conjuring the three graces

slaBs, coils & pinching

Instructor: Lisa NaplesExploring these hand-building techniques, we will make beautiful functional pottery. Just as important we will discuss the creative process and how ideas originate and flow. Having been steeped in a major transition in my own studio, I am especially interested in helping guide the student who has been away from clay for any length of time or artists who find themselves bored with what they are making and want to take the next step. We will work with earthenware clay creating textures and “dry brushing” colored slips. Work will be bisque fired as possible. All Levels welcome – ages 15+Lisa Naples conjures pots and narrative figures. She received her MFA from NSCAD in 1988. Her work has been shown at James A. Michener Art Museum, Smithsonian and Phil-adelphia Museum of Art Craft Shows. She has lectured and given workshops around the country. A 2005 NCECA residency at the Australian National University totally changed her studio life.July 29 to August 2, 2011 Friday to Tuesday 10:00 am - 4:00 pmCER-09 • Course Fee: $450 + $40 Materials Fee

pouring and drinking pots: a tour

This workshop focuses on the exploration of form as it relates to specific functions and body as it relates to added parts: feet, handles, spouts, lids, and knobs. Mark’s decorating technique of carving through wax-resist will also be demonstrated. The goal will be to make pots that do the job and are expressive. Students may work in Cone 6 or Cone 10 clay. Pieces will be bisque fired as possible for travel home.Mark Shapiro maintains a studio and wood kiln in western Massachusetts. He is a frequent workshop leader, lecturer, panelist and writer. finding form and surface:high/low fire: achieving atmospheric effects on your work

Instructor: Michael ConnellyIn this six-day hands-on workshop, participants will explore the potential approach to form and surface of both soda/salt fired stoneware and earthen-ware pottery. Students should bring approximately 15 pieces of bisqued pots made from Cone 10 clay for firing the salt/soda kiln. Please bring a mix of small, medium and a few larger pots, not too many bowls. Then as the kiln is firing, in the next days, there will be demonstrations on achieving atmospheric results using layers of englobes, terra sigillatas and glazes on earthenware. These will be fired in the electric kiln as weather and time permits. There will be demonstrations on the building of finials, handles and lids as well as many opportunities for participants to develop their own work. This is a unique chance to study two different temperature ranges. All levels welcome – ages 15+

Michael Connelly is a studio potter in Philadelphia as well as Head of Ceramics at Montgomery Community College in Blue Bell, PA. He received his MFA from Alfred University. He has lectured and taught at various venues nationally and interna-tionally. ART EX

PLO

RERSDear Friends,

Are you looking for a fantastic experience for your children during the summer of 2011? Then the Art Explorers Program at Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts is the place for you…. We offer exceptional programs for children and youth.

If you are new to Art Explorers we welcome you with open arms. We invite you to experience what a summer camp really should be…about the children, their learning and growth. We also welcome all those returning. We are so thrilled to have you back and look forward to our ongoing relationship. We love nothing more than running around with kids on campus and helping them connect with nature and gain love and appreciation for this beautiful earth we live on! We know the importance of children having direct contact with art, athletics, and nature in a safe nurturing environment. This year we will meet with each camper at the beginning of the week and choose a strand that they would like to submerse themselves in. We believe that this will create a deeply enjoyable

educational experience - a few of the choices are drawing and painting, the natural environment, drama and acting classes. We strive to make this summer camp experi-ence the best your child has ever had. We have an amazing crew of wonderful, skilled staff just waiting for our summer venture together.

Finally, we also want campers and their parents to know that our number one priority is to have a safe camp and we make a strong commitment to supervise our programs better than any other camp in the country. Patricia Imperiali-Tiano is a certified athletic trainer and will be present each day to care for our campers. I (Ritamary Montano-Vining) am a certified art educator and will work with our campers along with our acting director Macy Kleinfelder. We also have certified elementary teacher Kristy Kleinfelder-Hommel working daily with our campers.

Please note that a limited amount of space is available and we have “filled up” several of our past camp offerings. Call Fran today at (518) 263-2073. So don’t delay, register today! We look forward to hearing from you with any and all questions. We hope that you will choose to join us for what promises to be our best camp ever this summer!

Sincerely,

Ritamary Montano-Vining Director

PHILOSOPHY Sugar Maples Art Explorers strives to maintain an atmosphere where students who want to learn may do so in an environment which encourages creativity and recognizes the im-portance of the individual. Students are accepted at whatever their proficiency level may be and are encouraged to grow. Faculty and staff strive to motivate campers and share with them the joy of achievement in fine arts. Enthusiasm is contagious at Sugar Maples as our campers discover, learn, experience and succeed.

SUGAR MAPLES DAYS Campers begin their day at approximately 10:00 am by getting dropped off at the Sugar Maples office for camper pick-up by faculty and staff. After lunch, students participate in individual practice or rest time. Afternoon classes and rehearsals end at 4:00 pm.

YOUR COUNSELOR Sugar Maples counseling staff is comprised of educators. The counseling staff supervises campers throughout the day, including all meals, recreation and activities. They assist with class preparation and plan group activities for students. All of our staff members strive to make each camper’s experience fun, safe, worthwhile and memorable.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Sugar Maples Scholarship Program offers students an opportunity to apply for financial assistance toward their camp tuition. Aid is available for campers whose family income would otherwise prevent participation at Sugar Maples.

GLOBAL ARTS EXPLORATION PROGRAMS Global Arts Exploration Studio encompasses a variety of art activities that may include painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture and will provide students with exposure to a diversity of materials and techniques. Although the emphasis is on a cultural approach to the arts, the basics of art structure and arrangement such as line, shape value, texture, pattern, space and color will be stressed. This approach to arts education is designed to give young artists a more comprehensive experience in the arts, and an increased multi-cultural awareness. It also establishes the creative arts as an important tool for learning. By studying approaches and techniques from around the world, students can explore issues of who we are, the world in which we live, and our ability to interpret creatively those things important to us.

DRAMA: LET THE PLAY BEGIN Each summer, Sugar Maples concludes the season with a magnificent performance. Campers take part in the performances by participating in activities such as mask making, set design, costuming, choreography, script writing and prop making. These events are the culmination of joyous work by many campers, in the name of theater. We understand theater is not for all so if a camper chooses not to participate they can fill the time working on other projects.
