2 July 2018 Week 10, Term 2, 2018

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: Dear Parents and Friends of Cawdor PS

The holidays are almost here and everyone is looking forward to a good rest after

another busy term. Term 2 has been an excellent ten weeks of student learning and

achievements and I am very proud of the effort that the boys and girls have made

throughout the term.

The Footsteps disco was a big hit with the children last week.

In the words of one of our students…”It’s the best night of the

year!” Thank you to Mrs Kidd, Mrs Napoleone and Mrs Forbes

who came to help with the disco. We realty appreciate them

giving up their evening with their families. Thanks also to the

parents who helped out on the night.

It was great to have the rain on Thursday—hopefully all of our

families on tank water have had at least some of their tanks

filled. As the rain stopped just before the disco the skies put on

an amazing light show. This beautiful rainbow filled the sky

over the church!

Keep the date for our 160th birthday celebrations free….Thursday 9 August in Education

Week. Lots of special activities are being planned for the day (singing, bushdancing,

craft, damper making, history tours, olden days sports etc) which will start at 9.00am.

Parents and other family members are invited to join us for the morning or whole day if

you like and we ask that students come dressed in period outfits. We will also be looking

for some parents to assist on the day, especially with the preparation of the damper. A

detailed note about the day will be sent home in Week 1 next term.

Semester one student reports were sent home last Friday and the interviews will mainly

be held tomorrow afternoon/night. The teachers are looking forward to meeting with

you to discuss the children’s progress. If you have not yet made an interview time,

please speak to Mrs Hillier in the morning. I also encourage you to write a comment on

your child’s report—the teachers and children really value your feedback on the

children’s progress.

Finally, don’t forget pyjama day this Thursday to raise money for Lymphoma Australia.

Movies will also be shown on the day so remember to return the note if you give your

child permission to watch a PG film.

Thank you to the staff, parents and students for all your hard work and dedication to the

learning programs at Cawdor. I wish everyone a relaxing and safe holiday.

Kind Regards,

Ms Sharon Ihlein

For our Education Week 160th birthday celebrations we

are asking all children to come to school dressed in

1850s period costume . Please speak to your class

teacher if you are unable to find clothing for your child.

Snippets of Cawdor’s History

During World War II the teacher-

in-charge was Mr Cecil Neville. He

organised the digging of an air

raid shelter in the paddock just beyond the current brick toilet

block. It was a U shape and just

big enough for the small enrolment of students to

assemble.

According to Frank Lipscombe, a former pupil, the shelter was 2m

deep and 1m wide but was never

used. Mr Lipscombe also said that

the children came to school by horse and put the horses in the

paddock near the church.
