edwin “Fritz” Friehauf donated his collection of 104 mechanical banks to the Paul Smith Children’s Village. (See a few in the photo on the left.) The Children’s Village plans to have them on display through November - and also incorporate them into Science lessons focusing on Simple Machines - wheel and axle, lever, inclined plane, pulleys etc.

Fun & Festivities at the Mad Hatter Fun-raisers!

The Paul Smith Children’s Village was transformed into a land of fun and whimsy for the 6th Annual Mad Hatter Fun-raiser over the weekend of Sept 11th and 13th.

On Friday evening, locals enjoyed the entertainment of the Jane Robinett Quartet at the Mad Hatter Mixer. This event was a chance for adults to enjoy the Children’s Village under the stars.

Sunday afternoon children and adults were entertained by Chad Wonder, a Denver magician who was voted Nickelodeon’s Entertainer of the Year. Dressed in their “Wonderland” finest, families then ventured into the Children’s Village to enjoy even more “Mad Hatter” activities.

This event would not be possible without the generous donations of our spon-sors and all the devoted fans of the Children’s Village who bought tickets to the events.
