Causes of the Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution in America
Growth of Industry- The flow of imported goods was cut off during the War of 1812, so Americans started buying American products from American manufacturers - Mid 1700s the way goods were made changed
Growth of Industry Continued
- Began in Britain when inventors created machines to perform some of the work involved in cloth (textile) making, such as spinning- Machines ran on waterpower so mills were built along rivers (easy for shipping and trade too)
Industrial Revolution- the change from an agrarian society to one based on industry (factories)- New England’s soil was poor & farming was difficult people were willing to leave their farms- New England had rivers & streams, close to other resources such as coal & iron from Pennsylvania, and it had many ports (good geographical location) Industrial Revolution video from

Samuel Slater- duplicated machines in Britain – using the machines the mill made cotton thread
Factory System- a system bringing manufacturing steps together in one place to increase efficiency (important part of IR)
Lowell Factory
-Francis Cabot Lowell (1st factory systems)- all the stages of cloth were performed under one roof
Factors that led to industrialization
• Plentiful natural resources in the North (many rivers to operate the mills with water power)
• Improved transportation:– Roads, canals, railroads, steamboats
• Growing immigrant population created a large workforce
