CBD is a topic of intrigue—and possibly some confusion. Perhaps you have heard one of the uplifting stories about CBD in the news; maybe a friend or family member touts the benefits of CBD. However you were first introduced to this compound, you are sure to have more questions.

CBD shows promise as a health supplement be-cause it is non-intoxicating and has been studied for a number of potential therapeutic applications. Recogni-tion of CBD as a health supplement has grown as an in-creasing amount of personal testimonies and research is published. However, the benefits of CBD are clouded because of the relationship between CBD and marijuana. The cor-relation between CBD and marijuana is enough for some to close the browser or book and move on. We encourage you not to let these words dissuade you. CBD is a non-intoxicating compound that, when prop-erly derived from hemp, is legal in the United States.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 85 active compounds in the cannabis plant.

CBD is a compound found naturally in the cannabisplant. Cannabis is often used interchangeably with mar-ijuana, but marijuana is not the only plant to be classi-fied as cannabis. Scientifically, the word “cannabis” refers the genus that includes three species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Both hemp and marijuana fall under the rank of cannabis, though they are separate plants. This means CBD can be derived ei-ther hemp or marijuana. Our primary focus is on CBD derived from the hemp plant. Hemp contains high levels of CBD and low levels of the intoxicating THC compound. When CBD is derived from industrial hemp, consumers can enjoy the benefits of the compound without a high.

OUR MISSION Cannabidiol, or CBD, has become a leading compound in

the cannabis space. The uplifting testimonies and supportive research on CBD have sparked a new demand for hemp de-

rived CBD: a legal and non-intoxicating product.

Tasty Hemp Oil began as an operation out of our founder’s home. After experiencing the benefits of CBD, he made it his mission to improve the lives of at least five people a month with CBD. Since then, Tasty Hemp Oil has flourished into a manufacturing facility and e-commerce store, but our mission has remained the same. As an extension of our website, this e-book was created to share a passion for hemp and to help others with the benefit of CBD.

As CBD has become popularized over the past five years, the amount of information surrounding it has expanded tremendously. While the growth of the hemp industry is en-couraging, it can become difficult to know where to begin when first learning about CBD. At Tasty Hemp Oil, we place hemp education as a top priority. Our goal to provide you with quality information is in line with our core values: a passion for hemp, helping people, an excitement for change, and doing the right thing. With this e-book, we equip you with the information you need to begin on your CBD wellness journey.

IS CBD LEGAL?

As mentioned previously, CBD can be derived from both hemp and marijua-na. Discerning the two will give us a better understanding of what constitutes

legal CBD.

The Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana

The legal status of CBD can be difficult to navigate given the ever-

changing laws surrounding cannabis. Ultimately, the legality of CBD is

dependent upon source.

5

Page 6: CBD - Tasty Hemp Oiltaking CBD is not common, there have been instances where THC from CBD products has appeared on a drug test. Drug tests commonly test for THC. The 0.3% THC present

The most significant difference between hemp and mar-ijuana is the level of THC in the plant. THC, or tetrahydrocan-nabinol, is a compound found naturally in the cannabis plant.

Marijuana strains are bred to have high levels of THC; the exact level is dependent on the desired effect of the strain. In contrast, hemp is bred to have low levels of THC. The level of THC is what legally constitutes whether a cannabis derivative is considered hemp or marijuana. In order to be called hemp, the final product must contain less than 0.3% THC; anything above is considered marijuana.

Hemp vs. MarijuanaInitial confusion over the legality of CBD comes from the correlation of hemp and marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are

often used synonymously; however, the two vary in chemical composition, cultivation, and application.

0.3%

of THC This percentage is set by the 2014 Farm Bill. According to the bill, the term “industrial hemp” includes any derivative of the cannabis plant that is used for industrial purposes with a THC concentration of less than 0.3%. The Farm Bill recognizes industrial hemp as separate from marijuana and, in states where hemp cultivation is legal, allows institutions of higher education and departments of agriculture to conduct hemp research and pilot hemp programs. Under the Farm Bill, CBD derived from hemp with a THC concentration of less than 0.3% can be manufactured, sold, and purchased legally in the United States.

are bred for distinct purposes and are therefore grown in different environments.

01CHAPTER

Hemp and marijuana are bred for distinct purpos-es and are therefore grown in different environments. Hemp requires minimal care and is grown similarly to how the cannabis plant would grow naturally. The hemp plant is durable and can adjust to a variety of climates; in comparison, marijuana requires a controlled environ-ment with warmth and humidity. While the hemp plant grows thin and tall (up to 20ft) the marijuana plant is short and bushy.

