Sporting Success

William Goodstone, a student from 8JDe, is the latest Cavendish School talent who has had the opportunity to showcase his skills at a national level, having been se-lected to represent Sussex in the English Table Tennis As-sociation County Championships 2012/13. William earned his place on the team by qualifying at the County Trials last year, and made his Sussex debut in De-cember.

For the past 3 years, William has attended weekly junior training at Hampden Park Sports Centre under the guid-ance of club coach Will Holt and plays for Cavendish A in the Eastbourne Table Tennis League. William also rep-resented Eastbourne last season in the National Cadet League, where he helped the team to finish runners up in their first campaign.

William’s skill and success as a player is clear, as he has recently been invited to train with the Regional Develop-ment Squad and competes in the National Junior League; he is coached twice a week by England no.13 Craig Bryant.

Art At Cavendish

This year Cavendish Art Department are asking all pu-pils in year 7– 9 to be part of the Annual School Art ex-hibition 2013 at the Towner Art Gallery. If your child is interested in Art and is able to work every Thursday evening after school on this Art project, please contact the Art Department. The theme this year is Portraits; exploring the idea of becoming someone else, of stepping into some-body’s shoes, or in fact stepping into an existing piece of art work and becoming the person in the portrait. It’s about what's inside the frame, putting one’s self into the picture- literally. Each school will be given a frame measuring 2.5 metres by 2 metres, and may use any media they wish includ-ing paint, charcoal, collage, montage, fabric, card-board relief, mosaic ,digital or ceramics. Once the work is completed, students will again visit The Towner to display their work.

Parents’ Forum

The next Parents' Forum Meeting will take place on Monday 11th February at 6pm, with a focus on Maths.

The all new innovative scheme of work for year 7 takes the pupils through all of the critical concepts that are fundamental to being competent at Mathematics and delivers them through open, project based tasks. The forum will give you the opportunity to explore these tasks and provide the opportunity to ask questions about the Year 7 Mathematics curriculum.

We hope you are able to attend. To reserve a space, please e-mail [email protected]

Cavendish School Mock Interview Day

On the 30th January 2013, business people from the local community came in to Cavendish School to give our year 11 students the opportunity to experience a mock interview in preparation for their real College or appren-ticeship interview.

Business people from; Stephen Rimmer Solicitors, Hays Education, Lloyds Bank, Sainsbury’s, Mark Bishop Ltd, Sup-ply Desk, Cobb PR, Identity, Army, The People Matter Trust, ASDA, Sussex Downs College and the Beachy Head Rotary club spent thirty minutes with each student, inter-viewing them about their post-16 choices and then giv-ing essential feedback on what students did well and how they could improve for the real thing. The success of the day and the positive feedback from all students en-sured this will become an annual feature for our Year 11 students.

STOP PRESS....STOP PRESS.....STOP PRESS.......STOP PRESS............ As we go to print, we have received news that Lewis Headland has been selected as part of Harlequin Rugby Club U15s into the match day squad against Middlesex on 21st February. He has also been selected to represent the Sussex A team against Middlesex on Sunday 10th February. Well done Lewis!

University Visit

On the 6th February 2013, Cavendish School took thirty year 11 students over to Sussex University to experience a day in a Higher Education establishment. Students got to meet current University students and post graduate students where they found out about University life (both the academic and social sides), students were given a full tour of the University – looking at academic facilities, catering facilities and the dorms. To finish the day off (after lunch in the university canteen) students were given a group task where they had to design their own university. The day was aspirational to all students who attended and with such positive feedback it will defi-nitely be repeated again in the future.

David Laws MP

Cavendish School is proud to have received a letter from Rt Hon David Laws MP, the Minister of State for Schools. Cavendish have not been shy in promoting the exceptional results that were achieved by our students in 2012, and this recent letter from Mr. Laws only further demonstrates how successful 2012 was for the Caven-dish Community. The letter (pictured left) offers con-gratulations on the results achieved by Cavendish stu-dents, which has seen our school become one of the top 100 best improving schools from Key Stage 2 to GCSE. This means that students’ results during their Year 6 assessments have been compared with their GCSE results and show that the high levels of work and com-

mitment from students, staff and parents have seen an outstanding improvement. This is made even more impressive when you consider the number of students who join Cavendish already achieving at a high level.

This accolade underlines what a fantastic year 2012 was for GCSE results at Cavendish School. With Year 11 hard at work during this busy exam period, we look forward to continuing this success in 2013.
