French Immersion Program RegistrationStudents who enrol in the French Immersion Program at William Aberhart High School are expected to commit to the program for all three years of high school. The decision to continue in French Immersion should be based on student achievement, effort, commitment and willingness to continue in the program. Students enrolled in the French Immersion Program must show commitment to their French Immersion studies by speaking French at all times in all classes where French is the language of instruction.

Students enrolled in the French Immersion Program must complete the current school year in French Immersion before requesting a program transfer. Students who wish to withdraw from the program will be asked to engage in a diagnostic process so they can make an informed decision. If a student withdraws from the program, he/she may be directed to the regular program at their designated school for the following school year. (See the Detailed High School Course Guide)

Spanish Bilingual Program RegistrationStudents enrolled in the Spanish Bilingual Program must show commitment to their studies by speaking Spanish at all times in all classes where Spanish is the language of instruction. Registration for the Spanish Bilingual Program consists of 15 credits in Spanish Language Arts, 5 credits in Mathematics 10C Sp and one 5 credit option. The majority of students complete all requirements of the Spanish Bilingual Program High School Certificate within three years.

Students enrolled in Spanish Bilingual must complete the current school year before requesting a program transfer. Students who wish to withdraw from the program will be asked to engage in a diagnostic process so they can make an informed decision. A student who withdraws from the program may be directed to his/her regular program at their designated high school for the next school year.

Advanced Placement Program The Advanced Placement (AP) Program allows students to pursue university-level studies while in high school. It is intended for students who have demonstrated strength and interest in a particular subject.

The Pre-AP stream of courses will prepare students for the rigour of AP exam expectations which will be written in May of their final AP course.

AP course availability may vary from year to year. AP classes are optional and therefore not required for completion of the Alberta Education High School diploma. Students writing the AP exams are expected to pay AP exam fees. Schools are not funded to cover the cost of AP exams.

Second LanguagesFrench as a Second Language

Students in the Regular or Spanish Bilingual Program may wish to choose French as a Second Language as one of their complementary courses.

French 10 (5 credits)

The intent of this beginning French course is to develop the following skills, understandings and attitudes in students: as a desire and interest to learn French for personal benefit and as a life-long learning about people and culture; an awareness that the French language is used in other parts of the province, country and world as a medium for learning and communicating consequently respecting cultural linguistic diversity; an awareness of the skills and strategies required for intercultural communication; an awareness that through technology, students can access many different Francophone cultures; a growing ability to direct one’s own learning by reflecting on one’s progress and autonomously selecting appropriate learning strategy; an expansion of students’ knowledge and awareness of experiences and perceptions of other people beyond their immediate experience.

French 20-3Y (5 credits)

This course is a continuation of French 10 and is designed for students who have already developed the vocabulary and grammar basics of the beginner level. The goal of the course is the progressive development of effective oral and written comprehension and communication skills. Learning is achieved in a collaborative, supportive, positive environment where every student’s participation is fundamental to the process. A variety of resources will be used in the classroom including literature, textbooks, audio-visual materials and online technologies.

Spanish Language and CultureStudents in the Regular or French Immersion Program may wish to choose Spanish as one of their complementary courses.

Spanish 10 (5 credits)

Spanish 10 is a beginner’s course designed to equip students with a practical knowledge of Spanish using a theme-based approach. It allows students the opportunity to use basic language structures in simulations of everyday conversations. No previous Spanish is required.

Career and Technology Studies (CTS)Business, Administration, Finance and Information Technology Cluster (BIT)Computing Science 10 (6 credits)

This course will give students an introduction to programming using the Python language. Also, they will study computer architecture and basic logic circuits. We also have some fun in experimenting with graphics and developing a text-based game by the end of the course. Prior programming experience is NOT necessary for success. However, students should be comfortable with Mathematics

Trades, Manufacturing and Transportation Cluster (TMT)Mechanics (5 credits)

Learn about automotive technology and the related systems. Develop safe and appropriate shop procedures and practices while learning to inspect, diagnose, repair and service mechanical, electrical and electronic systems, and components or cars and light and commercial transport trucks.

