Dates for your Diary
From the Head’s head …….
Well, it’s been a busy half-term so far and it looks set to continue with the advent of advent and all that comes with it…. Although there is a lot planned for Chr*****s (can’t say it yet) we are trying to limit the impact of over excited children to the
final week of term – please check the dates in the diary at the back of CavTell.
We are working harder than ever this year to improve your child’s mathematics and reading and writing. We are about to launch MyMaths which is an online teaching and homework package. Mr Hopkins and Mrs Adams have organised some parents drop-ins to help with this – those dates can be found in the diary. What I really like, as a parent, is how easy to use the system is – it even does the checking and marking for you, so you can really
give your child the support that they need.
Our Cakes for Coaches has so far raised £321, of which every penny goes back to your children to help subsidise the coach cost of our exciting Educational Visits programme. Please can I remind you that we do have a payment system in operation which many of you are already taking advantage of – a little bit each week soon adds up and really helps to spread the payments. I am really looking forward to hearing from the Year 2, 3 and 4 children when they get back from their visits to London in a few weeks
time – they are so excited !!
A little reminder about uniform and coats… Now it’s getting chilly please ensure that your child comes to school in a warm, waterproof coat – we do send them out to play in light rain, as it’s so important for them to get fresh air and exercise. Please also be reminded that trainers (with contrasting markings) are NOT allowed in school. FULLY black trainers are acceptable –
if unsure, please check with your child’s teacher.
I look forward to seeing you at a number of our events this term, especially at our upcoming Mathmagician Morning on 30th (if this is postponed due to potential strike action
I will organise another date in December)
A big thank you to all the parents who came to this years Harvest Festival, and enjoyed soup and bread on the allotment. We had a beautiful warm and sunny Autumn day for the occasion.
Many children brought donations of food which have been given to Norwich Foodbank. Cavell School donated 104kgs of food, which will be enough to feed more than 20 local people in need for three days.
Norwich Foodbank provides three days of emergency food to individuals or families who have unexpected difficulties in life, such as bereavement, redundancy, illness or benefits delay. People are issued a voucher for a food box by care professionals.
The nearest distribution centre is New Hope Christian Centre on Martineau Lane.

Allotment News
We have been having trouble with crows on the allotment and in the polytunnel, so we need to make scarecrows to keep them away from our crops.
Donations of clean, old clothes, such as hats, gloves, jumpers and trousers, in as bright colours as possible, would be useful, to allow us to start making these.
Please could children bring a spare pair of shoes to school if they wish to play on the field at lunch time. The field can be muddy, and if they can change back into a clean pair after lunch, this will help to keep the school and classrooms clean.
If parents have any old, long-sleeved men’s shirts which could be used during art classes, could they bring them to the school office. Thank you.
School Library
Mrs Kennard is opening the library every Tuesday from 3.20—3.40pm. Parents and Children have the opportunity after school to change or borrow library books.
We would love to see more of you using this opportunity!
Cavell Friends PTA Group
We have recently relaunched the Cavell Friends Group, and had several new parents come to the meeting with lots of new ideas. We are holding our next meeting on Monday 21st November at 9am and would love to see more parents getting involved.
We have held our first draw at the end of October, and congratulations go to Heather Bird who won £20.
We have 44 members, but are always looking for more.
More Members=Higher Prize Money!
If you are interested in joining, please leave your name at the school office and Julie Foster will be in touch.

Cakes for Coaches
We have been selling raffle tickets every Friday to win a cake which can be seen outside the main reception. We think you would agree that our school chef makes the most fabulous cakes!
Tickets are ONLY 50p
ALL the money raised each week goes into the Coach Fund, to be evenly split amongst all classes to help fund this years exciting school trips.
Some of our lucky winners with their superb cakes!!!
Christmas Tree Decoration Competition
A lovely big Christmas tree will be arriving in the hall in December.
We need plenty of decorations for the tree, and will be having a competition for the children to create a decoration at home. There will be a small prize for the winners.
Look out for further details on our posters, and the children will hear more in assembly.
On Thursday 17th November, 19 children took part in a 5-a-side football tournament at Goals, on the Hewett School site.
We had one boys team and one girls team, and congratulations go to all who took part as Cavell were named as winners!!!
Congratulations Team!!
We have had a great start in the Nursery, and the children have settled happily into our routines. We have had lots of visitors, a librarian who read stories, a nurse who talked about hospital visits, and a baby who had a bath! Thank you for all your visits too, we shared a Harvest Festival on a beautiful sunny day, reading times, and of course parent’s evening.
This term we continue our theme of family and friends and will focus on celebrations like Divali, fireworks and of
course Christmas. Lots of singing, stories and Christmas activities with our party at the end of term. Outdoor learning and play is an important part of our day; so wrap up warm, we will visit the wonderful wildlife area and continue to explore the allotment. A visitor is coming to talk about road safety as it becomes darker and we will explore dark and light with torches.
As part of SEAL (social, emotional aspects of learning) we will be exploring friendships, relationships and learning how to be kind to each other.

This term we are learning all about toys! We will be describing a variety of toys and thinking about what they are made of and how we play with them. We will be comparing old and new toys and finding out about “moving” toys. We will be making our own “pop-up” toy or puppet.
We are very excited about our forthcoming visit from the Lego Workshop team. They will be joining us on the
22nd November along with hundreds of pieces of lego! We will be learning how to build houses together and then we will make a huge lego village which parents will be able to come in to see.
All the children have continued to benefit from their outdoor learning sessions and time working on the allotment. They have learnt new skills and gained a
knowledge and respect for nature and the natural world.

All Dressed Up (Clothes)… This half term we are learning all about clothes. Clothes are an important part of our lives. They can keep us warm (or cool). We can wear different colours and designs and change them for different occasions, we can follow the latest fashions – and even make them ourselves! In Geography, the children will be finding out what people wear in different countries and how the weather affects what people wear and, in Science, they will be investigating which materials keep us warm or dry. As part of our technology work we will be looking at how wool is made and the children will try their hand at weaving. We will also be comparing clothes of today with clothes worn in the past. As part of our topic work, the children will be visiting The Victoria and Albert Museum in London on Thursday December 8th. In literacy, we continue to work hard reinforcing the basics. The weekly spellings are made up of the High Frequency Words which every child should know by the end of Year 2. Supporting your child in learning and practising these spellings will hopefully translate into improved reading and writing ability. Similarly, encouraging your child to learn their times tables will help their maths work considerably. Look out for the new online maths homework, which will be available soon…

In Science we are investigating the properties of different materials in relation to buildings and their uses. In Maths our targets focus on time including telling the time on a digital and analogue clock in both 12 and 24 hour formats.
Our P.E. sessions will still take place on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. English homework is set on Wednesdays and due in by Monday.
Maths homework is set on Fridays and due in by Wednesday – although in two weeks time we will begin to use www.mymaths.co.uk and tasks may be set more regularly.

Settlements
This half term Year 5/6 are looking at settlements and what makes a good one! We will be focusing our attention towards Anglo-Saxon settlements and paying particular attention to the life of an Anglo-Saxon person. Our school trip to West Stow in November, really helped us in exploring exactly what life was like in Anglo-Saxon times.
In our Literacy lessons we will be looking at writing non-chronological reports and use our growing knowledge of Anglo-Saxons to write
about their lifestyles. Our Science this half term is focusing on different materials and what their properties are.