The noticeable differences in cultivation have to do with the application for which the plants are grown for. Marijuana is used for medicinal and recreational purpos-es. Hemp, on the other hand, has more industrial uses. Derivatives of the hemp plant can be incorporated into thousands of products such as health food, construction material, paper, fuel, and plastic composites.

The trace amount of THC in CBD oil may raise concern if you are required to take a drug test. Many employers and organizations require preliminary, if not routine, drug testing. While failing a drug test from taking CBD is not common, there have been instances where THC from CBD products has appeared on a drug test.

Drug tests commonly test for THC. The 0.3% THC present in hemp products is a negligible amount that has little potential of showing up on a drug test.

However, the answer to “will I fail a drug test?” cannot be a resolute no. There have been instances, mainly in situations when CBD oil is taken in large quantities, that THC has shown up on a test.

A THC-free product would be fitting.

If you’re interested in CBD as a health supplement, you’re likely to wonder about how the compound affects our body.

The interaction between CBD and the en-docannabinoid system (ECS) explains how

CBD works as a wellness supplement.

As we learn more about the interaction of CBD and the ECS, we begin to understand how

CBD works with our system.

CBD is a cannabinoid, which is a chemical compound that interacts with our cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring in the cannabis plant, with CBD and THC being the two most common. At present, over 85 cannabinoids have been identified in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids derived from cannabis are called phytocannabinoids (phyto meaning plant in Greek).

CBD holds therapeutic properties because it is a phytocannabinoid. Phytocannabinoids imitate the ac-tion of cannabinoids we naturally create in our body, which are titled endocannabinoids. The function of endocannabinoids is to activate cannabinoid recep-tors in the brain and body. Phytocannabinoids also in-teract with our cannabinoid receptors; the effect the interaction has varies depending the cannabinoid.

CBD interacts with our cannabinoid receptors similarly to cannabinoids our bodies make. Naturally occurring cannabinoids such as anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglyc-erol (2AG) bind to our cannabinoid receptors to maintain proper functioning of the body.

The ECS is composed of

The system that supports this action is known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

To understand how cannabinoids such as CBD interact with the body, it is beneficial to learn the basic process of the endocannabinoid system.

The two major cannabinoid receptors, titled CB1 and CB2, sit on the surface of cells and observe conditions outside the cell.

How the Endocannabinoid System Works

CB1 receptors are located prominently in the brain.

CB1

CB2 receptors are found in abundance outside the nervous system, in places such as the immune system. CB2

02CHAPTER

If conditions outside the cell change, the cannabinoid receptors notify the cell which prompts the proper cellular response. Endocannabinoids are synthesized, or created, in our body on demand and bind to the cannabinoid receptors. The receptors then relay the endocannabinoid’s message to the cell, which tells the cell to act in a way that will bring outside conditions back to normal. Finally, metabolic enzymes break down the endocannabinoids. The ECS monitors a number of biological processes to support homeostasis.

Put simply, homeostasis is a state of balance. There are many biological functions that must remain within a specific threshold to work at optimal performance. Any deviation from this state could result in disease or dysfunction.

The ECS is responsible for regulating homeostasis for a number of functions, including pain, appetite, mood, and memory. Nearly every major system of the body contains components of the ECS.

CBDECS

Phytocannabinoids such as CBD act as supplementary canna-binoids and support the functions of the ECS. Rather than bind-ing directly to cannabinoid receptors, CBD acts as an antagonist and blocks other cannabinoids from binding to the receptors.

This unique interaction with the cannabi-noid receptors has captured the attention of researchers and CBD is being studied for a range of therapeutic effects.

Other Interactions

In addition to its indirect interaction with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBD can increase levels of anandamide by inhibit-ing the FAAH enzymes that break it down.

CBD also directly interacts with other non-cannabinoid receptors in the brain, in-cluding opioid receptors, dopamine receptors, and serotonin receptors. Having the ability to target these specific receptors shows promise in decreasing symptoms such as pain, addic-tion, depression, and anxiety.

Raising the levels of endocannabi-noids in the brain may show neuro-protective effects as well as other health benefits.

Often, we receive questions regarding the efficacy of CBD. There are limitations to what we can and cannot say about CBD, specifically as it pertains to the effects of CBD. The FDA considers CBD to be a food supplement and we are regulated to follow a strict standard of language because of such.

