IT'S ALL IN GOOD FUN.. Your CATS organization was founded on FUN.Both on and off the court, and the year 2013 is proving to be one of the most fun ever. For example, back in early February when the Blackhawks were still negotiating when to get back on the ice, Social Committee member, Jim Vahey, decided to get CATS together for an outing at an exciting Chicago Wolves contest on Feb. 17th.And exciting it was but the Wolves were outpucked by San Antonio still to the delight of our group of hockey-loving CATS. Your CATS Social Committee is hard at work planning a year-long series of events. Headed by our very devoted Chairperson, Robin Winter Odem and her crew of volunteering event leaders, you'll have no reason to stay home and watch repeats of the Walking Dead. IT'S ALL IN GOOD FUN..

Your CATS organization was founded on FUN. Both on and off the court, and the year2013 is proving to be one of the most fun ever.

For example, back in early February when the Blackhawks were still negotiating whento get back on the ice, Social Committee member,Jim Vahey, decided to get CATS together for an outing at an exciting Chicago Wolvescontest on Feb. 17th. And exciting it was but the Wolves were outpucked by SanAntonio still to the delight of our group of hockey-loving CATS.

Your CATS Social Committee is hard at work planning ayear-long series of events. Headed by our very devotedChairperson, Robin Winter Odem and her crew of volunteering event leaders, you'll have no reason to stayhome and watch repeats of the Walking Dead.

Another example, the results are in with our famousRiver Trails Tennis Party on March 23rd headed by CarolynPopp and new committee member, Phil Chan. This hasbeen one of our most popular annual events. Phil Connorhas put a Bulls game together against theOrlando Magic on April 5th and some seats are still available. LOOKIN’ NIFTY IN THE FIFTIES.Talk about fun. This was one of better events last Fall as many CATS put on the garb and

danced the night away to tunes like Blueberry Hill .The 50's music rocked the halls of Colletti's ballroom as CATS boogeyed their way around

the floor in their poodle skirts, saddle oxfords, rolled up jeans, even saw packs of butts bulging out of tee-shirt sleeves. All surrounded by posters and flyers of Elvis, Marilyn, and James Dean who were brought back to share a decade of marvelous memories for many really cool CATS.Thanks to Christine and her slaves, Olga, John, and Robin.

LAPPIN’ IT UP WITH SANTA.As usual, CATS celebrates the Holiday season with our annual Xmas tennis party at the Mid-Town

Tennis Club. After some exhilarating tennis and consumption of Holiday treats, many members tookto the laps of our male rent-a-Santa, namely Carlos Yanez, who seemed to enjoy his role way too much. As did our male members on the lap of female Santa for the night , the inviting SusanMcKenna. I can't disclose what some asked for in the way of Xmas gifts. Speaking of gifts, your clubexceeded its charitable ways that night by contributing 78 pounds of food to the delight of The

Common Pantry who deliver the supplies monthly to needy senior families at Xmas. A worthy causeand an amazing donation by your CATS. Our hats off to event leader Carole Hitchie (see below)and her staff of elves who coordinated the event and the charitable drive.

RIVER TRAILS: THE WAY CHAN CAN.Newly-appointed to the social committee, Phil Chan had volunteered to lead the

River Trails tennis party. He made it a success. There were some great tennis matches on Saturday, March 23rd and according to Phil, some exciting, sweaty, heart-throbbing very competitive matches. It's the CATS version of March Madness. River Trails has become an annual event for CATS, always well-attended,always competitive, and always fun. Once off the courts, attendees were treated to their fill of Chinese food from the Canton House, ample drinks, an assortment of snacks. Some even enjoyed watching very exciting college basketball that night. Thanks Phil, nice job on your first Social Committee assignment, a winning assignment.

GET TO KNOW YOUR CATS. LIKE DANIEL BOROCHOFF.