Construction 10 (5 credits)

The Construction Program (“Woodworking”) teaches the safe and effective use of a variety of hand and power tools and is designed to provide a foundation of knowledge and skills related to the planning, design, and construction of various manufactured products. Students will also develop their basic competencies, such as problem solving, independence, responsibility, teamwork, and fundamental communication and numerical literacies. Projects are a mix of pre-planned and student choice.

Media, Design & Communication Arts Cluster (MDC)Design Studies - Computer Assisted Design (6 credits)

Design Studies is strongly recommended to students planning a career in drafting, engineering, architecture or interior design. Introductory Design Studies introduces the student to drafting and computer aided drafting (CAD). This course provides the student with an overview of drafting fields and the types of work performed by drafts people in industry. The student learns primarily through drafting projects and architecture construction consisting of single view, multi-view (orthographic projection), dimensioning, sectional views, and modeling perspective drawing assignments. The course is designed to be self-paced, self-directed with co-operative learning. Senior students can enter the Building Industry Land Development (BILD) student competition, a competition that showcases student design with focus on Architecture.

Communication Technology (6 credits)

The areas of focus for this course are Digital Photography and Digital Video and Animation. Using the school’s digital SLR and video cameras, students will explore lighting, color, texture, composition, and other subject matter to achieve a solid

grounding in both technical and creative photographic processes and apply those techniques to animation. In our multimedia lab, students will learn to utilize Adobe CC Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere) and Autodesk Inventor and 3DS Max in order to edit, enhance and exhibit their work.

Math 10-3 blended with Construction 10 (NEW FALL 2019) In this dual credit course, students will earn 3-5 Construction credits, while completing 5 credits in Math 10-3. Math 10-3 is designed for students who want to learn the mathematics needed to enter most trades or who want to enter the workforce after high school. The outcomes of Math 10-3 will be taught and demonstrated through practical hands-on projects as students learn the basics of woodworking. Students will learn computer assisted drafting, how to build a scale house model, and other small projects, such as a stool or a sawhorse. Students who enjoy woodworking will have completed the pre-requisites necessary to continue in the Construction program in grades 11 & 12.

Health, Recreation and Human Services Cluster (HRH) Sports Medicine 10 (5 credits)

The aim of Aberhart’s Sports Medicine program is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes, necessary to be successful in the pursuit of the many medical, first aid and sport career pathways related to Sports Medicine. Sports Medicine includes a knowledge base of human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, taping and strapping, therapeutic modalities, athletic training, the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries, sports nutrition, massage therapy, emergency first aid/CPR and much more. The major emphasis of these three levels is to apply the skills learned to real life situations.

Sports Performance 10 (5 credits)

The focus of Sports Performance is to engage students in modern training principles to enhance athletic development for competing in activities and sports that require high levels of fitness. Students will learn both the theory and application of each of these training principles as it applies to their personal development. Students will be actively participating in aerobic, anaerobic and strength training programs that include speed, agility, and power development components to improve athletic performance. In addition, students will study areas of nutrition, sports psychology, and ergogenic aids as they relate to their impact on sports performance. A basic understanding of human anatomy and kinesiology will be explored to provide a framework for how athletes physically respond to a highly developed training program. Students must be prepared to participate in a highly active and demanding training class.

Yoga 15/25 (6 credits)

Yoga 15/25 will introduce students, safely, to the basic postures (asanas), breathing techniques and relaxation methods of yoga. It will also introduce students to the historical roots of yoga and give them an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology as it applies to the discipline. Students will develop an enhanced

appreciation for, and acceptance of, their body. The program is designed to allow students to experience the benefits of increased flexibility, strength, focus and concentration. Students will learn to be non-judgmental about their own and others’ yoga practice. Through continued practice students will relieve stress, learn to relax at will, and experience the health benefits of a yoga practice.

Fine and Performing Arts ChoicesArt 10 - offered in English or Spanish (5 credits)

This foundation course consists of structured assignments that enable students to develop their creativity as well as technical skills. Art 10 focuses on three major components of visual learning:nDrawing and Design - discovering ways of recording ideas using a variety of media such as paint, charcoal, pastel, pencil, and clay. nComposition - finding ways to put visual information together to create meaning through painting, sculpting, drawing, clay, and photography. nEncounters - Studying the work of other artists - contemporary, historical and art across cultures, influencing understanding and choices. Students need to possess a genuine interest in art and a desire to develop creative skills.