Since we are not doctors, we cannot prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure any disease.

What we can do is educate and direct to the research that has been conducted so

far. As of now, we know that CBD provides benefit for maintaining homeostasis

for several functions.

• Anti-seizure effects • Neuroprotective and anti-Inflammatory effects • Analgesic effects • Anti-tumor effects • Anti-psychotic effects • Anti-anxiety effects • Efficacy for treating substance use disorders • Endocrine and glycemic effects

We encourage you to do your own research to fully understand what CBD can do for you. Information online is plentiful.

Although research is ongoing, the side effects of CBD are reportedly minor. When comparing the research conducted on CBD, there are similarities between the recorded side effects. In 2011, a review published in Current Drug Safe-ty compiled 132 in vivo and in vitro reports of CBD ad-ministration and highlighted the reported side effects. The review found that continuous use and high doses of CBD are well tolerated by humans. Overall, the review determined that the controlled intake of CBD is safe for humans and animals, but further studies are needed. In 2017, a review in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Re-

The review concluded that important parameters need to be studied are more clinical trials are needed. The studies conducted on the side effects of CBD have small sample sizes and more research is needed. As of now, the anecdotal side effects of CBD are in line with what research suggests. In higher servings, CBD has been reported to cause drowsiness and digestive upset.

GET YOU HIGH

CBD does not contain the intoxicating properties of THC and does not get you high. To understand why, we must look at the chemical properties of CBD.

Will CBD get you high? This is an important question for those interested in the benefits of CBD but concerned by the intoxicating

side effects of cannabis.

THE MISCONCEPTIONthat CBD gets you highis largely due to the relation between CBD AND THC.

03CHAPTER

CBD and THC are two of the most abundant and noteworthy cannabinoids. These two com-pounds are similar on a molecular level but react differently with our cannabinoid receptors. The difference in interaction is significant enough that THC is considered a controlled substance while CBD is legal in the United States.

The most significant difference between these compounds is that THC creates a high and

CBD does not. In fact, CBD has been found to negate the intoxicating effects of THC.

NOT ONLY IS CBD NON-INTOXICATING, IT’S KNOWN TO WORK AGAINST THE THC THAT CREATES A HIGH.

CBD THC Activation of the CB1 receptor, which is found pri-marily in the brain and the central nervous system, can create intoxicating effects. THC is an agonist of the CB1 receptor, meaning that it activates the receptor. THC closely resembles anandamide, which is known as “the bliss molecule” and stimulates the CB1 re-ceptors. This creates the euphoria THC is known for.

CBD has a low potential for binding to the CB1 re-ceptor. Instead, CBD acts as an antagonist, inhibiting other chemicals from binding to the receptors. CBD sup-presses the CB1 activating qualities of THC, which lessens the intoxicating effect of the THC compound.

THC and CBD are the most well-known phytocannabi-noids, but there are over 85 phytocannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Some interact with our cannabinoid receptors while others interact through different receptors in the body. Here are a few of note:

PHYTOCANNABINOIDS

A non-intoxicating compound that is the precursor to THC and CBD. CBG inhibits the uptake of GABA, which can decrease anxi-

THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT CBD and THC are secreted from cannabis in a sticky resin. These phytocannabinoids are two of hundreds of compounds that are a part of the whole plant extract. Additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and nutrients, each with therapeutic ef-fects, are secreted from the plant as well. These phytonutrients work together in what is known as the entourage effect.

Understanding of how this effect impacts human health is still in the beginning stages, but it opens an interesting conversation surrounding the benefit of consuming a whole plant hemp extract.

According to this concept, cannabis com-

pounds—such as cannabinoids and ter-

penes—work together to produce an effect

greater than the compounds alone.

CBD can be extracted from the hemp plant in a variety of forms. Two main forms of CBD extract are CBD isolate and whole plant hemp extract. A CBD product will contain one of these two extracts in their formula (sometimes both). It is im-portant to note which extract is used, as the type of extract in a product has been shown to impact the interaction of CBD in the body.

HEMP EXTRACT vs CBD ISOLATE

Whole plant hemp extract is an oil that contains all materials extracted from the hemp plant, including ter-penes, cannabinoids, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and phytonutrients. Whole plant hemp extract contains trace levels of THC and, as discussed previously, provides the synergistic benefits of the whole hemp plant known as the entourage effect. Choosing a product with CBD isolate or whole plant hemp extract will be de pendent upon your preference of nutrients and cannabinoids. Some seek the sole benefits of CBD while others appreciate the properties of the whole plant. With research and trial, you will discover which CBD extract is the right fit.

