20 May, 2013 Week 4, Term 2, 2013
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: Dear Parents and Friends of Cawdor PS
The start of the term has been a busy one, especially in sport and with
the NAPLAN tests last week. In the holidays we were informed that our
school would be involved in the National Partnership program again this
year. We are very happy to be receiving $22000 over the next year to
fund Professional Learning for the teachers. The focus of the program
will be improving the outcomes of students who are struggling in reading
and comprehension.
This week we welcome back Mr Willcocks after his travels in England.
I’m sure he will have lots of wonderful stories to tell his class. I would
like to thank Ms Barlow for her outstanding work with the Wallabies
during Mr Willcocks’ absence. Ms Barlow will now resume her teaching
role with the Koalas.
This Thursday Ms Barlow and I will be taking eight Stage 3 students to
the Sydney Writers’ Festival at Penrith. At the festival they will have
the opportunity to hear well-known Australian authors speak about
books and writing. This initiative is part of our enrichment program in
literacy and the students and teachers are all looking forward to the day.
The students were selected on the basis of their interest or talent in
reading or writing.
Thank you to the staff and parents for your condolences and support
following the death of my brother-in-law. The flowers from the P&C were
beautiful and were much appreciated. A special thank you to Mr Grenfell
for relieving as principal during my absence.
Kind Regards
Ms Sharon Ihlein
Principal

Rotary Awards At the end of Term 2 Mrs Hillier and Mrs Smilanic were presented with
Pride of Workmanship awards from Camden Rotary. They received their
awards for their dedication to their work at Cawdor. Mrs Smilanic has
been a support officer at the school for over ten years and has assisted
many students with disabilities so that they can be happily integrated
into the regular classes. Mrs Hillier manages the office efficiently and
professionally and is a wonderful support to the students, staff and
parents. Both Mrs Hillier and Mrs Smilanic go above and beyond their
roles at the school and are both integral and highly valued members of
the Cawdor team.
Congratulations to both!

Sports News
Twenty students represented Cawdor at the
Razorback Cross Country Carnival in Week 2.
They all did their best on the day and their
behaviour and sportsmanship were excellent.
Many thanks to Ms Barlow who was our official on
the day, to Mrs Shepherd from Mt Hunter who was
our team manager and to the parents who assisted
with the transport.
Congratulations go to Laila Rofe and Joanne Nash
who both came first in their events—outstanding
achievements! Both girls will now compete at the
South western Sydney cross country carnival and
we wish them both good luck in their events.
The students in Years 2 to 6 competed at the first
soccer gala day last Friday and all showed good
sportsmanship and improvement in their skills
throughout the day. Thank you to Ms Barlow and
Mr Bimson for being the team managers on the day
and to the parents who came along to support the
students.
GRIP Leadership Conference
Last Friday four of the student leaders, Joanne Nash, school captain, Jake
Fennemore, school vice captain, Jack Borkman, School Councillor and Lily
McCormack, Enviro Power leader, attended a GRIP Leadership conference at the
University of Wollongong. At the conference the students were involved
in a range of activities to develop their
leadership skills. Their involvement and behaviour on the day were exemplary and
they have come back to school with lots of ideas for the Student Councill.

N otice Board
Students should now be well underway with the Premier’s Reading Challenge. It’s not too late to
enter so please speak to Mrs Le Good or Mrs Hillier for more information and a registration form.
As the weather is now becoming cooler it is appropriate for the children to be wearing their
winter uniform. All students are asked to wear their winter school uniform for the school photos
next week. Parents are reminded that the uniform shop stocks inexpensive beanies and scarves in
the Cawdor school colours.
Student Banking is going well, with three of our regular bankers receiving their Bronze awards.
This term the Commonwealth Bank is running a competition for students to go into a draw to win
$5000—simply by depositing three times during the term.
Thank you to everyone who is collecting the Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers. The collection
box is in the school foyer. Sticker cards are available from Mrs. Hillier in the school office.
Boys’ Education
One of the focus areas of our school plan is student engagement and we would like to especially develop some more programs that focus on boys’ education. One of the initiatives is to invite male members of our community (fathers, grandfathers, uncles, friends of the family or other workers in the community) to come to the school and talk to the boys about the jobs that they do. No experience in public speaking is necessary - we would like the boys to have the opportunity to talk to different male role models and to find out about different jobs, study that is required for various occupations, the
demands of work etc.
If parents are interested, please complete the attached note and return it to the school note box. It will be a requirement for anyone who joins the program to complete the ‘Working With Children’
documentation.