Sculpting 15 - offered in English or Spanish (5 credits)

This course is designed for students who wish to engage in the creative process and are looking for an alternative to classical art instruction offered in Art 10, 20 and 30. Sculpting’s focus is the “making or building” of artful ideas. Sculpting 15 allows students to design and create numerous projects, each having their own focus and materials usage. Students will be required to create, and problem solve, using their own ideas, in 2-D and then translate them to 3-dimensional form. Students will be encouraged to experiment with materials such as clay, wire, paper, glue, string, thread, wood, paint, plastic and wax.

Drama 10 (5 credits)

Drama 10 is an introduction to drama and theatre. Students will attempt to develop fundamental performance and theatre skills through intensive, active involvement in the theatre disciplines of Orientation, Movement, Speech, Improvisation, Script work, Acting, and Technical Theatre. Through concentration, movement, voice and stage awareness, students will lay down the foundation for exploring Theatre as a creative expression of the human condition. This is an excellent course for all students as it helps develop interpersonal skills, self-awareness, self-esteem, confidence and public speaking skills. Full participation and a positive attitude are essential for success.

Film Studies 15 - offered in Spanish only (5 credits)

Interpret critically the social, historical and cultural factors in film. Develop and understanding of the filmmaking process and the film industry. Explore and assess the literary, dramatic and cinematic aspects of film. Create original films in order to express yourself for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Advanced Acting and Touring 15 (3 or 5 credits)

Advanced Acting offers students the opportunity to study theatre as a production based course. It provides a continuum of theatre experiences that move well beyond the introductory and exploratory foundation skills and activities outlined in Drama 10-20-30. The focus of the class is a full scale production of a scripted play. The class is offered one semester after school. All rehearsals and performances are outside of the regular timetable and students need to be able to commit to all workshops, rehearsals and performances for the duration of the production work. Students can sign up for the technical, design and management side of the course, or audition for a part in the play. Please see drama teacher of details.

Technical Theatre 15 (3 or 5 credits)

Offers you an opportunity to explore and experience the skills necessary to realize theatrical and public performance. Develop and demonstrate competencies in sound, lighting, set, costume, properties, make-up and stage management. Explore career opportunities by connecting with professional theatre communities. This class is offered one semester after school.

Dance 15 (5 credits)

Dance 15 is an introduction to dance in a high school setting. Senior high dance focuses on the development and growth of the whole student (physically, cognitively, creatively and socially.) Students are provided with a studio style class that gives them the opportunity to participate in various forms and aspects of dance in a non-competitive environment. No experience is necessary for this level of dance as all fundamentals and foundation will be introduced and reviewed. Areas of study may include Jazz (including but not limited to swing, funk, afro, lyrical street etc.), Hip Hop, Creative, Ballet, Contemporary, and ethno-culture. Dance technique, creativity, choreography, performance, anatomy, and history are all integral components of the program. All students in Dance 15 will have the opportunity to perform in the main stage production at the end of the semester.

Abe WellnessOrange Fitness 10/20/30 (NEW FALL 2019)

This new PE class is for all grade level students who would love to keep fitness as a part of their lives, but are having a difficult time fitting PE in your timetable. Get a positive start to your school day. Through this course, students will be able to challenge their AFLCA certification through CTS modules. Group fitness, weights, yoga, agility, team building, leadership, goal setting, basic nutrition, as well as functional fitness will be covered in this course. This is a course for everybody, come unwind and challenge yourself to be the best you can be.

Outdoor Education 10/20/30 (NEW FALL 2019)

Students are able to sign up for 1-5 activities presented. The course work for these activities will be in the morning or afternoon block, so would not interfere with your other classes. The Outdoor Education activities will run on a Friday/Saturday. This is a unique opportunity for students to try something new or enhance their skills in an activity they are currently involved with. For every activity they complete, a course credit will be applied to their transcript. This is another way our school is working to keep students active and healthy.