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. This finewhite powder is around 99% CBD and containsno additional cannabinoids, terpenes, or plantcomponents from the hemp plant. CBDisolate has zero levels of THC and ispreferable to those who seek a THC-freeproduct. Many of the higher milligram CBD products contain isolate, as isolate takes up less space and is therefore preferable when manufacturing a higher potency CBD product. Keep in mind, isolate does not contain any of the extra plant matter or phytocannabinoids as isolate-based products are not full-spectrum.

Whole Plant

Choosing a product with CBD isolate or whole plant hemp extract will be dependent upon your preference of nu-trients and cannabinoids. Some seek the sole benefits of CBD while others appreciate the properties of the whole plant. With research and trial, you will discover which CBD extract is the right fit. 04

FINDING A REPUTABLE SELLER

SOURCING

Hemp oil should be sourced from ex-perienced farmers that have a high standard for growing hemp. Hemp is a bioaccumulator and should be grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Both domestic and European farm-ers have years of experience growing hemp and are considered the highest quality producers of hemp. Be wary of hemp oil from China; it has a lower price point but questionable quality.

EXTRACTIONMETHOD

Hemp oil can be extracted several ways. The highest standard of ex-traction is the CO2 method, which uses high pressure and low tem-peratures to eliminate the need for harsh chemicals. While com-plex, this method is clean, safe, and ensures a pure CBD product.

TESTING

Hemp oil products should be rou-tinely tested, and retailers should have a current certificate of analy-sis (COA) readily available. Proper testing will confirm the potency of a product and check for impurities. COAs should be up-to-date (no older than six months) and retailers should comply with any request for a COA.

Retailers should be transparent about the above practices. Purchasing from a reputable source will en-sure that the ingredients on the label reflect what is in the product, including CBD and THC levels. Taking a quality product will guarantee you are receiving the proper benefits of CBD and will decrease the possibility

of side effects.

BEFORE PURCHASE:First and foremost, you want to identify that a CBD retailer is reputable. There are a few

telling characteristics of a quality CBD seller, which we’ve outlined for you here.

BEFORE Hemp has distinct flavor; most would suggest it tastes earthy. For many, the taste of hemp is something to get used to. Some never adjust while others grow accustomed to the natural flavor. Fortunately, CBD is available in various products that are manufactured to mask the taste of hemp.

Before Taking CBDQuestions You May Have

04CHAPTER

When beginning a CBD routine, we want to make sure to take enough to be effective, but not consume to excess. Every body processes CBD differently, so we cannot recommend an exact serving size. Determining the amount of CBD to take will be, at first, a trial process. However, you can follow a few guidelines to discover the right amount of CBD for you. We recommend starting with the serving size that is determined by the manufacturer. This is a good baseline to begin with. It takes about two weeks for CBD to build up in your system, so we suggest taking the suggested serving size for two weeks. If the effects are not where you would like them to be after this amount of time, increase or decrease the amount of CBD you are taking. Repeat this process until the desired results are achieved. As a reminder, there are no ad-

verse side effects of taking too much CBD, so an increase in serving size should not cause concern.

What does it taste like?

How much should I take?

The length of time it takes to feel the effects of CBD depends on the product. In the next chapter, we will go into further detail on the time it takes for each type of CBD product to work.

How long does it take to work?

CBD CBD is extracted from the plant in the form of raw plant material and is then refined into an oil or isolate. CBD can be taken as is or can be infused into a variety of products. Determining what kind of CBD product to choose will be dependent upon several factors, including route of delivery and delivery speed. 05

CHAPTER

Types of

As discussed before, the method of intake influences the speed of delivery. The route of delivery determines how quickly CBD enters your system and the percentage of the CBD content that is absorbed. For your guidance, we’ve mapped out the four most common routes of delivery and the delivery speed of each.

When inhaled, the consumed can-nabinoids surpass the digestive sys-tem and liver and enter the blood-stream rapidly.

When applied topically, cannabinoids manage localized concerns and do not enter the bloodstream.

When consumed sublingually, or un-der the tongue, the consumed can-nabinoids enter the bloodstream rel-atively fast.

When consumed orally, it takes over an hour for the consumed cannabi-noids to enter the bloodstream.