We have some amazingly talented members in our organization. Not only on the tennis court but through personal achievements that are well worth noting. You should know Daniel Borochoff, the watch dog of CATS.Dan is the founder of Charity Watch, a company that does just that.Any one who donates to charity wants to know if their money is actually helping the cause. Dan sees that it does. For the past 20 years, his organization has been dedicated to rooting out charities with poor financial performance and accountability. So you and I can give to charities that actually live up to their stated mission. Dan started his charity ratings business after receiving an accounting degree, an MBA, even after spending a few

years as a Wall Street analyst. His watch dog group which includes a staff of five working out of aconverted high-rise apartment in Chicago after having moved 10 years ago from Washington, D.C.Their days are consumed by keeping the non-profit world on its toes by grading over 600 charitiesthrough newsletters and watch-dog style articles.

Charity Watch has achieved national recognition and plaudits from numerous sources in the governmental and media world. Mr. Borochoff has been on 60 Minutes, CNN, and has given hundreds of interviews over the years. And he was recently featured in a Wall Street Journal article on abuse in charities regarding our veterans. Dan sums ups his passion quite succinctly.“Just imagine, $300 billion a year given to charities. If we can influence even a small percentageof that, to give thoughtfully, to give better, think of the good, the lives that could be saved, the suffering relieved, the environment cleaner, the animals protected. When you get down to it, that'swhat is driving me!" Also driving Dan is his passion for tennis. You'll see him playing on a B team thisseason. Say hello to Dan, and thank him as well.

ON A SAD NOTE: MICHAEL JOYCE [FEB. 4, 1947 -MARCH 15, 2013] We have lost one of our most popular members. Michael Joyce passed away

quietly at his home in Sandburg Terrace on March 15th. Cause of death has notbeen disclosed. Michael was a social member of CATS and often attended a number of our events. He was warm, engaging, well-liked and had many friendswithin the club. He was also a long-standing member of the Lake Shore Ski Club.Services were held at the Donellann Funeral Home on March 23rd, the same dateMichael was planning to attend our River Trails tennis party. He will be sorely missed by many. Michael was 66 years old.

CATS HALL OF FAME: [JONI TUKE] It was sometime in 1971 when my Secretary at Leo Burnett announced that Joni Tuke was hereto see me. Her name was familiar since I'd seen at least a dozen telephone messages from her

asking for an appointment. I usually didn't see sales representatives leavingthat up to my capable art directors and production people. I must havebeen in between trying to solve client advertising problems, so I said, "Sendher in!" Well, in walks this very pretty young lady toting a portfolio almost aslarge as herself , sporting an ear-to-ear grin, while cheerfully blurting out"How the hell are ya?" I liked her instantly. Not just because of the very talented artists and photographers she represented but for that bundle ofenergy she brought with her. She was bright, engaging, armed with a greatsense of humor which made her very good at her job. While conversing, thesubject of tennis came up. I was about to head up CATS, we were growingour young organization, and she seemed a perfect fit, plus, she even hadher own racket. So I signed her up. Joni is retired now after 27 years of successfully beating down doors in a very competitive advertising agencyarena. Joni has an amazing background. She is the Mom of four great kids

raising them on her own in between appointments. In her previous life, she was a clothes designer, an accomplished Ice Dancer on skates I assume, a popular model in Chicagoappearing in a number of TV commercials while being registered with all the major modelingagencies. All before starting Joni Tuke, Inc. and growing that company to represent 17 photographers, illustrators, and film production facilities. Joni has brought that same endless bundle of energy to CATS. She was Secretary on the first board we established in 1972, she hasbeen a consistent team player, a team Captain, and to this day a valuable member of yourCATS Social Committee. She has also been a gracious host over the years often offering herEvanston abode for CATS after tennis parties. Joni's contributions to CATS have been enormous. She always brings life to any gathering on or off the court and the CATS Board is very proud towelcome her into the coveted CATS Hall Of Fame. Congratulations, Joni, there's no one more

deserving. As I said, I liked her instantly. Still do. (John Wagner)