Music Program CoursesStrings 10

Five credit course for students who play or want to learn to play violin, viola, cello or string bass. The class is open to all students. The class is designed for students of all levels of ability and will be based on individualized instruction by both the classroom teacher and guest clinicians. Chamber ensembles will be a significant component of this class. The school is unable to provide instruments for loan or rent. These can be rented from local music stores by families as needed. String basses are provided for use at the school only.

Women’s Choir 15 (5 credits) Co-requisite: Choral Music 10

Students will learn a variety of choral literature and will have the opportunity to perform at a number of concerts and festivals throughout the year.

Concert Choir 15 (5 credits) Co-requisite: Choral Music 10

This choir consists of grade 11 and 12 women and grade 10, 11 and 12 men. All men who are new to the choral program at William Aberhart will automatically be registered for Concert Choir 15 when they select ‘choir’ on their option selection form. Students learn a variety of mixed choral literature and have the opportunity to perform at a number of concerts and festivals throughout the year.

Choral Music 10 (5 credits)Co-requisite: Women’s Choir 15; Men’s Concert Choir 15

Choral Music 10 is scheduled in the regular timetable and is mandatory for all non-band students new to the Choral program at William Aberhart. The Choral 10 program focuses on vocal technique, sight-reading, ear-training, history and theory. Students have the opportunity to sing music from a variety of genres, and a large range of musical ability and experience can be accommodated. This course is optional for band students.

Choral Ensemble 15 (5 credits each) Co-requisite: Choir 15 - audition is necessary

This performance ensemble is comprised of choir students who are selected through an audition process. This ensemble performs a variety of repertoire, including jazz and chamber music, at concerts and festivals as an extension of the Choral Music program. Students will automatically be registered for this class if they qualify.

Instrumental Music 10 (5 credits) Prerequisite: Completion of a Junior High School Band program or consent of the Music DirectorCo-requisite: Concert Band 15

The Instrumental Music 10 program provides an opportunity for students to develop as musicians through improvement of their skills developed in junior high. A large range of musical ability can be accommodated. The Music 10 program focuses on improving technical skills, sight-reading, theory and history and concert performances. More advanced students have the opportunity to play in various smaller ensembles: woodwind, brass, choirs, quartets.

Concert Band 15 (3 credits) Co-requisite: Instrumental Music 10 The concert band is an extension of the Instrumental Music 10 course and rehearses at different times outside of the normal timetable. Section rehearsals will be scheduled as needed throughout the year.

Instrumental Jazz 15 (3 or 5 credits) - will be registered through the music department in the fallCo-requisite: Instrumental Music 10Students must audition for placement purposes and register in one of three jazz ensembles, (big bands), according to ability and experience. Each ensemble rehearses either two or three times per week, depending on the ensemble. Students will study the fundamentals of big band jazz including swing, Latin and other genres. Improvisation is an integral component of this course.

Entrepreneurial ArtistThis is a CTS course in 5 modules designed for students who intend to pursue life as an artist. Offered in conjunction with Junior Achievement, students will explore and develop a business plan, as well as a marketing plan to assist in their success as an artist. Students will be connected with a Teacher Advisor at William Aberhart, as well as a professional artist/mentor through Junior Achievement.

This course will run outside of the regular timetable and is open to students in all Fine Arts programs, as well as to students who may pursue other forms/genres of art outside of school. Interested students may begin the course at any time and work at a pace that is relevant to their goals. Students must apply directly to the Learning Leader of Fine Arts, Mr. Nathan Gingrich, in order to establish that this course is appropriate.

Journalism 15, 25, 35 (NEW FALL 2019)

Prerequisite: none for 15-level preceding levels for 25 and 35 courses requiredThis option will give student an opportunity to understand and evaluate the impact, responsibility and ethics of media in society. Student will understand audience and purpose in relation to journalistic texts, create and publish media texts and apply technology effectively to enhance production of print and multimedia texts. This option will allow to collaborate and problem solve while creating media texts, apply the skills of analysis, self-evaluation and goal setting in the production and post-production process.
